and

Welcome Darren. There are quite a few members from the UK.

I would like to help you get started on the right foot and just want you to become acclimated to how we do citations.

Here are some examples: (we add the book cover, the author's photo if available, and always the author's link)

Guadalcanal Diary (Modern Library War) by Richard Tregaskis by Richard Tregaskis (no photo of author available on goodreads)

and

Day of Infamy Sixtieth-Anniversary Edition by Walter Lord by Walter Lord Walter Lord

For mentioning simply the author's names; citations would look like the following:

John Keegan John Keegan

William Raymond Manchester William Raymond Manchester

Eric Hammel Eric Hammel

To learn how to do the citations properly for our site, one thread in our Help Desk folder is very helpful:

Mechanics of the Board:

http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/2...

Here is the Orientation:

http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1...

Here are the Guidelines:

http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/5...

We more than likely will be starting an American Civil War selection fairly soon so you might want to join in on that selection.

We are glad to have you with us.

Bentley

Note: This is how your citations should look:

A Journey to the Northern Ocean The Adventures of Samuel Hearne by Samuel Hearne by Samuel Hearne (no author's photo available)

Travels in the Interior of Africa (Classic Reprint) by Mungo Park by Mungo Park (no author's photo available))

Boswell's London Journal, 1762-1763 by James Boswell by James Boswell James Boswell

message 3918: by Gerald (new)

Gerald | 200 comments I am 67 years old and retired from hospital management (2 years ago). I also retired from a career in the U.S. Navy, having served on a Landing Ship, Tank (otherwise known as a Long, Slow Target) in Vietnam. I enjoy a wide variety of book genres: biography, classics, contemporary, ebooks, fiction, historical fiction & non-fiction, mystery, suspense, thriller, travel, military, especially naval, legal, action, espionage, techno-thriller, humor. My favorite authors are: Jean M. Auel, Noel Barber, Steve Berry, Tom Clancy, James Clavell, Harlen Coben, Pat Conroy, Michael Crichton, Clive Cussler, Nelson DeMille, Janet Evanovich, Ken Follett, Andrew M. Greeley, John Grisham, Brian Haig, Jack Higgins, Robert Ludlum, Helen MacInnes, James Michener, David Poyer, Bodie Thoene, Nevil Shute, and Stuart Woods. I really enjoyed my first novels by two very good authors from quite a few years ago, i.e., Noel Barber (TANAMARA) and Nevil Shute (A TOWN LIKE ALICE). Shortly after finishing each of those books, I diligently searched the main library stacks for all other books I could find by these two and have subsequently read almost all of them. I particularly like those years leading up to and including World War II, e.g., Herman Wouk’s THE WINDS OF WAR and WAR AND REMEMBRANCE and John Toland’s THE GODS OF WAR. In the last few months I read two great non-fiction histories: Stanley Karnow’s IN OUR IMAGE: AMERICA’S EMPIRE IN THE PHILIPPINES and the middle volume of the life of Theodore Roosevelt concerning his presidency years, i.e., Edmund Morris’ THEODORE REX.

Bryan Craig Welcome, Gerard. Glad you could join us and some great authors and titles. Thanks for sharing :-)

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the reply box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. This is how the authors/books you've mentioned should look:

Pat Conroy Pat Conroy
Michael Crichton Michael Crichton
Clive Cussler Clive Cussler
Nelson DeMille Nelson DeMille

Nancy (nlmcp) | 1 comments Hello everyone.
I'm Nancy. I live in MI. I work for the VA as a social worker. I like to read and the history topics I tend to be interested in are women in history focusing mainly on books of their letters or journals, MI history including information about the U.P., family life. I tend to focus on US history but also enjoy reading about British history.

I'm looking forward to getting ideas and entering discussions.
Right now I am reading
Two Rings A Story of Love and War by Millie Werber

I won it as a First read...which was a lot of fun by the way, looking through all the options to enter.

la' (laaurore) | 9 comments Hi everyone, I am Aurora...I am history lover...obsession is a more appropriate word though... but not just western, eastern rather history in general... My all time prayer is to get my hold on a time-machine or time-turner like Hermoine (HP) and to visit these places in their early glory or when they first architected/built. I have read the history of most civilizations but still unable to quench that penetrating desire of walking through the alleys where conspiracies begin, participating the balls and see Victorians gals throwing seductive glances and wallflowers sitting at the corner, fighting with pirates, Renaissance's modification, Scottish Lairds, Wandering Pagans and their magic skills, Mughals dynasty and their pomp and show, Joseon Kingdom monarchy and their martial art, Sub-continent and their clashes of religion, Igbo culture and the leftover tribes of Africa, Crusade wars and Muslims victory, Egyptian pyramids, Oracles of Delphi, Buddha's sculptors, Trojan War and in person meeting with “face that launched a thousand ships”, the Spartans/Greece heroes & Philosophers , everything…everything with my own eyes, I know it is not possible but a person can dream and trust me there is no end of this in my world.

My interests include Archeology, history,Civilization, Cultures, Myth etc and because I cannot specialize in all of this simultaneously, I ended up selecting English Literature... so please take care of me before I turn in my soul to Lucifer for 24 years in exchange of Mephistopheles (that would be a fun though) ^_^
