Is there such a thing as a good romance?

I've been thinking about how difficult it is to write romantic love and sex related scenes and have started noticing that even my favourite authors do these quite badly. JK Rowling's Harry/Ginny plotline being a case in point... Does anyone know of a non-romance writer who does romance well?

Well I can see why the romantic scenes in Harry Potter were bland (I haven't read HP in years). But Harry Potter wasn't made to be a romance series which is why I would think it wasn't the best scenes. Now I personally don't know what other books you read but if you're talking about young adult books, sex scenes aren't described, if anything they're hinted and all the say is that "it doesn't matter where it was, it was with who" sort of thing. Very corny.

That is why I read adult romances, I think they're better written (most of them)

Well Cassandra Clare's books are pretty romancy, but their more sci-fi than anything else. I'd give them a try. Or the author of wicked lovely. Or the guy who wrote Uglies. I think I need more details on what you're looking for

Nina Gray Not particularly looking for romance, rather wondering whether there is such a thing. I guess I'm bored of the tropes and would like to see a relation ...more

Hard question to answer. I have a room full of books I think are good romances or contain good romances. But it sounds like you don't really like what is typically known as romance in literature.

Stephen King is one of the few writers I've ever read who can write actual love in to a book without making it sleazy or the focus of the entire story. Bag of Bones, Lisey's Story, The Dark Tower Series--some of the best relationships I've ever read in books. And fortunately, they aren't the focal points of all the events that take place.

They exist, they are just not as common or famous as, say, Harry Potter. John Green (An Abundance of Katherines, The Fault in Our Stars) does them well, although he also tends to work them in as part of the central plot. Malinda Lo (Ash, Huntress) does an excellent job, particularly with romances between characters who aren't sure they're ready for romance or that the other person is and her romances (especially in Huntress) are definitely not the focuses of her stories. There are a lot out there, they just aren't as easy to find with a search, since the romance isn't generally the focus of the story.
