Hi Katrina, David, Merry and Lady Beatnik, welcome to the group.
Apart from all the fascinating discussions about history we also have quite a few fine threads on music (all kinds from all places)
Please come and take a look/listen if you like.
Best,
André

It's a liberating and romantic time.
Gerrie

I'm not all that great at introductions. I guess, I'm sort of all over the place historically speaking. Areas of interest are: Bronze Age Celts, Scottish history, French Revolution and warfare generally. Having said that, I'm always up for learning about other periods and places.

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you are ready to cite a book. (There is a link on the top right of the reply box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

My name is Teri and I am an avid reader and genealogist, among other things. I enjoy reading historical texts, historical fiction, biographies, etc.
I am currently residing in Colorado Springs, CO and am finishing up a degree in History. I am a returning student, holding a Bachelors and Masters in Education and Project Management. Now I go to school for fun getting some formal history studies in as I pursue my passion in Genealogy.

I'm a lover all things political history. Primarily 20-21st Century. I graduated with my degree in History in 2007 from the great University of South Carolina. I stayed there and earned a master's in Higher Education and Student Affairs and also took 18 additional hours of graduate level history. I love it all and want to dive deeper into history via my new kindle.
Thank you all for making this group,
-R
PS: I want to read a biography/autobiography of all the American Presidents. I noticed there is a presidential series on here and I hope to find a list somewhere of the best biographies for each president. Any ideas?
PPS: Thanks Alisa for the welcome and tips. A few of my most recent reads that I strongly recommend all to consider:

Ten Letters: The Stories Americans Tell Their President
Revival: The Struggle for Survival Inside the Obama White House
Zeitoun

PS-Reed, feel free to look at the Presidential Series threads to find some good books. We are going to start a new book in January, so I hope you can join us.

I first came upon Goodreads in 2008, with my love of reading, and my somewhat compulsive need to organize my collection, it just seemed like a natural fit!
I first knew I wanted to be a Historian when I read Guadalcanal Diary by Richard Tregaskis in 5th Grade and Walter Lord's Day of Infamy in 8th Grade. In High School, I discovered the writings of John Keegan, William Manchester, and Eric Hammel.
Merry Christmas,
Mahlon

Great introduction and we are glad to have you with us Mahlon.
But do not forget our citation rules: always add the book cover, the author's photo when available and always the author's link.
Like this:
by Richard Tregaskis (no photo of author available on goodreads)
and
by
Walter Lord
For the authors mentioned, the citations would look like the following:
John Keegan
William Raymond Manchester
Eric Hammel
To learn how to do the citations properly for our site, one thread in our Help Desk folder is very helpful:

Bill here, I just joined up and I'm looking forward to discussing history books with the group. I tend to like American History and Military History mostly, but I'm open to just about anything.
Most recently finished this:

Currently reading:

Outside of history I enjoy fantasy, sci-fi, and biographies.

Hello Nilgun :P How you been?"
Glad to se you here, I have search today a new group and crash to this and cant wait the February to read Dickens :))

I read we're not supposed to post about books in this intro thread, but want to see if I can handle the add book/author tool, so I did want to recommend a book I just finished this morning.
It's called Upheaval in Charleston and is a narrative of a devastating earthquake that centered in South Carolina in 1886. The book does a terrific job of focusing on the issues tearing apart the U.S. during Reconstruction (and post-Reconstruction in the case of 1886) while also introducing readers to some fascinating lesser-known individuals. It was written by co-authors, Susan Millar Williams and Stephen Hoffius. It reminded me a lot of Devil in the White City (Erik Larson) as it has a sub-plot of a murder mystery involving a British (turned American citizen) newspaper editor by the name of Francis Dawson.
Upheaval in Charleston: Earthquake and Murder on the Eve of Jim Crow

Nilgun, since you did not mention a specific book but referenced an author your post would look like this:

Craig, good first effort you are almost there. It is three elements - book cover, author photo (when available) and author link. Your mentions should appear like this:

You can always practice on the mechanics of the board thread, or ask any of the moderators if you need help. It's easy once you do it a couple times.
One last note, this is an intro thread only. There is a coffee, tea, and conversation thread that you should use for other random conversation. Poke around on the threads and you will find it. You will note that there are many threads neatly organized into specific categories. It keeps the conversation focused and allows anyone to participate.
Thanks and glad you joined us.
