Tami Lynne | 6 comments My name is Tami, and I have been an avid reader of history and historical fiction from the very first memory I have. I am excited to see so many readers gathered in one place, loving the written word just as much as the next. My newest journey has taken me to writing, and I have recently published my first historical fiction novel. Still, there is nothing like a great story, both in the telling and the reading. I personally have loved:
Marie Antoinette The Journey by Antonia Fraser by Antonia Fraser
The Six Wives of Henry VIII by Alison Weir by Alison Weir
Lucrezia Borgia A Novel by John Faunce by John Faunce

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) Hi Tami and welcome to the group, I am sure you will have an enjoyable time here discovering new books and authors and talking about old favourites.

Howie | 3 comments Salutations fellow lovers of History!

I'm Howie, 53 years old, living in Clarksburg, WV (yes Civil War fiends the Clarksburg where Stonewall Jackson was born) and currently working on my Masters in you'll never guess what.

My primary areas of interest include but are not limited to: pre Christian Hungary and the Carpathian Basin specifically the Magyar clans and their settlemnt thereof, Corps of Discovery, western expansion & Manifest Destiny (I have been privileged to read a number of pioneer diaries), the Great Depression and the Korean War. I am also easily roped in to biographies of 19th century personalities.

I am a native of California and have what I think is a very good working knowledge of the 21 Missions along the El Camino Real, the Mother Lode and California Gold Rush.

I look forward to our exchanges. Now what did I do with my copy of The Federalist Papers?

Welcome to the group. Where are you taking your Masters? I'm sure you're getting to read quite a bit with that course load even if it's not always what you might read if the works weren't assigned to you.

Does Clarksburg have any tributes to Stonewall?

message 3858: by Bryan (last edited Dec 28, 2011 06:36AM) (new)

Bryan Craig Hi Tami and Howie. Glad you could join us.

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the reply box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. This is how the books you've mentioned should look:

Marie Antoinette The Journey by Antonia Fraser by Antonia Fraser Antonia Fraser
The Six Wives of Henry VIII by Alison Weir by Alison Weir Alison Weir
Lucrezia Borgia A Novel by John Faunce by John Faunce

There is a plaque on the front of the building where the house stood, a statue in front of the Harrison County courthouse and banners all over the place that hang from light poles. Oh yeah and they are talking about constructing a copy of the house about a block from the original site.

What I find interesting is that this is where the break away from Virginia began and was a Union supply point.

Karolyn | 67 comments Hello all,

My name is Karolyn and I currently live in Bloomington, Illinois. I work in agricultural research and have bounced around the Midwest with my work.

I never was a fan of history in school, but have grown to become a history nut of sorts. I read almost all non-fiction, and since moving to the "Land of Lincoln" have been reading a lot of Lincoln and Cival War stuff.

One of my goals for the new year is to read more consistently (not in fits and starts) and I also want to venture into some good discussions. So, stumbling across you all seemed like a good fit. Looking forward to it!

Best,
Karolyn

Welcome Karolyn. There are quite a few members from the midwest.

I would like to help you get started on the right foot and just want you to become acclimated to how we do citations.

Here are some examples: (we add the book cover, the author's photo if available, and always the author's link)

Guadalcanal Diary (Modern Library War) by Richard Tregaskis by Richard Tregaskis (no photo of author available on goodreads)

and

Day of Infamy Sixtieth-Anniversary Edition by Walter Lord by Walter Lord Walter Lord

For mentioning simply the author's names; citations would look like the following:

John Keegan John Keegan

William Raymond Manchester William Raymond Manchester

Eric Hammel Eric Hammel

To learn how to do the citations properly for our site, one thread in our Help Desk folder is very helpful:

Mechanics of the Board:

http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/2...

Here is the Orientation:

http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1...

Here are the Guidelines:

http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/5...

We more than likely will be starting an American Civil War selection fairly soon so you might want to join in on that selection.

We are glad to have you with us.

Karolyn | 67 comments Thanks all, looking forward to getting to know the group! Between the bios and the book selections, I can see myself fitting in here quite well. The cites will take some getting used to, so I'll offer my apologies up front :)

Now if only I could find my copies of the Federalist Papers, I could dive right in. I actually reciently finished The Original Argument by Glenn Beck by Glenn Beck Glenn Beck which is a "modern" re-writing of a selection of the Federalist Papers along with his commentary on them. Beck's politics aside, it was an interesting read and made me really want to go back and work through the originals.

Bentley | 44291 comments Mod
Karolyn, we are very happy to have you with us. And the Federalist Papers have links on the threads to on line text and audio versions if you would like to dive right in.

You seemed to have found the author's link just fine with the above but our citation guideline is not optional but only takes two seconds to do. Just try it out each time until you get the hang of it which you will in no time and visit the Mechanics of the Board thread which will explain everything in great detail for you.

The Original Argument by Glenn Beck by Glenn Beck Glenn Beck

I am not a great proponent of Beck and/or his interpretation of the Federalist Papers which has come under great scrutiny by others. But we are respectful of all perspectives during our discussions and are interested in everybody's point of view. And the Federalist Papers are a very informative set of papers which everybody should read and attempt to interpret and find meaning in. And if he spurred you on to want to go back and tackle them yourself then that is terrific.

The Federalist Papers by Alexander Hamilton by Alexander Hamilton Alexander Hamilton

message 3873: by Karolyn (new)

Karolyn | 67 comments I have a love hate relationship with Beck. I don't agree with everything he has to say by a long shot, but I do find some of his arguments interesting. As I read The Original Argument by Glenn Beck by Glenn Beck Glenn Beck I quickly realized how much I had forgotten (or never bothered to learn) about the original documents and their context. That made it so difficult to form a good opinion of Beck's arguments. Sadly, too few people bother to go back to the primary documents to form their own opinions.

Kristjan | 45 comments Hello all,

My name is Kristjan and I live in Columbus, Ohio. I'm a native of Iceland, but have been living in Ohio for the past 17 years.

I like many different types of books. For fiction, I primarily go for mysteries or thrillers, but I'm acquiring a taste for non-fiction. In my teens, I despised history, so I have quite a deficit there. That also means that I can read almost any history and I will learn something new. I am also trying to catch up a bit on the history of my adopted country. My biggest interest is in military history, particularly special operations, and biographies of significant people.

message 3898: by Becky (new)

Becky Hello all.

My name is Becky, and I've been interested in history since my grandfather gave me a book of mythology.I dont know that I've ever found any particular topic uninteresing, but I tend to focus on mythological perspectives, the classics, military history but focusing on spies and maritime history, and lately women's history with a focus on prosititution/courtesans/ etc. Recently read a fantastic book on the Black Plague, and another for an intro to Byzantine history and it really whetted my appetite.

I volunteer a lot for Librivox.org and Project Gutenberg, and, when dealing with so many classics I like to have suitable background knowledge on the subject. I also hunt, rock climb, play Warmachine, and videogame.

Looking forward to adding to my already too large TBR list with this group :)
