Hi, Eric, so glad you joined us. If you're feeling ambitious, you might want to ask Bentley to set you up with a thread where you can tell us all about the books you've read, in the 50 Books in 2012 section here -
http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/7...
It's not a competition, and I like being able to keep track of what I've read during the year. You can find recommendations for really good books there.

Hello Eric,

Welcome to the History Book Club. A big thank you to Becky who did a great job welcoming you and she included some terrific links which will help you get off to a great start.

Also thank you to all of the assisting moderators for their great welcomes. Vicki has given you a great idea if you feel ambitious.

All best,

Karen (karen-ann) Hi All,
I live in the UK and like all of those here (I guess) I love history reading both fiction and non-fiction. Looking forward to joining in on the discussion of Byzantium which I loaded onto my kindle last night after joining the group.

I am a registered nurse in a Minor Injury Unit of a small community hospital not far from the world heritage city Bath.

Recently finished reading 'A Place of greater Safety' by Hilary Mantel a fictionalised account of the French revolution focusing on 3 characters from the time Danton, Demoulins and Robespierre.

Currently reading 'She Wolves: the women who ruled England before Elizabeth' Helen Castor.

Looking forward to being part of this group .

Bea | 1830 comments Hi, Karen!

Welcome to your truly international book club. How lovely to live near Bath, one of my favorite English cities.

For this club as you get started please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link after all of the text of your post at the bottom of the post itself.

Placement at the bottom of the post calls the reader's attention to the book itself and/or author and increases the readability of your posts. This is how the books you mentioned should look:

Byzantium The Surprising Life Of A Medieval Empire by Judith Herrin by Judith Herrin Judith Herrin

A Place of Greater Safety A Novel by Hilary Mantel by Hilary Mantel Hilary Mantel

She-Wolves The Women Who Ruled England Before Elizabeth by Helen Castor by Helen Castor (no photo)

Karen (karen-ann) Thank you all for your warm welcome and advise.

I have a query as I have just started Byzantium and I note that the discussion on the book is on a weekly schedule is it appropriate for me to comment on posts from earlier weeks in the discussion as I progress through the book or wait until I have caught up on reading the section of the book you are all discussing at present.

Stephanie | 1 comments I'm Stephanie. I'm almost 30. I teach middle school Language Arts and History. I love history, especially modern U.S. history is my area of expertise.

I got my degree in Elementary education 8 years ago, because I was told it would be impossible to get a job teaching high school history. I have the best of both world's now teaching language arts and history to middle school students.

I primarily read books on United States history, because I am so interested in it. I do read about world history when I get the chance, especially when it comes to learning what I am teaching. I love to travel and see all that I read about, but that is not always possible.

My hobbies are reading nonfiction, genealogy, cooking, traveling, and helping others. I love to share with others what I have learned. My philosophy is it is important to study history so we can learn from our mistakes.

Glad to find this group to get new ideas of what to read.

Charles Nadeau Hi, I'm Charles. The non-fiction books on my shelves mostly run to history books with a smattering of cosmology books, which for me are a kind of deep-time history books. I'm currently reading Juliet Barker's Agincourt.

Welcome to the group, I'm new here like you but have found everyone to be welcoming and friendly. 'Agincourt' sounds the type of book I would enjoy reading.

Rachel Aschmann (byways) | 3 comments Hi all! I retired last May and moved to the pacific northwest to be near my son and his family. I've been reading crazily due to having so much more time but now I want to settle down and discuss books with others. I've always loved history and am looking forward to new books. Sometimes it's hard to decide which book to read as there are so many so it will be good to have suggestions.

I have "Battle Cry of Freedom" on my bookshelf, among many that I bought and never read. I also have "The Federalist Papers" on my phone so with those two I'll get started. I realize I'm behind with the reading but that's ok. The comments of others will help understand more about what I'm reading. The Federalist Papers by James Madison Battle Cry of Freedom The Civil War Era by James M. McPherson
