William Mego (willmego) Hi everybody, I'm Will, a composer and fencing teacher just outside Chicago, IL. I'm an avid reader, fisherman, fly-fisherman, woodworker/stonemason, amateur photographer, and 'foodie' (I hate that word, but the shoe fits I guess). I've always thought about a book club, but my schedule is too variable to make an evening meeting work, so this is perfect for me. I read a great deal of fiction and non-fiction, but a special place resides in my heart for history, and in fact having just joined the other day, I'm off to the library to pick up
Life on the Mississippi (Signet Classics) by Mark Twain by Mark Twain Mark Twain as well as
Byzantium by Judith Herrin by Judith Herrin Judith Herrin (hopefully I did that right) I look forward to the discussions!

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) Hi Will and welcome to the group, great effort on the citing the books and authors. I hope you enjoy yourself here with your first venture into a book club.

Aussie Rick should have pointed out that you did a yeoman's job but that the author's photos are also required. Bookcover, author's photo, author's links - two out of three ain't bad for the first attempt.

You would only have to go back in to the author's links and get the photo too.

Life on the Mississippi (Signet Classics) by Mark Twain by Mark Twain Mark Twain

Byzantium The Surprising Life of a Medieval Empire by Judith Herrin by Judith Herrin Judith Herrin

Sometimes the author's photos are not available - so we just state after the citation (no author's photo).

In any case, you have done a tremendous job first time out of the gate.

here's a question *edited, I just answered my own question*
Ah, I didn't realize there were two entirely separate author fields, one for name/link and another for picture/link. I have seen the light, thanks!

Alisa (mstaz) Emily, if you love books and history you have come to the right place. Glad you found us!

As you get started please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. This is how books you mention should look:

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot Rebecca Skloot Rebecca Skloot

message 3774: by Debby (new)

Debby | 15 comments Hi all,

My name is Debby, I'm originally from Newfoundland but I've been living in Nova Scotia for about 15 years now. I'm a professional student; I have a science degree, major in environmental studies and minor in geography, and now I'm back, studying history and classics. Yes, that's quite a change in subject matter, but it turns out I'm a far better historian than I am scientist! That being said, everything is connected to everything else, and I'm looking to make environmental history my specialty, an interdisciplinary endeavor that gives the natural world something of a voice in historical inquiry. This is not a history of all the terrible environmental disasters, the word "environment" is a loaded word these days, but is instead, as an example, examining how fire shapes the landscape, or it could be the history of a river, as another example. There is an active effort to describe human activity as happening within natural systems, which they are, and to show how nature influences human activity, and how that human activity in turn shapes the land. I think it's important that we understand ourselves and our history in an environmental context; it's another layer of understanding. That's just a brief description; there are a number of good books out there, maybe the group would be interested in tackling one someday!

My taste in reading also leans toward the ancients; I love classical literature. Euripides was a genius. Mysteries and science fiction are my guilty pleasures. My other hobbies include knitting scarves and other square or rectangular things, a cold beer on a hot day, a hot coffee on a cold day, all kinds of games, and outdoorsy activities with my sweetheart, like hiking and biking and camping and canoeing.

Looking forward to some good chats!

Deb

Hello Debby,

Welcome to the History Book Club. We are happy to have you with us. Nova Scotia is a beautiful spot. Where in Nova Scotia (Cape Breton, by Sydney, by Halifax). Environmental history does sound interesting. And what a wonderful introduction. I think we all like that cold beer on a hot day and never mind the coffee - I drink a lot of that per day.

In mentioning Euripides you have to cite him.

David Todd (davidatodd) | 3 comments Hello, history group members.

I'm fairly new to Goodreads, and this is my first group to join. I'm a native Rhode Islander in exile in Arkansas, having stopped in Kansas City, Saudi Arabia, North Carolina, and Kuwait during the last 38 years. I'm a civil engineer by profession, and a lover of history forever. It was my favorite subject in school, and I probably should have been an historian. There's not much I love better than reading history, writing about history, and discussing history. Retirement is only 6 years and 16 days away.

My current passion is digging into original source documents. It's amazing how much is available through the Internet.

Off now to read some threads,
David Todd

David, welcome to the History Book Club. We are glad to have you here and your introduction was very interesting.

Visited Little Rock and spent some time there; got a chance to sample some of the local food and visited the Clinton Museum; actually liked Arkansas more than I imagined I would. Interesting city. Are you located near Little Rock?

Going from New England to so many different global spots must have been fascinating and I am sure you learned a lot along the way.

Hope you find your stay enjoyable. Special thanks to Alisa for showing you the ropes.
