I think the question of who Bast is, is answered in the books. He's a prince in the Fae.

I'd be interested to know though what exactly Bast is and why exactly he aligns himself with a fugitive inn keeper.

We aren't supposed to be answering the questions.... just asking them...

The Question is not who is behind the Doors of Stone, but where they are...

I do what I want.

Its an open forum and the question has an answer.

Either that or its a poorly worded question.

Why would anyone want to make a list of questions that have answers, but not want to know the answers, that makes zero sense. Hence why I mentioned it in the first place. If it was speculation, I wouldnt have said anything, but its plainly written in the book and encouraging ignorance will never be my style.

Asking questions that dont have answers makes plenty of sense and I havent interjected any of my personal theories, but including questions that can otherwise be answered by looking in the book is pointless and leads to confusion. Not to mention degrades the integrity of the list.

With that being said...The Waystone is Newarre.

Where is Newarre? We dont know. That would be an appropriate question.

I refuse to disregard information that is plainly in the book because other people either do not realize the information is available to them, or cannot properly ask a question.

That being said, I do have some questions I'd like to include:

What is the significance of copper to the magic of the world?

What is inside Kvothe's thrice locked chest?

Where are the Lackless Doors?

Why do they exist?

What is the name of the beast that Lanre slays?

Can namers become shapers and vice versa?

Does Kvothe ever score with Denna?

Is Hemme a good character or bad character?

If any of my questions have answers I'd appreciate them being made known to me. No question is stupid, but refusing to accept the answer to a question really is.

Pat recently did an interview in which a couple of these questions were asked, but regarding namers and shapers he only referred us to chapter 102 in WMF, on the War of Creation

Pat made it prett clear in NotW that Kvothe never sees Abenthy again...which is truly a pity

Sanjiv | 429 comments I agree we want to compile a list of 'unanswered questions' to create a quick primer for ourselves before we go into the 3rd book. Questions that have already been answered by the books shouldn't be culled from the list.

I think it'd be neat if Supriy eventually edited his first post with the ongoing list of questions not yet answered. That'd come in handy. It also lets us have tangent discussions in the thread without taking away from the end list.

Supriy wrote: " 1. Who is Bast and what does Reshi mean?"

Or rather, how do Bast and Kvothe know each other? Or where exactly is Bast from? The same Fae that Felurian is from? We really don't know much about Fae, or the what 'demons' really are....Is it useful to break this down into the 20 or 30 unanswered questions that compile it, or can we consider it to be an 'unknown territory.'

...Are we sure it's not "No Where?" Are the books a straight telling of the story, or is it a story itself, and at the end of the third book we'll come a across a note from the fictional author (Chronicler?), discussing how details in the book have been fabricated to protect Kvothe and the town he was in--Now THAT's the questions. It would be fitting for the third book to end in mystery, as Kvothe and Bast set off to journey once again, but where? Chronicler won't say.

---

Amber wrote: "Can namers become shapers and vice versa?"

I believe the answer to this is yes...But you'll have confirm that in Felurian's story, I think. I think the difference between them was one of policy and philosophy, not of ability.

---

Amber wrote: "Is Hemme a good character or bad character?"

You mean a good guy or a bad guy? Or a threat or not a threat? I think the back story behind all the Masters should be on the unanswered list. Then again, with school yard gossip and all that, are the backstories of Sim and the Masters really mysteries, or just stuff not worth mentioning?

---

I want more answers about Yll, and why Denna knows as much as she does about it?

I also want to know why Master Lorren inquired about Kvothe's father by name.

Yep yep! I read the interview from Blog to Tor. It was probably the most awesome thing that happened all week.

EVERYONE SHOULD GO READ IT

Pat even gives a little info he didnt in the books, Like why Lorren approached Kvothe in NOTW about his father.

That being said, havent had a chance to go over chapter 102 again. :(

And since I feel compelled....

Is Denna or Kvothe right about the story of Lanre?

Where are the Amyr?

Why havent they made an appearance in the books yet?

Is the wooden ring Kvothe wears in the poem the ring from Meluan or Auri?

Where were the gaurds (cant remember what they are called) for the Cthae tree when Kvothe spoke with Cthae?

I'm mostly wondering if Hemme is like Snape from Harry Potter.

You know, you hate him all the way through the series then in the end it turns out he's been trying to protect everyone.

And Sanjiv...You must read the interview. LOL.

I know that the only answers that should be here are the ones that are clearly stated in the series, but I couldn't resist on whose version of Lanre's story is the right one, because Kvothe's version came from Skarpi, and I have an unexplainable urge to trust everything that comes out of that man's mouth.

Yah I suck at that too...LOL

I've noticed a lot of people feel that way about Skarpi. I'm not sure why. For some reason I always imagined he looked like a pirate (I have no idea why) so I never trusted his ass.

I know...I'm insane, but thats my reasoning. LOL

A few more questions:

Can Kvothe's age ever be accurately deteremined since he has spent time in the fae?

Are there still shapers in the world like there are still a few namers?

Are any of the university masters versed in shaping?

How does Elodin know what a shaed is?

What is the incidence surrounding the expulsion of Devi? (That might be in the books, but I dont remember it)

What does Auri's name really mean?

message 19: by Cookie (new)

Cookie (cookieleib) | 35 comments If you've read Christopher Paolini's Eragon series, you'll know about the True Language (or Old Tongue, whatever I haven't read it in a while). Basically, by saying the name of something in the Old Tongue one could control and shape it because that is the name of that object in its truest form. So when Kvothe tells Elodin that Auri means "light" but can't say what language it's from, that's the idea that came to me. That Auri, or any "name" for that matter, is a word that encompasses the true nature of something, which is why one must understand something fully to name it.

Namers and shapers are the same. They use their skills in naming for different ends
