Matt I think Abnegation couples chooses either name if not anew one, not necessarily the husband’s. So, Andrew could have taken Natalie’s last name. Anyway, I don't think the society itself is the cure. They are humans after all. They are not immune to the plight of human nature that Edith (Amanda) spoke of. Obviously it got to the point where scarcity in the world caused everyone to turn on each other like many dismal futurists theorize. The city was clearly an experiment- one of those last hope for humankind things. The Divergent are a result of the attempt of the mysterious “organization” to breed these terrible traits out of people- to create a race of humanity which is more flexible (brain structure is a result of both genetics and environment). The science of breeding humans to create desired results is called Eugenics. The Divergent are the intended cure for what has happened to humanity. It seems Tris is the greatest success of the decades-long experiment. There is the question of how they came up with the faction system and why everybody but the Divergent seem to fit neatly into one of five categories (although Natalie hinted at it). As for Jeannine, who knows her ulterior motives? It seems she was trying to protect them from the mayhem outside but created it within the city limits. There was obviously something about Abnegation (selflessness) that was correct- they were the least like the people outside of the city and where the most Divergent came from. It will all be explained in the third book, I hope!

Carol If you actually think about it, it makes sense why Jeanine wanted to protect the info if Edith (Amanda) was from erudite... So in my opinion I think Edith is somewhat related to Tris and her dad. I think she was from erudite and that was why Jeanine was willing to sacrifice everything to get the the files...
