ARCHIVE ONE: PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF ~

I like autobiographies and biographies, though I have ever finished one. I was hoping that by getting into a group like this I would be able to have more accountability in finishing one.
I enjoy Latino history, particularly that of Mexico. Some of my favorite historical figures are Ernesto Che Guevara and Fidel Castro.
I also like learning about presidents, as they are excellent role models for me ( I think that kids should be reading books about them and then maybe our future wouldn't be so bleak)and I want to start reading the books Theodore Rex and The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt pretty soon.
And Greek mythology and military are some favorites also. :)
So, hello everyone!

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the reply box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. This is how the authors you've mentioned should look:

Okay, let's try it:
Theodore Rex
The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt
Okay, I think I got it!

Keep trying with the citations....you'll get it and then it becomes automatic.

Okay, let's try now!
I got it! Sorry about that all, I was touching up my skills. :)

Hi Ashley and Brandon, welcome to the group.
Apart from all the fine discussions on history we also have quite a few nice threads on music - all kinds from all places.
Come and take a look/listen if you like.
Best,
André

I'll be sure to check out the music stuff. Being a musician, it's cool to experience new types to add to my own style.
@Bryan: For some reason, my add book/author is not working right now (oh no! I wore it out!) but I think now I have the gist of it. So it's book cover-author photo-author link?

I am Aparajita, I am 28 years old, and I live in Bangalore , India. I work as a translator- from German to English. I have loved history since I was, let's see...11 years old. Began reading the historical novels of Jean Plaidy when I was 13 and it's been a love affair ever since. I go through phases when I develop fascinations with specific periods/regions/ dynasties, however I have read a lot about europe, and Indian history, because that is what we get taught in school. China and the middle east and central asia are sadly not touched upon much, but I really got into Central Asian history after reading William Dalrymple's In Xanadu and some bios of Genghis Khan and Kublai Khan. I would love to read more books on the middle/near east and ancient egypt too- these are topics which kind of mesmerise me but which I haven't read that much about. Next to these would be the ancient world and medieval europe.
Oh, and family wise, I inherit my love of history from my mom..she introduced me to Jean Plaidy.. we read and discuss stuff together, often.
I don't know if I can get hold of all the books recommended here, but I hope to find a goodly number:)

That is correct Brandon. Keep up the good work.

I'm looking forward to the group discussions of the recommended books. I signed up for the discussion of "A Tale of Two Cities", which I've been meaning to read for quite some time but something else always came up... I noticed that I was a little late in signing up for it. I hope that's OK.
At any rate, thanks for welcoming me and I look forward to the experience.

I'm new to GR and this is my first group (I think). I'm not sure if this is the right place, but I'm hoping to have some in-depth discussions regarding the JFK assassination.
There's a new book out called Against Them, and looks like some cages are about to get rattled.

Hi Cleo, if there's a line within the other's comment you'd like to reply to you will have to add it manually.
Delete the part from the automatic "reply" you don't want/need and fill in what it is you are replying to.
Or just use the same html you see in the automatic reply and fill in what you want.
Hope this helps.
Best,
André

My name is Kelly and I live in Sacramento, California. I was a history major in college and especially enjoyed learning about medieval and English history. As I now work in a completely unr..."
Welcome, Kelly. The history of California is tied into the whole USA. My grandfather came from West Virginia looking for gold in 1890. He found it, but the State covered his stake with a dam. When I was transferred to Ranch Cucamonga in 1975 for 6 months, I met lots of people from the midwest.
Welcome Cleo, Scottie, Kelly, Ashley, Brandon, Aparajita, LynnM, Jerry...goodness while I was away - so many new members.
Thank you to the Assisting Moderators who welcomed the new members and provided some our guidelines and helpful links.

Welcome Aparajita all the way from India. We look forward to hearing your perspectives,

My name is Nele and i am new here. I started getting into studying history after i did some travelling in China and realized how little I knew about the world around me. So i started reading and soon it lead me to some great history books.
At the moment i am working part time as a secretary and i am a part time history student at Antwerp university.
I have been mostly interested in world history and Asian history (but who knows where my search for knowledge will lead me next?)
So you can add one more pin to your group map: Antwerp, Belgium
And since we are still at the start of 2012: can you make me a thread in the 50 books to read in 2012 challenge? I am pretty sure i will not be able to make it to 50, since i am such a slow reader, but i am ready to try anyway ;-)
Nice to meet all of you
Nele
Sure Nele and welcome from Antwerp, Belgium.
We are a global community so you will find a lot of members from Europe and around the world.
I would like to help you get started on the right foot and just want you to become acclimated to how we do citations.
Here are some examples: (we add the book cover, the author's photo if available, and always the author's link)
by Richard Tregaskis (no photo of author available on goodreads)
and
by
Walter Lord
For mentioning simply the author's names; citations would look like the following:
John Keegan
William Raymond Manchester
Eric Hammel
To learn how to do the citations properly for our site, one thread in our Help Desk folder is very helpful:

We more than likely will be starting an American Civil War selection fairly soon so you might want to join in on that selection.
We are glad to have you with us.
