oops pressed the wrong button. as I was saying, I'm currently recovering from a leg operation but did work for a charity. Books are important to me to a somewhat irrational degree....I'm adding them to goodreads a few at a time but have my own records and am approaching the 1000 mark. My main interests are history and politics, but I make sure I get through some fiction every year. And I have a bizarre dog subcategory.

I also enjoy music, film and decent tv. Oh and hats. Of course.

My name is Brannon Sirmon. I am 26 years old living and working in Birmingham, Alabama. I attended the University of Alabama majoring in business but after reading my great-grandfather's authentic WWI diary it changed my life along with my career path. It sparked an interest to help disabled veterans. It also made me realize my passion for reading and writing. I have always enjoyed learning new things, especially history, but it really blossomed because of my 10th grade history teacher. I believe educators are the most important and influential people in a person's life.

Hi everyone, I am just a little TOO excited to have found this group. I've always been an avid history reader and am new to being an active participant on goodreads.

I'm about 6 months into a +/- 3 year read through the US Presidents. I started thinking I'd read their memoirs, but that expanded to a top biography for each President, whatever memoirs I could find from their cabinet members and now a visit to as many of the Presidential Libraries as I can get to. (Nixon and Reagan so far, but my wife and I will hit LBJ, GHWB, GWB, Clinton and Carter when we take the long way from our current home in Newport Beach, CA to our new home in Lexington, KY.

I've read the memoirs of GWB's Decision Points, Nixon's RN: The Memoirs of Richard Nixon and Carter's Keeping Faith: Memoirs of a President so far. I'm currently on LBJ's The Vantage Point: Perspectives Of The Presidency 1963 1969. I'm going through the "Social Change & Soviet Relations" era. I've organized my reading lists by eras based off the Miller Center at UVA's groupings (it's been helpful so far): http://millercenter.org/scripps/archi...

I'm also reading Schlesinger's American Presidents series as a companion, because memoirs/bios tend to be 600+ pages and it's a nice break to read a 150 page life story from time to time. Of those, I've read LBJ, Nixon and I'm currently on Carter. I'm pretty unimpressed with the series so far, unfortunately.

Hello everyone!

I guess I am quite the newcomer around the group.

My name is Dave, I am from Montreal, Canada.
I am 26 years old, francophone altough bilingual (please excuse the gallicism here and there and plain translation mistakes from time to time.

I have been working for three years in provincial politics in Québec, going through various ministerial cabinets.

My studies are in political sciences, both at the B.A level, completed at Laval University in Québec City and the M.A level, completed at Ottawa University, in Ontario.

I have a keen interest into history, ranging from Antiquity to modern history. I tend to read by phases, stemming from Roman history to Prussian History, etc.

My main interest fields in history is political history. I particularly like the following country/eras : Medieval, France, Great Britain, Austria-Hungary, Russia, Prussia, Germany, Canada, US.

I look forward to participate in this group, hoping I get the way everything functions fast.

Currently, I am trying to read all of Shlesinger's American Presidents serie, before reading the top biographies of each of the Presidents.

I guess this is it for now! A pleasure to be part of the group, looking forward to your knowledge and wisdom and providing bits of mine!

Hello, everyone! I'm Aishwarya from India. I'm a law student, and though that doesn't usually leave me a lot of time to read, I love reading any book which is even moderately historical.
I picked up reading books on history after I read Gibbon's Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. I read the bit about Zenobia and felt like writing more about it. Another one of my favorites is Team of Rivals by Doris Kearns Goodwin.
Currently, I am very interested in reading about the history of Ancient Empires other than the Greek and the Roman. I just finished reading Simon Montefiore's excellent Jerusalem - The Biography, and that kinda sparked my interest.

Howdy. I'm not new to computers, but I am new to using computers as way to join a community. It's going to take me a while before I know my way around sites and groups such as this. Apologies in advance for the inevitable mistakes. I have a passion for History that began when I was an 18-year-old combat Marine in Vietnam, trying to figure out why we were there. Special interests include the history of Montana, as well as the history of East and Southeast Asia. My mother's side of the family were Montana Metis, my father's side were German engineers and artisans who escaped from Moscow, Russia. My grandfather was a Marine at Belleau Wood; my father was one of the first Marine Raiders. Becoming a Marine was a foregone conclusion in my family. Since then I've been shot, stabbed, run over by my own motorcycle, crash landed more than once in a helicopter, been captured briefly by the Khmer Rouge, seriously chastised by a group of irate motorcycle chicks--the list goes on. Why I am still here is proof positive that the Universe has a bent sense of humor. I mention a little of it not only to introduce myself, but in order to also say that I look at History through the prism of human potential first, all other prisms second. History is made up of people, and when we read about these people they automatically become characters. Where I draw the line is when historical characters cease being people.
