Insurgent question

I find the whole Edith Prior situation very perplexing...Everyone is seeming to think that she is related to Tris, and that was my first impression as well...but the more I think about it, the more I am left wondering.

What we know:

1. Tris is supposedly 2nd generation - according to the scan at Erudite. Making her parents 1st generation, her grandparents "originals."
2. Her mother was Dauntless.
3. Her father was Erudite.
4. Edith was an original.
5. In Abnegation, when a couple is married, they can take either person's last name OR a NEW last name...

Okay...so here is why I question Tris being actually related...

We know that Amanda Ritter assumes the identity of Edith Prior. We don't know which faction she joins, but I am leaning towards her being an Abnegation - simply due to her first name.

Marcus complains to Tris and Christina when they are in the truck at the Amity compound that "Joshua is not an Abnegation name". So certain names are more accepted in certain factions. Abnegation would seem to have more old fashioned names: i.e. Beatrice/Caleb/Tobias etc... I don't see anyone in Dauntless taking on the name Edith, so i doubt she is Natalie's mother...she may Erudite, but I want to think she's Abnegation - as they were the one's entrusted with the knowledge...

Veronica Roth is too good to have a gaping plot hole, so I'm sure everything will wrap up as it's supposed to, but I think there is going to be a big twist and that Edith Prior might not be exactly who we think she is...

I believe your assumption that "2nd generation" refers to generations held eithin the Chicago-compound is incorrect...I believe it refers to Tris being a 2nd gen Divergent-we know Tris' mom is/ was a Divergent ( her mom sent her to Abneggation to protect and hide her) and Jeanine's whole life's eork was to ID and control the Divergent so it is not beyond belief that she had developed a data base of all known or suspected Divergents.

I think that Jeanine is Andrew's brother, and Tris's aunt. That's why Tris says that Jeanine looks like her.

It would make sense, because Andrew came from Erudite, and so did Jeanine. And maybe when Jeanine turned "evil," Andrew couldn't stand her and changed to Abnegation.

That's why Andrew hates the Erudite so much, because they corrupted his sister.

If that was true, Edith Prior could be Andrew and Jeanine's mother or grandmother, or even great-grandmother.

Natalie said that her mom wanted her to choose something safer than dauntless. Natalie can't be Edith. Also, it was mentioned somewhere in the series that dauntless had changed from what it first was meant to be. So tris's grandmother on her mother's side possibly couldn't be Edith because it must of taken a while for dauntless to change into being not safe. And Edith was a young adult in the video.
Also when tris was called second generation, I think that might mean second generation being anything involved with abnegation.

I Think that Edith Prior is Tris's grandmother or great grandmother - Just related to Tris somehow.

I have no idea, but she's either related to Tris or maybe she's relatedf to Jeanine Matthews and is angry that she died...or something like that.

If Edith was Tris' aunt then she would have still been in the Erudite compound somewhere at some point. She would have been young enough for those to be watching to know her and be like, "Oh hey, that's Edith!" to at least establish if she were still alive or dead. So that rules out her being anything younger than a grandmother.

I still don't get WHAT is happening outside of the gate that freaked Caleb out so bad. I get that they rewrote their lives, but if there was something out there to get them, wouldn't have someone entered through the gate and destroyed the factions already?

All I know is that I reckon Edith Prior is Tris' grandmother because as previously stated, Tris is 'second generation' and this would make edith part of the original generation. Tris would probably remember her mum if it was her but we are all forgeting.......genes! She would recognise the smile or some facial features from her mother.
I highly doubt that Roth would make it so that they weren't related otherwise it would make it entirely useless to put it in.
As to that fact that jeanine went to so much trouble to hide the info, well since she has so much power, she would not want to give it up to someone else more powerful.
cant wait for the next book! OMG I WILL DIE IF IT DOESN'T COME OUT SOON! I finished it at about 1 o'clock at night after 4 hours of continuous reading! Afterwards I was buzzing for ages and kept on reading the last line over and over! Hope it comes out soon!

Now that you mention it, it's very possible that the Priors (Tris's parents) could have taken on the name "Prior" to reference Edith because they looked up to her.

I don't know why are you all talking about the possible faction she is. She said that she was from an organisation that has done ALL of this, involving the whole situation, so, she can't be of a faction, if she is the lider of everything, do you understand me? i don't even think she lived into Chicago! she is apart of the whole thing.

Oh, but the important thing here is that, Tris said that she felt she knew her.

I think Edith Prior is (obviously) Tris' grandmother, on her fathers side.
Because of the last name thing. I understand that people can change their names, but this is too much of a coinsidence to consider that.
Tris' grandmother was in Erudite, as Tris' dad was born into Erudite.

As for Caleb, I can't help but think he's a double agent. If not, then he can rot with the rest of the Erudites! lol

At first I thought Edith was Tris's mother, but then I realised that Tris would have recognised her own mother even if the recording was from years ago and her mother would have been younger. The last part of the story was very confusing for me. Since the last name is Prior, I think Edith should be related to Tris through her father's side but since she mentioned working for an organisation that works to keep the peace in the world, it would have been weird for her to join Erudite. I tend incline towards Amity or Abnegation. It is also possible that her parents changed their last names when they joined Abnegation but they would have made a surname up and there wouldn't have been a Edith Prior. The cliffhanger left me wondering a lot especially because I didn't understand completely why Jeanine fought so hard to keep this information from the people and how can this society be the cure when they've just killed countless of people. In my opinion, if they are released to the in this situation, the world and the situation outside the fence will get even worse. I can't wait for the next book to figure out the answers to all these questions.

Well i think you might be wrong!!! , i think the faction she chose to be is :

DAUNTLESS - because she is willing to fight for STABILITY AND PEACE

(remember that the DAUNTLESS LAWS AND LEADERS BEFORE were RIGHTEOUS and not like in their present which is full of FEROCITY AND VIOLENCE)

That is WHY she will most reasonably be NATALIE PRIOR's mom - a DAUNTLESS LEADER - PROTECTOR OF JUSTICE AND TRUTH.(also because tris recognize her* may be from the facial features of her mom)

rationally that is why she let natalie move to abnegation when she learned that her daughter is a DIVERGENT .

Honestly at first I thought Edith was Tris's mom because of what she said about leaving behind the past and getting a new identity and taking up a false story about her life. I thought she lied about being Dauntless in the first place, but...

I think Edith Prior is possibly Tris's grandmother since when she was in that simulation Jeanine made, she's said to be a second generation, which makes her mom and dad first generations and her possible grandma an original. I'm not really sure whose mom is she, but since Tris's father is from Erudite, I'll take the possibility that Edith Prior is Abnegation and Tris's mom's mom.

Edith Prior might have chosen Abnegation above all factions because she mentioned in her video that she is a member of some peace and anti-crime and violence organization.

And I think it's impossible for Tris to not be related to her because at the last part of the video (and the book itself), Edith Prior smiled, and Tris said she recognized it. Must be a resemblance to her or she really knew her.

This could be too far fetched but my first thought when I heard Tris was 2nd gen was that she was the 2nd version of herself. Meaning a clone of Edith. It would make sense why she felt she looked familiar but did not recognize her because Edith is older in the video than Tris's current age of 16. What if they simply are cloning the divergent and using them to make more? That would explain why they had to wait till there were enough of them and why Amanda was so sure that eventually there would be.

in the 1st book it states that natalie (tris's mom) was born in dauntless and her mom made her go to a safer fraction SO CLEARLY edith was from DAUNTLESS and tris's grandmother

Tris's Grandma or aunt, possibly even mum.
