That sounds... sexy.

message 54: by Sarah (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:10PM) (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) Well, if it's just the three of us, it would be easier on myspace IM or MSN. I'm logged into both, and also yahoo.

Erica Poole | 199 comments sorry, totally forgot i made plans with a friend, tried to get back earlier!

anyone still chatting??

message 57: by Sarah (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:10PM) (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) OK, now we have 4! So... what can we say about the book that hasn't already been said? What do you think about Clare's obsession with birds and flight?

message 58: by Meghan (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:10PM) (new)

Meghan I'm here Erica.

message 59: by Meghan (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:10PM) (new)

Meghan So just to get things rolling...

what was your favorite part?

message 60: by Sarah (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:10PM) (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) It's hard to say. There were a lot of parts I liked, some because they were funny, some because they were poignant.

message 61: by Meghan (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:10PM) (new)

Meghan I loved the settings. I felt like it was another character. I wonder if it would have worked as well if she set it New Mexico and Henry met Clare in a cactus farm?

When Joe Thornton made that pass to Patrick Marleau for the amazing score...

Oh wait. Sorry, wrong obsession!

message 63: by Erica (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:10PM) (new)

Erica Poole | 199 comments I honestly can't say that I have one favorite part. It took me a while to get into the rhythm of the book but all of a sudden it clicked.

I know you are going to think I'm soooo distracted, but I just got a call that my cousin just had twin girls!

message 65: by Erica (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:10PM) (new)

Erica Poole | 199 comments Personally, I am not familiar with any of the areas he was in, but it certainly did give it a 'flavor'.

message 66: by Sarah (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:10PM) (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) Part of the reason you loved the settings, I think, is because it was familiar to you. I've never been to Chicago and have only been to Michigan a few times, so for me, it might as well have been in New Mexico.

But that's also part of the reason I enjoy Steinbeck and Hammet and even fluff writers like Kyra Davis and Karen Joy Fowler. I get a kick out of the familiar setting.

message 67: by Meghan (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:10PM) (new)

Meghan No hockey references!! :p

message 68: by Erica (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:10PM) (new)

Erica Poole | 199 comments Aw, lucky girl. Or guy, either way, lucky parents.

message 69: by Sarah (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:10PM) (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) That's exciting, Michele!

message 70: by Erica (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:10PM) (new)

Erica Poole | 199 comments I think I identified the best with Clare's struggle to have a baby, it hit me personally quite hard.

message 71: by Erica (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:10PM) (new)

Erica Poole | 199 comments So, question, do you guys all know each other outside of the cyber world?

message 72: by Erica (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:10PM) (new)

Erica Poole | 199 comments And if y'all want to go to a messenger and set up a group chat, that is cool with me.

message 73: by Meghan (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:10PM) (new)

Meghan Yeah. It's like the movie Lakehouse. I loved that I knew the area.

I just loved that she made a Bronner's reference. SO Michigan!

So who was your favorite character? Least fave?

message 74: by Sarah (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:10PM) (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) Erica, that also hit me close to home.

Meghan and I have known each other for about 6 years. We're best friends, but we did meet on the web.

Michele and I met here and have yet to meet in person, but we live so close to each other that we're trying to arrange it!

message 75: by Sarah (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:10PM) (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) I don't know about favorite character. I liked both Henry and Clare but there were aspects of them I did not like. I did not care for Gomez, Ingrid, or Gomez's wife (blanking on the name). I really liked the doctor.

message 76: by Meghan (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:10PM) (new)

Meghan Sarah and I are friends. She is the reason behind all my cyber addictions!

Met you and Michele here.

message 77: by Sarah (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:10PM) (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) I think an IM chat would be a lot easier. And I could post the transcript afterword for those who couldn't join us.

message 78: by Sarah (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:10PM) (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) Meghan, you had cyber addictions before you met me!! Alias online game, anyone?

She's 46 and they're her first. Gives me hope! My aunt and uncle now have 7 grandchildren - all girls! Two sets of twins, too.

Anyway, for me the whole baby struggle drug. Not because I didn't understand the desire, but because I think when it becomes an obsession and destroys the joys you do have in life, something is very off. We can do that with anything in life and I just find that wrong. Plus I have known and loved too many adoptees to not think that that is a wonderful option.

message 81: by Meghan (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:10PM) (new)

Meghan Nope...just a casual and late starter...then
I met you and it all went downhill...heh

message 82: by Erica (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:10PM) (new)

Erica Poole | 199 comments Ah ok.

Well I liked Alba the best really, I keep saying that I think she should have her own book, dare I say a sequel. I hated Gomez, from the beginning he felt slick and oily to me. Never did like him, even when he was being a nice guy.

message 83: by Sarah (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:10PM) (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) I think when you go through it (infertility or any trouble conceiving), it gives a new perspective. It's not just the fact that it becomes an obsession like anything else can become. It's hormonal and physical and deeply emotional. It didn't drag at all for me because I could completely understand that desire to have a child. Of course, if the biological way does not work out, I would definitely consider adoption. But it's not just having a child. Part of the desire is wanting to be pregnant.

message 84: by Erica (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:10PM) (new)

Erica Poole | 199 comments IM chat, yes!

message 85: by Meghan (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:10PM) (new)

Meghan I hear you on the adoption thing Michele, as I'm a beneficiary of it. But I unfortunately know way too many friends who struggle with this. None of them are to Clare's point but their pain is palatable. I thought the author made it very realistic.

message 86: by Meghan (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:10PM) (new)

Meghan Yeah...how did Gomez and Henry be best friends?

I didn't mind Gomez at all. I guess I got him. He loved someone and she loved someone else. I think he would have been "all in" with Clare. But he saw that that would never happen. I commend him for befriending Henry in spite of his love. I just think it's sad that he couldn't let that love go and really be with Charisse. I just think his smoking was annoying.

message 88: by Sarah (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:10PM) (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) And I'm fortunate. I have never had a miscarriage. I can't imagine what that must be like, the kind of grief it would cause. But I can understand that it makes the desire even stronger.

message 89: by Erica (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:10PM) (new)

Erica Poole | 199 comments I agree with you Sarah, I will totally adopt if I cannot have my own, actually I would be happy just having one, going through it all once, etc, and then adopting. But I completely see how women can lose it when they can't have kids. I am not at that point, and hope not to be, but I can see it being something to keep a close watch on!

I helped a dear friend at the time through a miscarriage. It was her first pregnancy. We had a service with just four of us there because we as humans need those things to release and heal.

Meghan Honestly before my daughter I never got the miscarriage thing. Now I can't even fathom that pain. Can you imagine for Clare knowing it was her body that was attacking it?
