I finally finished A Discovery of Witches.
The attention to history and literature in this book felt very convincing in the story and it was easily the most delicious aspect of this book for me. The protagonist's academic passion for the past was very contagious, and that powered me through the first half of the book.
Out of this world? Well that is obvious here. The witches were enough. Add to that the vampires, daemons, ghosts and a potpourri of supernatural powers and you've got yourself a buffet. For me the supernatural elements started to feel heavy-handed, especially around the middle and towards the end, but I wanted so badly to know the ending I kept going.
I would call this one a guilty pleasure that picks you up from the beginning and takes you through at a fast pace. When the momentum moves this fast there is not much time to stop and savor character development or emotional build-up, you just sort of float away on a current of action and either you buy in or you don't.
The ending felt like a cliffhanger to me, so that was unsatisfying, but it was juicy enough to leave me wondering.

I just finished the book and I really liked it. It was a real page turner and I couldn't put it down. I just noticed it is a trilogy so of course I'll have to read the next two. I think the thing that seemed most out of this world was the way the creatures became so easy going with each other. It seems if these creatures have kept separate from each other for all of time that they would not fall so easily into liking each other and becoming a group.
I liked the way when there was conflict in the book it didn't drag on for 100 pages. The bad stuff wrapped up pretty quickly which made me happy.
I thought the funniest part was when the house reacted to people such as spitting out items that it knew someone needed at the moment and creating new rooms when it knew there were visitors coming. The house cracked me up.
I don't know what part seemed real. It was all pretty out of this world:)

Tracy, I'm excited that you read it. And glad you enjoyed it.
The haunted house was a fun surprise. I can totally see how you could get sucked into the next one in the series, especially after that ending.

Kana, thank you for adding your thoughts. There were plenty of mixed reviews on this one.
