Jeri (jerimarie) | 1 comments Greetings!

My name is Jeri and I live in North Carolina. Although, I do have summer homes in Solace, Braavos, the Black Forest and Oxford, among others. :) I like to read and dive into different worlds and stories. A good yarn, is a good yarn. That being said, I read a variety of genres. Such as the classics, fantasy, historical, horror, mystery/suspense, and a little sci-fi. I am not a fan of romance by itself. If it is historical romance, I may give it a try. I also enjoy some young adult novels as well.
My favorite book is Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. Other favorites are the Song of Ice and Fire series by George RR Martin, Dragonlance by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman, His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman, Deerskin by Robin McKinley, Cabal by Clive Barker, and Watchers by Dean Koontz. Besides these authors, other authors I really enjoy are Juliet Marillier, Rick Riordan, Phillipa Gregory, Laurell K Hamilton {Merry Gentry series}, Alice Borchardt, Charlaine Harris, Marion Zimmer Bradley, Morgan Llywelyn, and Carrie Ryan. My favorite poet is Percy Shelley-he has my heart.

I am fairly new to the workings of goodreads. So, please add me as a friend, if you would like. And recommend me a good book! :)

Bryan Craig Welcome, Jeri. Glad you could join us.

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the reply box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. This is how the authors/books you've mentioned should look:

Frankenstein by Mary Shelley Mary Shelley Mary Shelley
A Song of Ice and Fire 4-Book Boxed Set by George R.R. Martin George R.R. Martin George R.R. Martin
Dragonlance Chronicles Dragons of Autumn Twilight/Dragons of Winter Night/Dragons of Spring Dawning (Collectors Edition) by Margaret Weis Margaret Weis Margaret Weis
His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman Philip Pullman Philip Pullman
Deerskin by Robin McKinley Robin McKinley Robin McKinley

Mara Hi everyone!

My name is Mara, and I'm glad to find such a great community for group discussions. My love of reading started at a young age. I have fond memories of participating in the Great Books program at my elementary school. I am an attorney and live in Florida. I look forward to learning more about different historical periods. One of my favorite books is The Time-traveller's Guide to Medieval England by Ian Mortimer. I am fascinated with English history and how it has impacted our government and its laws.

I am new to this website and look forward to participating in this book club.

My name is Håvard Bergli. I am living in Oslo, Norway. Educated as lawyer but now working in real estate. I have always been interested in history and was at one point in time studying Intellectual History in the university as my main topic. That is however history now... Hope to get some inspiration fromt this group and look forward to participate.

We are glad to have you Håvard.

Thank you to Bryan and Alisa for their assistance and greetings. What is Intellectual History?

message 3323: by Håvard (new)

Håvard (abelb) | 2 comments Alisa, Bentley and Brian

Thanks for welcoming me.

Bentley: Maybe I chose a misleading term (in Norwegian the term is Idehistorie). Maybe the term History of Ideas is more appropriate. We studied the history of philosophy, literature, art, science, religion, and other more vague ideas of certain periods (the "mentality" of a given period). In Norway - as I also believe is the case in several other European countries - this area of history is organized as a separate entity with its own professors and classes etc and you can get a separate degree in Idehistorie. It is separated from "real" history which then are more concerned with politics, wars, nations and empires etc. I think I remember from my student days that we learned that this division - which may be (and is) debated - is not found in Anglo-American universities.

message 3324: by Bryan (new)

Bryan Craig I took a college class on American intellectual history, but I doubt it is taught anymore. I like the term "history of ideas", too.

Mindy | 2 comments Good Evening. I am Mindy. I love books. I love history and non fiction but I also love a good mystery.

Emergency medicine is my trade so I also love reading about the human body and biology.

I was born 60 yrs too late. I love the era of the 1920s and 30s. This time in history fascinates me. I just read The Ellis Island Interviews. Life seemed hard but so much simpler then.

I look forward to finding out what others are reading.

Mindy,

Specifically, the book you mentioned should look like the following:

Ellis Island Interviews (Immigrants Tell Their Stories In Their Own Words) by Peter Morton Coan by Peter Morton Coan

Normally, you should always add the bookcover, the author's photo and the author's link which is the author's name in linkable text. Sometimes as in the case of the book you cited; the author's photo may not be available so you simply add just two of the components which are available. Adding citations properly is part of our rules and guidelines but if you need any additional help we are here to help you.

Welcome to you and thanks to Alisa for adding some helpful links.

Jon | 5 comments Hi,

My Name is Jon. I am 37 and presently I live in Long Beach with my wife, daughter (2 years old), a large dog and a docile cat. I am in the shipping industry and so my locations of employment are at the ports, LA and Long Beach being the largest. I have a MBA and I completed my undergraduate at the California Maritime Academy - so I've done some deep sea sailing.

My Father was in the US Navy so I grew up a military brat. This exposure of living in a number of different places such as Saudi Arabia and my parents focus on education has made me an avid reader. My favorite subjects are military history, particularly World War 2. Next in line is American History. I am more of a contemporary history buff as well as American History because I can identify with the concepts and times more readily. I also tend to gravitate to present authors of History because I have found the classics to be more challenging to understand. I do try to read about other cultures when the subject suits me. In summary, I am much more into non-fiction because it happened than Fiction unless it happens to be historical fiction work such as Ken Follett and Jeff Shaara.

Besides reading, as far as hobbies I love to exercise but had neck surgery in April/2011 ala Peyton Manning's type procedure so I am contiuning to rehab at this time. My other interests are watching Football, attending events, eating good food, traveling and spending time with my family. I am excited to learn more and engage with the History Club.Ken Follett Ken Follett Jeff Shaara Jeff Shaara

Ivan | 1 comments Greetings.
I'm Ivan and I come from Croatia. I graduated history on Hrvatski Studiji but haven't worked in my field so far (although I hope to).
As my parents tell me I loved reading ever since I was old enough to flip pages and look at pretty pictures. I haven't changed much since then and I still remain a passionate reader. If anything, my book addiction got even worse since I got Kindle as I got easier access to many books on English.
I enjoy historical fiction, fantasy, SF but I give a chance to books of different genre. I have only joined goodreads recently in hope to find books I might enjoy more easily.
