Bryan Craig Welcome, Ashley. We are excited to have you join us.

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when are ready to cite a book. (There is a link on the top right of the reply box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

More information:

Take a few moments to read the orientation:

And our guidelines:

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask us moderators. I look forward to your postings.

Alisa (mstaz) Ashley, glad you found this group and decided to join. We all have a way of feeding each other's to-read lists through discussions found on this board. Please look around the threads and join in. We look forward to your contributions.

Jill H. (bucs1960) Welcome Ashely.....you have come to the right place for the history love.....and your TBR list will grow out of control!!!! Enjoy.

message 4104: by Brandon (new)

Brandon Well, I just joined. My name is Brandon, and I saw that everyone was welcoming another Brando who is my age, and I thought, "Man! These guys must be accurate!" Then I realized it wasn't me and, well, it was pretty funny.

I like autobiographies and biographies, though I have ever finished one. I was hoping that by getting into a group like this I would be able to have more accountability in finishing one.

I enjoy Latino history, particularly that of Mexico. Some of my favorite historical figures are Ernesto Che Guevara and Fidel Castro.

I also like learning about presidents, as they are excellent role models for me ( I think that kids should be reading books about them and then maybe our future wouldn't be so bleak)and I want to start reading the books Theodore Rex and The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt pretty soon.

And Greek mythology and military are some favorites also. :)

So, hello everyone!

Okay, let's try it:

Theodore Rex
The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt

Okay, I think I got it!

message 4107: by Bryan (last edited Feb 02, 2012 01:45PM) (new)

Bryan Craig Great try, Brandon. All you need is the bookcover, the author picture, and author link. Look at the bottom of the search results for the radio button called "cover" and "photo." Here is what one book would look like:

Theodore Rex by Edmund Morris Edmund Morris Edmund Morris

message 4108: by Alisa (new)

Alisa (mstaz) Brandon your introduction made me smile. Great to have you in the group! The links and instruction Bryan provided will get you off to a good start but if you need a hand you can ask any of the moderators. (see his note in msg 4200 re getting the bookcover and author links.) You can always practice posting on our 'mechanics of the board' thread. Once you get it down it's a snap!

Jill H. (bucs1960) Welcome "other" Brandon........glad you found this history lovers group.
Keep trying with the citations....you'll get it and then it becomes automatic.

Brandon Theodore Rex by Edmund Morris Theodore Rex

Okay, let's try now!

I got it! Sorry about that all, I was touching up my skills. :)

Edmund Morris Edmund Morris

message 4111: by Alisa (new)

Alisa (mstaz) Almost . . . add the author and you've got it. You can do that by going back in after adding bookcover and click on the author tab at the top, radio buttons at the bottom. We love your diligence! :-)

Do I have it now? And thank you!

Hi Ashley and Brandon, welcome to the group.
Apart from all the fine discussions on history we also have quite a few nice threads on music - all kinds from all places.
Come and take a look/listen if you like.
Best,
André

message 4115: by Brandon (new)

Brandon Thanks Andre!

I'll be sure to check out the music stuff. Being a musician, it's cool to experience new types to add to my own style.

@Bryan: For some reason, my add book/author is not working right now (oh no! I wore it out!) but I think now I have the gist of it. So it's book cover-author photo-author link?

Aparajita | 29 comments Hi Bentley,Thanks for welcoming me,
I am Aparajita, I am 28 years old, and I live in Bangalore , India. I work as a translator- from German to English. I have loved history since I was, let's see...11 years old. Began reading the historical novels of Jean Plaidy when I was 13 and it's been a love affair ever since. I go through phases when I develop fascinations with specific periods/regions/ dynasties, however I have read a lot about europe, and Indian history, because that is what we get taught in school. China and the middle east and central asia are sadly not touched upon much, but I really got into Central Asian history after reading William Dalrymple's In Xanadu and some bios of Genghis Khan and Kublai Khan. I would love to read more books on the middle/near east and ancient egypt too- these are topics which kind of mesmerise me but which I haven't read that much about. Next to these would be the ancient world and medieval europe.
Oh, and family wise, I inherit my love of history from my mom..she introduced me to Jean Plaidy.. we read and discuss stuff together, often.
I don't know if I can get hold of all the books recommended here, but I hope to find a goodly number:)

Jerry | 2 comments Hello, my name is Jerry, and I've just joined goodreads very recently and then discovered the History Book Club. I enjoy history, biographies, historical fiction, and others.

I'm looking forward to the group discussions of the recommended books. I signed up for the discussion of "A Tale of Two Cities", which I've been meaning to read for quite some time but something else always came up... I noticed that I was a little late in signing up for it. I hope that's OK.

At any rate, thanks for welcoming me and I look forward to the experience.

Scottie | 2 comments Hi All,

I'm new to GR and this is my first group (I think). I'm not sure if this is the right place, but I'm hoping to have some in-depth discussions regarding the JFK assassination.

There's a new book out called Against Them, and looks like some cages are about to get rattled.

"Scottie"

Against Them How & Why Alexander Haig, Bob Woodward, Donald Rumsfeld, & Richard Cheney Covered Up the JFK Assassination in the Wake of the Watergate Break-In by Tegan Mathis

Cleo (cleopatra18) | 40 comments I introduced myself a couple of weeks ago and the moderators were so warm with their welcomes, that I was wondering if I could get some more help .....??? I'm trying to get prepared for A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens Charles Dickens Charles Dickens read and I need some assistance with quoting a previous poster. If I hit "reply" it gives me the FIRST few lines from the post, but what do I do if I want to quote something longer or something from within a longer post? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Cleo wrote: "...what if I would want to quote something from within a longer post..."

Hi Cleo, if there's a line within the other's comment you'd like to reply to you will have to add it manually.
Delete the part from the automatic "reply" you don't want/need and fill in what it is you are replying to.

Or just use the same html you see in the automatic reply and fill in what you want.
Hope this helps.
Best,
André

Welcome, Kelly. The history of California is tied into the whole USA. My grandfather came from West Virginia looking for gold in 1890. He found it, but the State covered his stake with a dam. When I was transferred to Ranch Cucamonga in 1975 for 6 months, I met lots of people from the midwest.

message 4145: by Nele (new)

Nele Hello everyone
My name is Nele and i am new here. I started getting into studying history after i did some travelling in China and realized how little I knew about the world around me. So i started reading and soon it lead me to some great history books.
At the moment i am working part time as a secretary and i am a part time history student at Antwerp university.
I have been mostly interested in world history and Asian history (but who knows where my search for knowledge will lead me next?)
So you can add one more pin to your group map: Antwerp, Belgium
And since we are still at the start of 2012: can you make me a thread in the 50 books to read in 2012 challenge? I am pretty sure i will not be able to make it to 50, since i am such a slow reader, but i am ready to try anyway ;-)

Nice to meet all of you

Nele

Sure Nele and welcome from Antwerp, Belgium.

We are a global community so you will find a lot of members from Europe and around the world.

I would like to help you get started on the right foot and just want you to become acclimated to how we do citations.

Here are some examples: (we add the book cover, the author's photo if available, and always the author's link)

Guadalcanal Diary (Modern Library War) by Richard Tregaskis by Richard Tregaskis (no photo of author available on goodreads)

and

Day of Infamy Sixtieth-Anniversary Edition by Walter Lord by Walter Lord Walter Lord

For mentioning simply the author's names; citations would look like the following:

John Keegan John Keegan

William Raymond Manchester William Raymond Manchester

Eric Hammel Eric Hammel

To learn how to do the citations properly for our site, one thread in our Help Desk folder is very helpful:

Mechanics of the Board:

http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/2...

Here is the Orientation:

http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1...

Here are the Guidelines:

http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/5...

We more than likely will be starting an American Civil War selection fairly soon so you might want to join in on that selection.

We are glad to have you with us.

Bentley

Note: These are some additional sample citations of different types::

A Journey to the Northern Ocean The Adventures of Samuel Hearne by Samuel Hearne by Samuel Hearne (no author's photo available)

Boswell's London Journal, 1762 1763 by James Boswell by James Boswell James Boswell
