Barbara (barbara55) | 23 comments Hi. I'm Barbara. I'm a recently retired person living in New England, but planning to move back to my native Virginia soon. I have many varied hobbies and interests and find my reading follows suit. I'm usually reading/listening to several books at once. My greatest interests are American history, Presidential biographies, gardening, mysteries and travel. I've been reading the posts here for a few months and decided I should actually participate.

Max Welcome Barbara, nice to meet you!

message 2655: by Alisa (new)

Alisa (mstaz) Welcome Barbara, we are glad you decide to participate and glad you introduced yourself. If you are already exploring the threads then you know there is a lot here so please insert yourself into the discussion wherever you like.

You may have already noticed that we adhere to guidelines when mentioning books and authors. Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. This is how books you mention should look:

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot Rebecca Skloot Rebecca Skloot

Alisa (mstaz) Rajiv, welcome to the grouop we are glad you joined. With your intersts I am sure you will find plenty here to discuss with other members.

Thank you for posting the author photos, it is one of our requirements for participation that books and authors are cited properly. If you have not already done so, please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. You would cite the book similar to how you have cited the authors above. This is how the book you mentioned should look:

Openbooks Hi, I'm Susan. I am particularly interested in American history, especially when told from lesser known perspectives. Right now I'm reading The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot (andSearching for Tamsen Donner by Gabrielle Burton. They're actually tying together in interesting ways, in that they're both about the lost stories of women being refound (through the tracing of the human stories behind the HeLa cells in Henrietta Lacks and the focus on the female pioneer experience, collection of Tamsen Donner's real letters, etc., in Searching.)

Mary (johnsonmaryj) | 2 comments Hello everyone. I'm Mary, a semi-retired school librarian, now an education consultant with the Library of Congress "Teaching with Primary Sources" program at Metropolitan State College of Denver. I do workshops for educators on doing inquiry through primary sources, which probably explains why one of my favorite activities is reading history, including the notes.

Right now, I'm reading Sarah Bakewell's How to Live: A Life of Montaigne in one question and twenty attempts at an answer. How to Live Or a Life of Montaigne in One Question and Twenty Attempts at an Answer by Sarah Bakewell

Welcome Rajiv,

It is good to have folks from around the world join the History Book Club. We are honored to have everyone join and we are a global community.

Alisa has been very busy helping out all newcomers and a special thank you to her for doing that.

Rajiv, you seem to have the add photo function down and you just need to learn how to add the author's link and the bookcover.

We look forward to your posting in those areas where we need assistance and you are specifically interested in reading.

We have some other folks who are living in the Netherlands who you may enjoy meeting as well.

All best,

Bentley

Hello Mary,

Thank you for joining the History Book Club. We do have a few guidelines and an orientation that I would like you to take a look at and familiarize yourself with.

Guidelines:

http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/5...

Orientation:

http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1...

Mechanics of the Board:

http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/2...

The add book/author feature:

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the reply box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. This is how the book you've mentioned should look:

In Europe by Geert Mak by Geert Mak

Normally, we always add three parts: the bookcover, the author's photo when available and always the author's link which is the author's name in linkable text. The book you cited did not have an author's photo in goodreads so there were only two segments.

Glad you found goodreads and the HBC.

Bentley

message 2676: by Bryan (new)

Bryan Craig That's right Bentley. Think of the citation in three parts: 1.bookcover (if there is one. If not add just title link); 2. author picture (if there is one); 3. author link.

Hope that helps Mary.

Elizabeth S (esorenson) | 2011 comments Welcome to both Marys. :)

To the first Mary, it sounds like you have a very interesting job. I'm sure you'll fit right in around here.

To the second Mary, welcome to the group and to goodreads. They are both very addicting and will shortly threaten to take up all your time. Good thing we all like to read books, too, so that takes us off our computers sometimes!

Jason | 104 comments Hi,

My name is Jason. I have had an interest in history since college when I took my first serious courses in history. I don't have a degree in history, but computer information systems. I wanted to learn more history on my own though so, I now have a history podcast and blog (I won't plug it here) and enjoy reading non-fiction in general but specifically history books. I especially enjoy obscure history. Thanks to the creator of this group for giving us all a place to discuss our interest! I look forward to talking to you all.

Thanks,
Jason

I go through phases where I'm into different eras or topics, but my shelf has books on everything from medieval Japan to the US Army in Afghanistan. I enjoy archaeology a lot, too.

If I ever get back to school, it might be for archaeology.
