I think it settles Simmons' opinions about science fiction and at least defines what he thinks he's writing. For the record (and it is probably obvious from my posts on other discussions) I pretty much agree with his dislike of the term "sci-fi" and the limitations inherent in being classified as a genre writer.
For the record (and it is probably obvious from my posts on other discussions) I pretty much agree with his dislike of the term "sci-fi" and the limitations inherent in being classified as a genre writer. One thing about Simmons is that if he wanted to be more popular and make more money he would stick to either Sci-Fi or horror. As he said he could have churned out sequel after sequel in the Hyperion universe and had them all sell. Or in the Carrion Comfort universe (one of his better horror books).
His constant genre jumping I think is him trying to avoid being pigenholed.
