"Aye, that you are," said he, smiling nastily, but at a sudden sweeping gesture from his female companion he seemed to relent.
I shrugged, though I wondered by what power this woman was using to keep my brother in line; blackmail, maybe?
I had little time to think on it however, for a-sudden as I watched, the empty salad-bowl, at a word, from the lady, rose into the air gathering up its spilt contents in the same moment.
"The meal will suffice," Nora said to my brother, as she seated herself at the table where, only a few moments earlier, I had refreshed myself with a cup of tea.
Since it was the only chair in the whole house, I decided to evacuate to my bedroom upstairs were I could read my book in peace.
Though I shut the door firmly as I entered, the sounds of my brother's most unmannerly smacking still came clearly to my ears.
I picked up my travelling guitar, playing it one last time before I had to sell the prescious thing.
And yet, when times like my current situation arose, I could not help but feel rather foolish at having done so.
Unknowingly, a tear came to my eye- but it wasn't because I had sold almost all of my scarce possessions.
I had often hoped, through the passing of many years, that when my brother and I saw one another face to face again it would be on better terms, never the matter how unlikely such a hope was.
"It's really always been you I wanted," she said softly, a slow and (thought I) rather devious smile parting her lips.
"What do you mean, exactly?" I said, choosing my word carefully as I did and taking one last step backwards.
I grabbed my coat, taking advantage of the lady's distraction and dashed out of my bedroom, heading for the door.
She did not make a move to stop me, only said in a low, humming sort of tone: "It's alright if you run for now; I'll see to you before long."
I shuddered, "make sure you lock up my house when you are done contaminating it with your presence, brother!" I called behind my back.
It seemed to me to take an hour, but it was really only a few minutes later that I entered the small village upon the fringes of which I dwelt.
(Ummmm... Wasn't it night?)
I did not pause for sight-seeing however, but made my way straight to the tavern.
I did not pause for sight-seeing however, but made my way straight to the tavern.
I nodded to myself, having caught the glance of the dark form waiting upon the steps; I had not come to the tavern for a drink.
Getting my wits about me, I bounded up the stairs to the tavern two at a time, knowing this was a very impatient and dangerous man to leave waiting.
He considered my nervous question with a rather smug air, taking no care in my apparent haste, and answered: "Maybe. 'Ave ya got me coin?"
"Depends. Do you have the item I requested?" I said, taking out and jingling all the money I had saved up to buy what I wanted.
A new look crept into his eye, and he hastily produced from somewhere in the folds of his very dirty attire a small bottle filled with an emerald liquid.
I hand him the money, repressing the growing smirk that threatened to show itself before the conclusion of the trade.

Its voice reached me a moment later; a voice like a snake's hiss slithering through mud: "Time to pay up."
The growing fear was a-rising in my chest - I feared my heart would burst upon this creature's words.
