Right now, I'm having a little trouble with this book.

It feels like it's dragging on. I'm just at the (view spoiler) but the story just isn't progressing much for me.

And the sex is totally lame tame. Amirite??

Also, if I hear Chaz talk about "sending rainbows" one more time, I may puke. I've made a lot of notes on this book, I'm going to save them for the show I think.

Jane Higginson | 180 comments Im about halfway through, the sex is tame compared to in the Iron Duke lol, also yes having an issue with her constantly using the rainbow term, when she was first learning about ren being a blind empath the rainbow term was fitting but now she's using it all the time im finding it highly annoying and yep a little gag worthy!!

Cláudia (readingsomewhere) | 16 comments I've finished a few days ago and I liked it, but I'm not used to reading sci-fi, so it was new to me and I liked it. BUT, I really loved the alt book. That was better. I think the major problem with Gabriel's Ghost is being very repetitive.

yep same here i dont think i can finish this...its seriously the worst book i have read in a while. not because the writting (i like space) but its dragging on and on and on! and i kind of like ren more than sully.....just saying...

Arrika Arrachne | 30 comments I'm enjoying the alt book - reading everyones notes on Gabes Ghost makes so happy that I opted to read it instead - the mention of it being similar in feel to Serenity was spot on !

Sara (medusasmirror) | 34 comments I'm only on chapter 4. I'm listening to it on audio and I'm having trouble getting into it. but it's early days yet.

Brian (bthomsen) | 9 comments Have to agree, just getting to chapter 4 and bla. Should have picked Accidental Goddess by this author, much better story.

This.

And it kind of bothered me how (view spoiler). I finally finished it, don't think I'm going to continue the rest of the series.

I started Grimspace, however, and it is much better. I keep getting this mental mash up of Firefly and Mass Effect with a dash of Farscape.

Kind of shipping Jax/Dina though... even though it'll never happen.

Melinda (mwood) | 1 comments I wasn't able to get a hold of these books, and I'm currently into Hyperion for S&L, so that's taking my time. Maybe I'm not missing much.. ? ;)

message 10: by Tricia (new)

Tricia (triciamonster) | 3 comments UGH yes! I finish a chapter and get bored and put it down. Then try again in 30 min, get bored, put it down. I want to like it but just have no connection to the characters or the plot. It reminds me of some weird Canadian or British serialized space TV show you might see on Sci-Fi at 2 in the morning that you only watch because the main character has big taa-taas. Except its not as sexy as that.

message 11: by Jane (new) - rated it 3 stars

Jane Higginson | 180 comments @danielle ooooh your description of grimspace makes me wanna lem gabriels ghost and go onto that! I love firefly farscape and mass effect!

Seawood Oh, I am so bummed that Grimspace isn't available for Kindle in the UK :(

Gabriel's Ghost does seem to stall in the middle but it picks up towards the end. It becomes more of a basic con than sci-fi, though - made me think of things like Leverage, anyone ese get that?

Cupcakencorset | 10 comments Haven't started yet. Sigh.

message 14: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn Lancashire (klancashire) | 21 comments UGH yes. I like how she turned "sending rainbows" into a skill, like she's learned to magically project full sentences of thoughts and feelings with her emotions. It's the ultimate in fantasy and one that gets a lot of us into trouble. YOUR PARTNER CAN'T READ YOUR MIND. Even with a few fuzzy impressions of your emotional state.

Kristen (kgreene978) | 16 comments I really want to like the book, because I like the world and the idea of it, but I find myself trying to plow through it just to get it finished and be able to move on to something else.

I'm so tired of the single word sentences, over and over and over.

Megan (megsimanic) | 23 comments It's not only the sending rainbows but the repeat of obsidian eyes for me. I get what his eyes are, they really don't need to say it that much.

And the sex scenes well...just very very tame compared to others I've read lately.

message 17: by Amanda (last edited May 15, 2012 03:11AM) (new) - rated it 1 star

Amanda (ladycello) I just finished this book, and thus far it's been my least favorite pick. The character of Chaz interested me at first, but then her development didn't go where I had hoped. Sully didn't really pull me in, and though not overtly "rapey", I wasn't a fan of what other characters called "mind-f$&*ing", which he still seemed to do through the rest of the book despite telling her he would never do it again. He was too alpha for me, and I really disliked the idea of Chaz allowing him to remain in her mind... She became too submissive for my liking. I also had higher hopes for Ren as a good secondary character, but I felt like his importance to the story faded in the last few chapters.

I also agree with other posters here with regards to the sex: lame, and when it did happen there wasn't enough build-up to it. Kind of a "wham, bam, thank you M'am"... with rainbows.

Overall, when I got halfway through I had to force myself to finish it so I could move on to the next book. I'm seeing much more positive comments about Grimspace, especially with the Firefly comparisons I see mentioned.

So for those still halfway and struggling, I wish you best of luck in finishing it!

Kristen (aubi) | 13 comments I really liked it at first. But then i think I lost interest in the characters. It might be because I started reading The Magicians and I am loving it. I will finish but it's been rough.

AnnaBanana Pascone (snapdragnful) | 89 comments I had a hard time from 13% and it has taken me days to get to 30%. Normally I would read a book that size in one sitting, so my percentage is pretty telling. The only character who is even remotely interesting is Ren. Sully is a douche from the beginning and has done nothing so far to redeem himself, and Chaz can't make up her mind. With her supposed personality type, I keep waiting for her to tell Sully to go screw if he doesn't give her the details, but...she just accepts whatever scraps he throws her way and tries to impress him. Blech. Honestly, so far the book would have been more engaging if they had just taken the romance out of it all together.

Adriene I almost ALWAYS finish books, even bad ones. But I think this might end up as the 2nd book ever that I haven't finished once I started reading it. I am kind of interested in checking out the alternate book after reading comments.

Raquel (ubergeekygirl) | 19 comments I read Grimspace first and really enjoyed it. I feel the stories are very similar just the pacing is different. Gabriel's Ghost does drag and the sex is short and not very hot. I could see being attracted to Sully but Chaz is boring me. I also agree with the rest of the comments regarding the rainbows. *sigh* let's hope the next book's sex scenes gets us blushing at least! Come on Felicia we know you've got some dirty books you wanna recommend!

Jes (tiaama) | 110 comments LadyCello wrote: "Kind of a "wham, bam, thank you M'am"... with rainbows...."

Lol... that made me choke on my coffee! I know the sex scenes are way tamer than what we have been reading, but I actually thought some of them were creative.
One word sentences can get annoying, but it seemed as though Sinclair was writing the sex scenes as poetry. When I thought of it that way it was easier to appreciate.
I suspect I may re-read this one down the road, and if I do the sex scenes may go the way of Tom Bombadil in the LOTR. SKIP! They just don`t add a lot to the book other than confirmation that they are doing it now...

AnnaBanana Pascone (snapdragnful) | 89 comments I know this is a Vaginal Fantasy book club, but...I skipped the sex scenes.

Agreed Felicia... I was really bored and kinda just slugging through it so I could actually say I'd finished the book (unlink Iron Duke/Soulless) - but the last 1/3 of it was really great and made up for the rest of it enough to make me want to read the sequel.

AnnaBanana Pascone (snapdragnful) | 89 comments I've made it to the 75% mark, and the story is definitely better. Sully's eyes were actually called "dark" instead of "obsidian" at one point. Turns out it is an excellent "nurse your hangover" book. I'm going to try to finish it tonight.

I guess I'm weird I sorta enjoyed the 1st third and it DRAGGED until about the last 3rd.

message 29: by Adelaide (new)

Adelaide Blair I dislike both books this month. I don't know why, but I could not get into either of them. Lemmed.

Kelly Silva (kellysilva) | 9 comments I managed to finish the book, but boy did I want to lem it! It was boring, and the sex scenes were lame. Didn't even really know what was going on in the sex scenes. I came into this book after reading the Fifty Shades trilogy, and I think I was definitely expecting more out of the sex scenes. At least I gave it a good ol' try, and finished reading it. I'm hoping next month's book is more interesting and has sex scenes more like Iron Duke.

jillz (jillzz) RE:rainbows & obsidian eyes

I was also thoroughly sick of these two words by about half way through. Out of curiosity, I searched for how many times they are used.

Rainbow or rainbows was used 35 times. On average, every 12 pages in the book.

Obsidian was used 28 times, mostly in conjunction with the word eyes. Occasionally, the author changed it up a bit and used it in conjunction with the word gaze instead. This works out to every 15 or so pages.

Angel is used 52 times in the book. About 2/3 of the time, Sully is calling Chaz "angel" The rest of the time, it is reference to the angel of heart-stars suit in the playing card deck. The word angel shows up approximately every 8 pages!

PointyEars42 | 476 comments If anyone actually does want to trudge through it before Monday, try getting the audio version.

I'd given up at chapter 12/13 but someone took pity on me & got me the version I didn't have to actively participate in. The repetitive words stand out far more, but after a while you'll be so caught up in trying to get past the reader's on-again-off-again quasi-Brit accent for Sully that you'll probably finish it in one sitting, laughing your ass off instead of hurling your e-reader out the window.

Patricia Jillz the brave one! This cracked me up

jillz (jillzz) I didn't actually count them up. I used the search function on my Kindle and it tells you how many times your word or phrase appears. I would not do it if I had a paper book!

PointyEars42 | 476 comments jillz wrote: "I was also thoroughly sick of these two words by about half way through. Out of curiosity, I searched for how many times they are used..."

And don't forget "hush" being used 20+ times. I wish the author had used a more honest "shut up" because, let’s face it, he uses the gentler “hush” every time she wants to voice an opinion or feeling.

message 40: by Emma (new) - rated it 3 stars

Emma (dvdemm) | 5 comments I get the feeling the author drank a whole lot of tea whilst writing this. Its mention a LOT.

I'm on Chapter 14 I think, and the "rainbow(s)" and "obsidian eyes" things aren't bothering me that much. "Hush" however, is really getting on my nerves, for as you say, it's mostly used by Sully to keep Chaz from objecting or voicing an opinion to anything.

So far, I'm also with the "Sully is a creep" crowd, cause I'm just not seeing anything very redeeming about him so far. He's a total jerk to Chaz most of the time. I can't believe how forgiving she's being about all his a-hole stunts...it doesn't really seem to be in character for her to just take s**t from someone like she's taking it from Sully. Maybe he'll redeem himself eventually, though from the few bits of things I've read about what others are saying, I doubt it.

Hopefully I'll manage to finish by Monday.

Arrika Arrachne | 30 comments It sounds like a Vaginal Fantasy Flash Mob in the making. A flash mob could be activated easily if they were all listening to the audiobook on headphones in public.
( Every time they hear Angel they flap their wings, hush they holler at the people next to them to stop and hush up.... Rainbows they could sing somewhere over the rainow... Obsidian...?)

It couldn't work as a drinking game Asti sounds like everyone would be far too drunk far too fast.

Seawood Jemma, you can get Grimspace on Kindle if you switch your location to the US to buy it. You can switch right back again, I've never had any trouble. It's worth the small hassle.

I love these stats!

I so badly wanted her to start calling the rainbows auras - rainbows seemed so out of place for someone that was practically born and raised on a space station. How many rainbows has Chaz even seen in her life?

My other pet peeve is "wicked Sully grin." I've actually really enjoyed the book (everyone seems to complain it dragged at the beginning, but I was immediately drawn in), but her use of repetitive phrases when it comes to Sully makes me want to do shots to dull the pain.

As for the sex scenes...I dunno. Some books work better with tamer sex scenes. I don't think she set out to write smut, just romantic adventure. So if the sex scenes were suddenly smutty it would feel out of place to me. For me, a book with smutty sex scenes should lead up to then. You anticipate them, because in nonsexual encounters the characters will think more explicit things like, "His piercing gaze sends shivers down my spine, and a rush of heat to my girly bits" (not verbatim, obviously, but you get the point).

If it's romantic, but not necessarily smutty, the piercing gaze with have a heart-racing effect, but it won't necessarily be explicitly sexualized. The tension is there, but not in a bow-chicka-wow-wow sense. That's the feel I get from Chaz and Sully. Sexual, but not porny, making smutty scenes feel awkward and put there to sell books.

Kelly Weddle (w3dd1e) | 3 comments No one is reading this book now but I FINALLY finished it. Took me two months. I couldn't get past 64% for a long time. I just kept reading the same bits over and over again, yet, my thoughts would drift. I'd find that I'd flipped through pages. I was going through the motions. Haha. I pretty much forced myself to finish it. I just couldn't leave a book partially read.

Also, enough with the "You are mine."
