Yes! This is one of my top 5 favorite books. I first picked it up in high school when I was looking for a boring book to put me to sleep. I probably got about 3 hours of sleep that night. Took the book to school with me the next day and finished it halfway through my morning classes. I really couldn't put it down. I have reread it several times since. What a great story!

Tried to read the black tulip but that one was quite boring.
I tried reading The Black Tulip once. I do not recall getting very far with it. Maybe someday I'll try again. I have enjoyed the Three Musketeers books immensely though. Have you ever read anything by Dorothy Dunnett? I have heard that she writes as good a sword fight as Dumas did. I have not yet read any of her works, but plan to soon.

I wouldn't bother with The Black Tulip. I got over halfway and was still bored. Plus I couln't find any research on it. The majority of my paper was on Monte Cristo.
Never heard of her but I'll look her up.
I love this book. I do have to say (please don't hate me, I promise this isn't usually the case :D) I liked the movie more. But I saw the movie first. I just love what the writers and directors did with the movie, even though only parts stayed true to the book. Has anyone else seen it?

They should have given the movie a different title and just say that it was based off of the novel. I liked the cast. They were good actors but the story wasn't loyal to the book.

I participated in a buddy read of this - listened to an audio version: 52 hours, I believe. Still, read by Bill Homewood, I enjoyed it - not one of my favorite books in the universe, but lots of fun.

The Jim Caviezel version then, I guess. They changed a lot in that one ... I want to give the 1999 version with Gérard Depardieu a try soon.

I have seen the French mini series with Gerard Depardieu. It is enjoyable (Depardieu is my favorite actor) but not really any more faithful to the book than the Caviezel version. The first part of the book up until Edmund escapes from prison is so condensed I felt cheated. Movies are just never as good as the book.
