Bryan Craig Hi Paula and welcome. Glad you could join us.

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the reply box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. This is how the books you've mentioned should look:

A Distant Mirror The Calamitous 14th Century by Barbara W. Tuchman Barbara W. Tuchman Barbara W. Tuchman

More information:

Take a few moments to read the orientation:

And our guidelines:

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask us moderators. I look forward to your postings.

Carol Keogh (Goodfellow) (carolgoodfellowkeogh) | 1 comments Hi I am Carol. I love books of all kinds. I especially love history, particularly Russia, China and India. I enjoyed reading the threads on Dimblebys' journey in Russia. I have this book but I have not yet started it.
I am not in any way an academic but I hope that I can make a contribution to some discussions. I had a read through all of the guidelines, I will just have to figure out the ad/book thing.

Hello Carol,

We are sorry that we did not see you over here. Usually one of us greets newcomers right away.

I want to personally welcome you to the History Book Club. We love folks who love books and history here so you will fit right in. If you have any suggestions for good books, please feel free to let us all know. I am glad that you are enjoying the buddy read thread on Dimbleby's book. Also, if you have any ideas for threads on Russia, China and India beyond what we have, please by all means let us know. And though we do have some academics, we are for the most part just a good group of folks who enjoy good non fiction books, historical fiction and good conversation...so you will fit right in quite easily.

Just to help you get started: whenever citing any books and/or even when you are simply citing just authors, you must for a book, utilize the add book/author feature of goodreads and always add the book cover, the author's photo when available and always the author's link which is the author's name in linkable text.

If you are adding simply an author's name, then you must add the author's photo when available and the author's link (which is the author's name in linkable text).

The guidelines are not optional and we want everybody to get off to a great start.

Here are some examples if you mention any authors:

Agatha Christie Agatha Christie

Rex Stout Rex Stout

Ngaio Marsh Ngaio Marsh

If you are citing a book and I will use an Agatha Christie book as an example, this is how that book would look:

Elephants Can Remember by Agatha Christie by Agatha Christie Agatha Christie

If you would like to take a look at our rules and guidelines and orientation; here are a few links:

Guidelines

Mechanics of the Board - Help Desk

Orientation

We are delighted to have you and hope you will enjoy yourself here.

Also, you mentioned a book and author so the citation should look like this:

Russia A Journey to the Heart of a Land and its People by Jonathan Dimbleby by Jonathan Dimbleby - (no photo available)

All best,

Bentley

Joshua Hello everyone. My name is Joshua.
I stumbled upon your group this evening, and since I've always enjoyed history, I decided to join. In particular, I've always found Medieval history the most fascinating. Getting more specific, I prefer British medieval history. In fact, I'm currently reading Ecclesiastical History of the English People by Bede. I'm quite enjoying it. I'm going to follow it up with The History of the Kings of Britain, which is a bit more fantastical and a bit less historical.
I'm looking forward to exploring more of the group when I have the time, but for now, I'll stick with this introduction.

Hello Joshua and Bhamielec,

Welcome to the History Book Club. Joshua, glad you stumbled across our group and we are glad to have you. We have a spotlighted read beginning next Monday which may be one you would be interested in. British Medieval History is a great subject matter. Becky, here you will find more good non fiction recommendations than you probably can read in a lifetime so you also have found a good spot.

We love folks who love books and/or history here so you both will fit right in. If you have any suggestions for good books, please feel free to let us all know.

Just to help you get started: whenever citing any books and/or even when you are simply citing just authors, you must for a book, utilize the add book/author feature of goodreads and always add the book cover, the author's photo when available and always the author's link which is the author's name in linkable text.

If you would like to take a look at our rules and guidelines and orientation; here are a few links:

Guidelines

About Us - The History Book Club

Mechanics of the Board - Help Desk

We are delighted to have you and hope you will enjoy yourself here.

Also Joshua, you mentioned a book and author so the citation should look like this:

Ecclesiastical History of the English People (Penguin Classics) by Bede by Bede Bede

The book has a goodreads book cover so we always add that first, then there is an author's photo available so we always add that next if there is one and then finally the author's link which is the author's name in linkable text.

The History of the Kings of Britain (Penguin Classics) by Geoffrey of Monmouth by Geoffrey of Monmouth

For the second book you mentioned; I am assuming you meant the one above. That is why we do specific citations in order to assist our readers so that they indeed have the same book we are referring to with the correct edition, author, etc.

Hope all of this helps rather than confuse; but you will both get the hang of it very soon and we are all here to help you.

All best,

Bentley

Mimi V (naomi_v) | 47 comments hi! i just read two really good history books and thought i'd see if there was a group on Goodreads that would be a good place to find more ideas. i just finished reading "In the Garden of Beasts" by Erik Larson, which i found to be a really good book about the American ambassador and his family in Berlin during the early 30s, as Hitler consolidated poower.

the other book i've read recently is "To End All Wars: A Story of Loyalty and Rebellion, 1914-1918" by Adam Hochschild. this is about the first world war, but has the interesting perspective of people who opposed the war, as well as those who waged it; and their sometimes surprising relationships to each other.

you might think i read a lot of war history, but that's not the case. i usually shy away from that type of thing, but still found Hochschild's book really fascinating.

looking forward to exchanging ideas with the group!

Reading Wolf (readingwolfminda) Hello I am Minda. I have been in love with History since I was about 6 years old. I used to dream of being an archaeologist. I first fell in love with Egyptian history, then Mediterranean (by which I mean Etruscan, Roman Empire, Greek, etc.), next came prehistoric man, and finally English history.

I took a History class every year of high school, read historical fiction/nonfiction on my own (imagine not needing to beg a teen to do that now!) and finally carried my love to college where I fell in love with the history of science. Sadly I needed to take time off from my last semester (15 credits shy) because of medical reasons. C'est la vie.

So right now I am a housewife, and trucking companion. I love traveling. I hope to use it to my benefit by seeing a lot of historical sites and perhaps some museums. (Already seen the archaeological site at the Grand Canyon, the original pony express building, and some other sites here and there) I still love archaeology but lets just say it would have to be a lot of night digs in order for me to participate. LOL.

So that's about it with me. *scratches head* Oh and I read a lot of fiction, I'm becoming picky about what nonfiction I read, and I have a soft spot for dystopia. So that should cover most of my information.
