2. are you maybe leaving out a previous part where she was there to calm him and fix his dinner? she is unusually preoccupied w/ his diet...3. perhaps SM thought it added to the visual scene- instead of just somewhere on the table, and maybe by his elbow was closer and she didn't wanna take the time to put it in front of him, though that wouln't make a lot of sense...dunno.
4. I would assume she said breakable rather than fragile or something else so that she could follow it up w/ "I was going to have to break him."
I hadn't thought myself confused by any of it, but now you've got me wondering why bella would just NOW feel it a sacrifice to become a vampire...is she saying she's feeling the sacrifice of giving jacob up for edward?
1. Bella had to wait to see Jacob until Charlie left because she had to keep up the illusion that she was having a sleep-over with Alice. So then as soon as Charlie leaves the Black house Bella rushes over to see Jacob but he is unconscious so she doesn't get to talk to him. Then she has to go home to pretend she is just getting back from the sleep-over, fix Charlie's dinner and pretend to learn about Jacob getting injured. We don't actually get a description in the book about the first time she goes to see Jake except for that small mention. After fixing Charlie dinner she goes over again and that's when they have a conversation.2 & 3. She's fixing his dinner like she always does
4. I agree with Kirby I think the choice of the word "breakable" was to be able to connect it to the thought that she would have to break him. Also he is broken, all of his bones were broken and it's the first time she's ever seen him so vulnerable.
I think giving up Jacob is the hardest part for her about giving up being human. Because she believes at this point that they can't even remain friends and she will never see him again. This is the part where she had to come to terms with that. Also remember that in Breaking Dawn it is explained that once Renesmee is born and Jacob imprints the strong connection Jake and Bella feel toward each other is broken for both of them. Perhaps it is her turning that breaks it for her, and his imprinting that breaks it for him but up until that point they do have a strong connection that is not stronger than her love for Edward but still hard for her to give up. She doesn't understand it, but she feels a pull toward Jacob. I think it has to do with the fact that she needs to stay close to him so that he can eventually meet Renesmee

page 589 (in the hardback edition) Bella has just returned home to "calm" Charlie, before she visits injured Jacob. Charlie doesn't seem very worried about Jacob, which I think is weird. He compliments Edward for being responsible and then this, very confusing conversation happens.
"Really, Bella, Carlisle said Jake will be up and around in no time. Said it looked a lot worse than it was. He's going to be fine."
I just nodded.
(THIS IS THE PART THAT CONFUSES ME!)
Jacob had looked so...strangely fragile when I'd hurried down to see him as soon as Charlie had left. He'd had braces everywhere-Carlisle said there was no point in plaster, as fast as he was healing. His face had been pale and drawn, deeply unconscious though he was at the time. Breakable. Huge as he was, he'd looked very breakable. Maybe that had just been my imagination, coupled with the knowledge that I was going to have to break him.
If only I could be struck by lightning and be split in two. Preferably painfully. For the first time, giving up being human felt like a true sacrifice. Like it might be too much to lose.
I put Charlie's dinner on the table next to his elbow and headed to the door.
Here are the reasons why I am confused:
1. When did she see him? The scene where she visits Jacob follows the dinner conversation?
2. Why does she then put his dinner on the table?
3. Why does it say next to his elbow?
4. The use of the word "breakable" bothers me. It seems like something I would have written in high school.
Seriously though, what is going on in this selection? It says she rushed out the door to visit Jacob as soon as Charlie left? Was there a different time this happened that I am forgetting about? I am confused just writing about it...does this even make sense? It is irking me...
