I might be paraphrasing here, but: "The darkness stuck to her face like a thick paste." The quote itself isn't so special, but it struck me how brilliant the author was that he could describe something so accurately. (from Blindness by Jose Saramago).

It depends on the story. First person allows for a more personal experience, but the risk of me absolutely hating the main character is a lot higher then (IMO).
