Ooops, sorry guys. I didn't mean to tread over the line of self-promotion and really do have an abiding interest in History . . . pretty much all I'm reading right now.

Very excited to see the threads on Patrick O'Brien and Colleen McCullough here. I've read and reread them!

No problem Benjamin.

Here is the link to the Mechanics of the Board thread which will help you out with how we do citations.

For authors, we cite the author's photo when available and always the author's link.

For books, we add the bookcover, then the author's photo when available and always the author's link.

Patrick O'Brian Patrick O'Brian

Colleen McCullough Colleen McCullough

They both are great authors Benjamin for sure.

Book Example:

Master and Commander (Aubrey/Maturin, #1) by Patrick O'Brian by Patrick O'Brian Patrick O'Brian

John Gordon (fsmfan) | 5 comments Hello fellow history buffs,
I am amazed by the amount of material and discussion available for this group. Bentley - this must take you a lot of time!
I have been reading history for years. My wife and friends think my penchant for history is a little geeky, I have my book collection organised chronologically from Herotodus "Histories" through to Thomas Ricks "Fiasco". Many many hours of pleasure reading about real people, real events and real drama. The focus is military history although not exclusively. I don't really have any friends interested in history as I am, so joining this group seems like a good idea.
I fly helicopters, live in Australia, am happily married, have a one year old son, and enjoy reading (obviously), movies, the outdoors and spending time with my family.
Looking forward to discussing books and history with you.

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) Hi John and welcome to the group. I am sure you will find a lot here to keep you interested. Good to see another Australian join the group, hope you to chat with you more about some of your favourite history books.

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the reply box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

This is how a book that you mention in a post should look:

The Histories by Herodotus by Herodotus Herodotus

Fiasco The American Military Adventure in Iraq by Thomas E. Ricks by Thomas E. Ricks
(a very decent account indeed!)

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) Hi Stephanie, good effort, if possible can you cite your books like this:

Mayflower A Story of Courage, Community, and War by Nathaniel Philbrick by Nathaniel Philbrick Nathaniel Philbrick

Use the cover button for the book, if it has one, as well as for the author if he has a photo. It makes it easier to link to the book and author for other readers, but good effort and a pretty good book as well :)

Hi,

My name is Wesley. I'm an Army Intelligence Officer and am currently assigned to the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell. I've been in the Army almost 5 years. I'm working on a Master's in Military History. I love the link that I often find between history and intelligence analysis. I'm always looking at historical analysis and love how I get to use my love of history on a day to day basis.

I really joined the site to share thoughts with other people who love to read history and keep me motivated to stay up on those late nights to get in some extra reading.

I'm looking forward to joining in on discussions and learning from everybody. Thanks

- Wesley
