Christy (christymtidwell) | 149 comments You might like Low Town by Daniel Polansky - it's basically a noir crime novel set in a fantasy world - or, depending on how much romance you can handle as part of your paranormal mysteries, Charlaine Harris's Sookie Stackhouse series. Personally, I think Low Town is really well done but it might not be as paranormal as you want and I don't enjoy the Sookie Stackhouse books all much myself, but they feature mystery, paranormal, and a female protagonist.

Darcy (drokka) Janet Evanovich has a few books that might work as there are paranormal characters defined as "Unmentionables". The first few are the 'Between The Numbers' novels, which has developed into a series without the Stephanie Plumb character. The first of these is Wicked Appetite, the second one comes out in June.

Elizabeth Cárdenas (elizabetj) How about The City and the City. It is a crime novel in which the inspector must travel between two cities to investigate. The crossing is complicated because this "is a border crossing like no other, a journey as psychic as it is physical, a shift in perception, a seeing of the unseen."

Kay (rekindling) | 28 comments Have you read Darkfever? It features a very strong female protagonist as she sets off to Ireland to find her sister's murderer. The paranormal elements are strong, as the book revolves around fairies more so than the crime itself. But the book is very, very fun to read.

The Devil You Know is the beginning of a series not dissimilar to Dresden. Mike Carey, the author, wrote for Hellblazer: All His Engines for while, and the main character in the series feels more like John Constantine than like Harry Dresden.

Oh, and Already Dead. (I haven't read it so I can't vouch, but judging from other Huston books I've read, it's probably pretty gritty and smart-assed.)

Emilia | 2 comments Have you read The Name of the Star by Maureen Johnson? It's a YA paranormal mystery/thriller and the protagonist is female. I really enjoyed it.

Mir | 191 comments Spiral Hunt has a female protagonist with supernatural tracking abilities. Set in present-day Boston.

Zoo City. Contemporary South African ghetto, but... uh, I don't know how to explain the premise in a way that doesn't sound bizarre or stupid, which is isn't when you're reading it.

Greywalker has a woman PI who gets a sort of esp after a head injury.

Tracey (stewartry) Christy already mentioned Charlaine Harris's Sookie Stackhouse series, and she also has another series that starts with Grave Sight Harper Connelly 1. I enjoyed the first one; it's very different, pretty dark, and really pretty good.

whimsicalmeerkat | 126 comments Not a female protagonist, but I really like the Peter Grant series by Ben Aaronovitch.

Betsy | 190 comments I was just going to recommend the Peter Grant series. It's about a London rookie cop who discovers he is a wizard and is drafted into the wizard detail. The thing I like about it is that somehow the magic, though that's what he must investigate and it's integral to the story, is somehow treated as though it's no big deal. Just part of the job. And it's pretty imaginative. (view spoiler)
