PM (personalmiracle) | 242 comments So, being the Bill-lover I am, I just finished Chapter 13 and I need to talk. I'll be done with the book by the end of the day and I'd love to hear what everyone thinks. Any thoughts about what happened in this book and where the next and supposedly last book is going to go? I'll check back and chime in when I am done reading. Can't wait to hear everyone's take.

PM (personalmiracle) | 242 comments WELL!

So...do we think Sookie will end up with Sam now???
(Great book this time, don't you think? Not a place-holder like the last few.)

Sillylittlefishey | 1025 comments Being an Eric fan (that's me an him in my avatar afterall) I really didn't like this one. He was pretty much non-exsistant and when he was there he didn't seem like he wanted to be. Also, I hated that it looks like Sook is going to end up with Sam. I didn't like it in the beginning of the series when he was all hot for her and I don't like it any better now.

And on a side note...I thought that was the most boring strip club scene---ever!!

I hope Harris finishes with a bang on the last one, but I'm not too optimistic. This book made me feel like she really wasn't into this one and was just trying to finish her obligation for 13 books.

PM (personalmiracle) | 242 comments I do see it so differently. I felt like for the first time in many years/books, Bill was back and I had missed him. I felt like the last two books were just nothing happening and this one so much changes - Eric's gone, Claude's duplicity is revealed, and she seemed to be setting up possible happy endings with Sookie's musings. I did notice HArris reminded us about Hunter, I still think he could be a big part Sookies' happily ever after, although having seen how this one ended, I am pretty sure the HEA will center around Sookie and Sam. She still sort of left the possibly of Bill coming back as Sookie's love interest, but I think she is toying with us Bill-lovers with that hope.

Eric did seen really cold and missing in this one and really if you looked at their relationship only by this book, they did not seem like a very good match. I love that interaction between Sookie, Eric, Bill and Pam on her birthday.

I have a question, if Sookie was gifted at birth by her "Godfather" with the ability to read minds and Barry got it from being his blood relative, how did Hunter get it? That may have been explained along the way but I have forgotten the explanation.

Brenda I really enjoyed this book, but have to agree with Heidi I missed Eric, and didn't like where their relationship was headed, it seemed more as a farewell to Eric. I suppose since the series started with Bill maybe it will end with Bill, because in almost every instance Bill was with Sookie he kept reminding her of his undying love for her.

PM (personalmiracle) | 242 comments FYI -"Charlaine Harris just posted on her Facebook page that the release date for the 13th and final Sookie Stackhouse novel, Dead Ever After, is May 7, 2013."

message 7: by PM (new)

PM (personalmiracle) | 242 comments I think it looks more like Sam than Bill. Sookie is part owner of the bar now, Sam is free (and as he pointed out, 2 girlfriends of his believed he was involved with Sookie romantically so maybe he gives off that vibe) and Sookie is free. Happy couple with their own business. I think the section to examine for clues would be Sookie's thoughts about what a "Happily Ever After" would be for everyone.

Her gift was from the fae side of her heritage (from her real grandfather) which is how Hunter got it, from his mom Hailey (Sookie's cousin). They both have fae in them but it seems that the gifts they got don't go to every person with the blood in them.

I haven't read this one yet. I want to but all the bad reviews and the long date until the next one make me leery about starting it. I was so disappointed with the last one I don't want that to happen again with this one.

message 9: by PM (new)

PM (personalmiracle) | 242 comments Ok I see my mistake. For some reason I thought that, as Sookie's sponsor, he gave it to her as her gift when she was born but I see this:

"...he is Sookie's “sponsor”, and responsible for the telepathic ability in the Stackhouse line: as a baby gift to his close friend Fintan, Sookie's fairy biological grandfather, he gave a thimbleful of his blood to both Adele and Fintan. This allowed descendants of the couple with an “essential spark” (an openness to the other world) to have telepathy."

MPL--I liked this book a lot. There are parts I read over a few times for the pure joy of having them happen again. I would like to explain to you why I would like it and others would not but since you haven't read the book, I'll keep my mouth shut so I don't spoil you. LOL

Mlpmom (Book Reviewer) (mlpmombookreviewer) | 839 comments Thanks for the quote PM, I couldn't quite remember all the details!

I will read it here soon, I think my curiosity is getting the better of me and I will have to start it soon, then we can talk about it. :)

Jennifer | 429 comments I haven't read it yet, but as someone who has firmly been Team Sam (well, in the books anyway. In the show I'm Team Eric because. Well. Look. At. Him.) I am excited about the possibility of Sookie ending up with Sam. I can't wait to read this one!

Stephanie (shorton0219) | 10 comments I am an Eric lover as well and really do not want to see Sookie with Bill or Sam. If its not going to be Eric, I hope its someone new. I'd rather see her with Alcide rather than Sam or Bill.

message 13: by PM (new)

PM (personalmiracle) | 242 comments MLP DON"T READ THIS! LOL
I heard that Harris has said there will be no new characters so it won't be someone totally new I guess. I was starting to wonder about Dermot but he is gone. Quinn could be back in now though but I doubt that one.
If you forget the show, I think you have to admit, other than when he lost his memory and counting this book, Eric has not been that good to Sookie. And Sookie has been,IMO, too willing to overlook Eric's flaws and mistreatments of her. Maybe because he is so pretty and good in bed, she seems to just take whatever he dished out. I think she may have finally admitted this to herself when she comments on her birthday "Are you going to tell me you love me just as much as Bill but in a more practical way, while finding some way to subtly threaten me..." JUST as much as Bill? Threaten? If he doesn't love her more than Bill, and Bill "betrayed" her (I still think we don't know all of the truth on the causes of that event), then Eric is equally likely to betray her, no?
I think Bill came out lookin' pretty darn good in this book. Why was Sookie so interested in his fantasy? She asked him for details of it 3 times. I'm not saying she will end up with him, but I think people have to start to see he really loves her and that the betrayal was out of character.
Still, I'm thinking it will be Sam in the end.

Cmkage | 231 comments I was always afraid Sookie would end up with Sam and after reading Deadlocked, it certainly seems to be going that way. I always thought they would be better off as friends, but oh well. As long as she doesn't end up with Bill, I'm good.

Generally speaking, I thought Deadlocked did a good job setting up a finale of the series. As much as I have enjoyed the Sookie books, I'm also glad the series is coming to an end.

Amy | 7 comments i personally hope that sookie and sam get together, he has always been great for her and you know he really loves her... im not gonna be happy when this series ends, i love my sookie books :)

Desperado (lethallovely) | 453 comments I'm halfway through Deadlocked and I can already see that Harris might be setting the stage for Sookie/Sam (especially with this "I want a baby" crap)....& I am NOT happy. I love me some Eric. I love his sardonic, dark sense of humor and his ruthlessness. Yes, he's been acting like a punk bitch for the last few books (very reminiscent of Amnesia Eric in Dead to the World, which I did NOT like) but I'm hoping he'll redeem himself. And if he doesn't? I still don't want Sookie with Sam...or Bill for that matter. Anyone but those two. Quinn! Alcide! FREAKING CALVIN NORRIS! (Or whatever his name is.)

Why? Because Bill is a cheating asshole betrayer who seduced Sookie because his maker made him. Enough said. And Sam? He's EXTREMELY beta male. He's so stupidly gullible, especially with this Jannalynn crap-& most of his other relationships for that matter. I feel like if Sookie ends up with him, she's gonna spend the rest of her life saving Sam from himself. Yeah, the vamps are cold and ruthless and keep secrets and vampy politics overload-but if Sookie needs someone to kick ass and take names, who you gonna call? Sam? NOOOO. VAMPBUSTERS!

Sillylittlefishey | 1025 comments LethalLovely~Don't Go Screaming If I Blow You With wrote: "Why? Because Bill is a cheating asshole betrayer who seduced Sookie because his maker made him. "

I was wondering when somebody was going to remember how Bill treated Sookie when they were together! (But wasn't it the Queen that made him seduce her or am I mis-remembering?)I'm sorry Bill fans, but I just never liked him and always felt like he was just trying to get in her pants. Eric was to, but at least he admitted it:) Plus he did love her and you could tell up until the last two books now his personality has completely changed. I will admit that Bill has been better in later books, but not enough for me to want her with him. I don't see how Harris can build up that relationship between Sookie and Eric just to dump it at the end and make her HEA with someone else.

message 21: by PM (new)

PM (personalmiracle) | 242 comments LethalLovely, I agree with everything except this "Bill is a cheating asshole betrayer who seduced Sookie because his maker made him. "
I think your insight into Sam's personality is bang on. I never thought of it like that but you are SO right. That may be why I never liked Sam for Sookie but I could never figure out exactly why.
Now, back to my defense of Bill. Remember, when he agreed to (or more probably was ordered to,) seduce Sookie, he did not know her yet. He obviously did fall in love with her once he got to know her. I admit I cannot figure out why he was ignoring her when he stated developing the data base, but he had no choice in the Lorena affair. It really isn't cheating if you are forced, is it? AND I do believe Eric had a hand in setting it in motion. Lorena didn't bother with Bill for years and then she suddenly wanted him? I see Eric's hand in this. It was too convenient for Eric who had been looking for a way to turn Sookie against Bill and he is so good at controlling events around. This has always been my contention, that Bill paid the price for something he could not have stopped. For some reason he never got to fully explain the events to Sookie and Eric was the big beneficiary of it all. Bill has ever since then tried to get Sookie to give him a chance and he has shown again and again that he truly loves her, so for him to voluntarily cheat with Lorena just never added up.

Desperado (lethallovely) | 453 comments @ Heidi: You may be right about the Queen forcing Bill to seduce Sookie. It's been so long since I read that book but I know it was either her or Lorena. Either way, it was NOT organic how they met. If it wasn't bad enough he cheated, then we find out he wasn't with her in the beginning because he liked her. The bitchslap heard across Sookieverse. OUCH. And I totally a gree; Bill is better in the latest books but I don't want Sookie with him.

@ PM: I get what you're saying about Bill. That being said, it's not gonna happen for me. I've been reading this series since I was 14 and even young and dumb I knew that cheating was unforgivable to me. I haven't liked Bill since "Club Dead" & ain't ever gonna like him. Maybe he was forced to have sex with Lorena. Maybe he wasn't. Maybe Eric had a hand in it. Maybe he didn't. The fact remains that he kept all of this important crap from Sookie and he had sex with another woman. The "Yeah, XXX made me seduce you" is something I'd be able to forgive if he was appropriately groveling and sobbing but in my book, there isn't anything you can do to redeem yourself from having your penis inside another woman.

ETA: Also, I can't remember if this is the way it works or not but if a Maker says you have to do something, are you actually compelled to do it? Like you just can't NOT do it? Because if a Maker doesn't have that power, Bill sure as hell could've done something to keep himself from having sex with Lorena-if he was forced. Either way, I still HATE HIM WITH HATRED!

Desperado (lethallovely) | 453 comments BTW, I apologize for being all ranty. If I sound bitter, it's because I am a little. Harris has killed this series for me and I am SO ready for this capsizing ship to finally freaking sink.

message 24: by PM (new)

PM (personalmiracle) | 242 comments Yes, I do believe if a maker tells you to do something you simply must to do it. Remember Eric is claiming that for his excuse now and Sookie says she would buy it except that his maker is now dead so he should be able to weasel out of it. But you are right, Bill could have told Sookie it was happening. Big bad on his part.

See for me, this last book has restored the series. I was at the point you are for the last several books. I am where you are for my once-beloved Anita Blake series so I "feel your pain". LOL

Desperado (lethallovely) | 453 comments Thanks, PM.

Ah, yes. Good old Homicidal Slut with a Gun (aka Anita Blake). I quit that series after Flirt, which was around 10 books too late. The biggest reason I have kept with this series and given up on others (like AB) is because, unlike AB, there is an end in sight. I've spent 8 years, lots of money and lots of time with The Southern Vampire Mysteries. I'm not about to punk out this close to the end.

Sophie (sophie714) | 126 comments I am guessing that she will end up with Sam in the end as she has always wanted children and to grow old with the person she loves and Sam seems to be the only one that can really provide that to her. I love Eric and am sad to see him go but at the same time I was getting quite annoyed how Harris changed him from being the fun-loving, yet power-hungry vamp that we love to a stressed out, absent partner with Sookie. I would be disappointed if Sookie got back with Bill as despite his love for her I ways felt he was far too serious and a kill-joy to be with Sookie... I think that Quinn will make an appearance in the last book as well as Alcide (and no doubt play for her affections) but I think that Harris ha put too much 'water under the bridge' for these characters to really have a running shot at being the final Beau... Sam is my bet...

Michelle Tempted By Books (michelletemptedbybooks) | 195 comments I HATE BILL COMPTON! I will never forgive him for doing that to Sookie!
That's all I have to say.

message 28: by C.M. (new) - rated it 2 stars

C.M. Rawdon (cmrawdon) | 6 comments Sam is definitely my bet for Sookie's HEA. I don't like it but c'est la vie. I didn't enjoy this book at all. I was bored through a lot of it, especially the strip club scene. The last few books have been a little off IMO. I am Team Eric but at this point I am so tired of Sookie's inner turmoil, I'd be happy to see her end up with anyone, except Sam. I just don't think they are believable as a couple.

I will see this series through and read the final book, but I am afraid my heart will be broken at the end lol

Stacie H. (staciemh) | 75 comments I still think that Sookie will end up with no guy at the end. Bill and Sam will continue to be Sookie's friends (hey, first book Sam had his chance but they were better as friends then and now). Eric will marry Freyda because he can't say no to the power in the end. Plus, Sookie will eventually wither up and die and the vamps will stay the same - not a good way to maintain a relationship. Alcide is just creepy and will end up with some werewolf like Kandace to show a strong alpha couple. Quinn will probably show back up in the last book, but as an acquaintance friend because Sookie is over him (her noncommital response to his request to see her). The HEAs in the next book are for everyone else as Sookie was imagining in this book - Jason and Michelle, Danny and Kennedy, Halleigh and Andy, etc.

More plausible going by this book than other threads been reading. I really hated how pretty absent all the guys were in this book although I guess is a plot device for author to obscure what will happen. It just made for odd book and none of the guys stayed true to character except maybe Bubba.

A.C. Warneke (forsakened) | 45 comments I really liked Alcide in the book where he first appeared but in the next book I really did NOT like him - he wasn't the same and has remained just kind of douche-y. I admit that I haven't read past ? I can't even remember which one - the one with the fairies torturing Sookie. I have LOVED Eric from the beginning - I love the dark humor and just plain old sexiness - add in Alexander Skaarsgard's portrayal and, swoon! I don't want to see him turn into a one-dimensional character.

As far as what will happen with Sookie? At this point, she needs to take a sabbatical and find out where she's at. After everything she has gone through she needs to take a step back and figure out who she is.

I do NOT want her to end up with Sam... As has been stated earlier, he's so beta. If it can't be Eric, then it has to be someone new because all of the men that have been in her life have not been very good for her.

PM (personalmiracle) | 242 comments Stacie said:"I still think that Sookie will end up with no guy at the end. Bill and Sam will continue to be Sookie's friends"

Yeh, that is pretty much how I think it will end too, with Sookie standing on her own, a modern independent woman who needs no man/were/vampire for her HEA. Sad, kinda'.
You grow to love characters like these over the years and care what happens to them. You can see the strong feelings we have for them by what we are writing here.
PS...I'm still betting on Hunter being in Sookie's HEA.
PSS...I did like this book.

I'm right there with you...It's been so long since I read the book that was revealed in that I'm not 100% sure if it was the Queen or Lorena, but I know it was one of them. Plus I get mixed up with True Blood to now.

I feel the same way...

Stacie H. (staciemh) | 75 comments PM wrote: "PS...I'm still betting on Hunter being in Sookie's HEA"

I agree with you, PM. I think that the demon sponsor will do as he said he would in this book and give Sookie guidance to control the telepathy, and I think that in turn Sookie will sponsor and teach Hunter. Plus, he's family, and Sookie seems big on family.

Julie | 51 comments I was always for Eric but it doesn't seem to be going that way. At this point I'm fine with however it goes as long as Sookie's happy in the end. It seems like she is getting more and more tired of all the supernatural stuff, so Sam would be a way for her to try to have something somewhat normal.

I guess I am hoping Harris has some trick up her sleeve.

You're right. There kind of would be no point for the entire series if she would just end up with Sam. That could have happened without all the vampires, werewolves, fae etc ever entering Sookie's life. I'd definitely be disappointed.

Carrie Marshall (sweett588) | 20 comments It will be VERY anti-climatic if Sookie ends up with Sam, which Deadlock seems to point to. I was disappointed with the direction it took. I am an Eric fan, and it doesn't look good for Eric or Bill. Bringing in someone new for 1 book would be ridiculous. I just hope something exciting happens in the last book- because Deadlocked was dead-boring!

PM (personalmiracle) | 242 comments (Anti-climatic. I knew it didn't look right how I spelled it but I was too lazy to look it up. Anyhow...)

I have heard that Ms. Harris has stated there will be no new person brought in to be a love interest for Sookie.
I did not think Deadlock was boring at all but then I don't like Eric and DO like Bill. I think that is what make the difference in how you felt about the book.

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 407 comments Okay I have just finished Deadlocked and am so glad that this series is coming to an end. I just don't feel the magic of the earlier books. I found it quite slow although I did enjoy the final chapters and think it does pose an interesting set up for the final book. I have to stand by what I have thought about the ending though, it will be with Sam or Sookie will be alone. As Charlaine Harris says these books are not romances primarily so this could well be what happens.

message 47: by [deleted user] (new)

What do you think the significance is of Sookie making out her will?

message 48: by PM (last edited Jun 12, 2012 09:13PM) (new)

PM (personalmiracle) | 242 comments Hmmm good question. That does seem like a significant move.
The name of the last book is Dead Ever After. Are we sure Sookie isn't going to become a vamp? I thought Charlaine said that somewhere?

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 407 comments PM: I think CH said Sookie will never become a vamp actually so that narrows the possiblities of how it will all turn out doesn't it?

message 50: by PM (new)

PM (personalmiracle) | 242 comments That was what I thought. What would a will provide then, unless the point of the will in Deadlocked was simply to show she was afraid for her life. I can't quite remember the situation she faced when she had it done.
