As I'm not remotely technically competent, I wondered if any of you chaps knew whether it was possible to place a book on Kindle for pre-order purposes, or is that just for 'proper' authors?

From other conversations in here, I think it's just for ...nope, won't call them 'proper' authors. All our authors are proper authors.Might be worth asking amazon about it though.
I've only ever seen it done if it's published properly. Nowt to do with the author, more so the method of publication. :D

There is no way in the KDP process for a self-publisher to offer pre-order. I suppose that Amazon want to make sure that there is actually a product to offer.
