ARCHIVE ONE: PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF ~
Gary, welcome to the group. That is quite an intro! Glad you decided to join and hope you find the discussions stimulating.
Hi Everyone,I'm very happy to have found this group. I enjoy reading history & historical fiction, among other genres. Just finished Richard Holmes' The Age of Wonder: How the Romantic Generation Discovered the Beauty and Terror of Science and am about to begin a biography of Peter the Great (once I finish The Lady of the Rivers by Philippa Gregory...) Looking forward to talking books & history with all of you.
-Karin
Welcome Karin, we are glad to have you as a member. As you get started please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link after all of the text of your post at the bottom of the post . Placement at the bottom of the post calls the reader's attention to the book and/or author and increases the readability of your post. This is how the books you mentioned should look:

Welcome Gary to the History Club. We have many several other Marines in the club who would say Semper Fi!
I read about Goodreads in the NY Times a day ago and was glad I stumbled into this group. I'm in advertising but have always been a lifelong fan of history from the 19th century onwards as well as international politics and intrigue and all that fun stuff...look forward to interesting discussions and recommendations

Hi, everyone, my name is Tom and I look forward to the discussions on the great history books out there. I had been primarily reading European history books for years, but the last ten years I've shifted to more American history topics, particularly the Indian Wars and the American Civil War. I have a tendency to bounce around to whatever topic catches my fancy, so I look forward to being intrigued and influenced by the discussions here!
Welcome Raghu to the History Club. The Goodreads promotional post/ad that I just noticed in the NY Times was quite something. We should offer much conversation of books to interest you.

Tom, welcome to the History Club. I’m currently reading a biography of George Washington in part because I know little of the French and Indian War, which was part of the European Seven Years War. After reading some military books I have to jump around and read something on the lighter side to clear my head.
My name is Jim and I live in New York, hard against the Connecticut border. I read primarily non-fiction, American history, though I just started reading Ferguson's The Vikings. This is my first time here so I'm eager to learn.

Hi everybody,I have been a bit of a history geek since high school when I read Barbara Tuchman’s, “The Guns of August.” I remember driving to school one day in my old VW bug thinking non-fiction stories were inherently more interesting than fiction because they actually happened. I do occasionally now read fiction, but I still find myself reading history and thinking, wow, you just can’t make stuff up that’s better than this. I lived overseas – Japan and Germany – for a number of years so I guess inevitably am drawn to World War II. The Manchester books on Churchill and the Kershaw books on Hitler are some of my favorites. I’m looking forward to reading your recommendations and reviews and finding more like them.

Welcome Jim, Jill and Scott to the History Club. Scott, I agree history is so fascinating as you stated "...wow, you just can’t make stuff up that’s better than this".
Glad you joined us Karin, Tom,Jim,Scott and Raghu. This is the place for all things history and we hope you will jump right in and participate in the discussions/book recommendations. Questions?....ask any of the moderators.
Welcome Jill from the other Jill!!! Glad you could join us and know you will find much here to satisfy your love of history.
Welcome everyone! I am new here myself, but have already come to enjoy the fellowship and recommendations of the group. Scott, I can relate- Tuchman was one of my first experiences in reading a larger work of history outside of a textbook that has led me on my path.
Great to have everyone here sharing such large and diverse backgrounds and experiences in a common interest. There is strength in that.

Glad you joined us John. This is history lovers central!!!...and we hope you will join in the discussions/book recommendations. But most of all, just enjoy!
Hello everyone. I became a history freak after high school, once I found out that history is, in fact, interesting... and it's been a non-stop journey ever since then.I am mostly interested in historical fiction, some of my favorite novels have been Rabble in Arms by Kenneth Roberts, Spirit Lake by MacKinlay Kantor, and of course, Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell. I am looking for a good excuse to re-read Spirit Lake.
Sitting in front of me are two non-fiction books I hope to read soon -- A History of the Wife by Marilyn Yalom and America's Women: 400 Years of Dolls, Drudges, Helpmates, and Heroines by Gail Collins. As I looked through the extensive list of categories offered here, I couldn't find one for Women in History? American women, especially stories of early American women, are my favorite of all historical genres.

Hello everyone! I am relatively new to GoodReads, and very excited to have joined my first group! I am a recent college grad who majored in history. I focused mostly on the late middle ages and the early modern period, particularly the history of science. Since I graduated, I have spent most of my time reading novels, but realized I miss reading and discussing non-fiction. I decided to look into reading groups on here, and voila, here I am! I live and work in Philadelphia, and in my free time I enjoy running, reading (duh), and learning something new. My current project is learning the piano... we'll see how that goes!

Hi All! This is my first time on this site. I studied history at undergraduate level and after completing my Masters and PhD in international Relations I am now a research fellow at the University of York. I have never lost my passion in history and believe it is absolutely essential for better understanding the present. My personal areas of interest are the history of war, international politics and diplomacy. I think my favourite history book remains one I read many years ago for my undergrad degree: A People's Tragedy by Orlando Figes. An utterly absorbing read shifting from personal stories to high level politics.
Welcome Thomas.....you will find that your passion for history is shared by members of this international club.
