Finished S., looking forward muchly to the discussion. Debating between starting Asylum Piece or The Golem and the Jinni. Meanwhile, I will read Transmetropolitan, Vol. 1: Back on the Street as a palate cleanser. Hoping this will be the start of a beautiful friendship with a new graphic novel series.

Finished Transmetropolitan, Vol. 1: Back on the Street. Graphic novel with Hunter S. Thompson type character in future San Francisco. Good enough to make me check out Vol 2, but usual graphic novel stereotypes (big 'ol jerk laying down the Truth, smart female sidekick, but naturally an ex-stripper, sex and violence tucked into any available nook or cranny (no pun intended). Any regular readers of graphic novels want to explain to me why they all seem to be so, well, graphic these days? I have nothing against sex or violence (except the rapey kind), but I appreciate a little subtlety on occasion as well.

Started Asylum Piece, which is completely amazing. Anna Kavan seems to be enjoying a much justified rediscovery lately. These are short stories with a slight fantastic bent to them, and some gorgeous and unsettling images. I wouldn't be surprised to find out she was an influence on Catherynne Valente.

Sofia (fivesunflowers) | 7 comments Currently reading What Alice Knew by Paula Marantz Cohen , Eleanor Roosevelt Volume I, 1884-1933 by Blanche Wiesen Cook , Thirteen Steps Down by Ruth Rendell , and Wonder Women Sex, Power, and the Quest for Perfection by Debora L. Spar - 2 nonfiction, 1 biographical, 2 crime/thrillers - enjoying them all!

Olivia "So many books--so little time."" | 26 comments Just started reading The Da Vinci Code. So far it has been intriguing the way Dan Brown goes into symbolism etc. A very engrossing read.

Funny: the only graphic novel I've ever read (in full) is Maus, for the Treasure Hunt, and (considering the subject) it was decidedly not graphic. Good choice for me...

Foucault's Pendulum, which is what The Da Vinci Code wishes it could be.

True that. I guess I'm thinking of the more popular graphic novel series such as works by Alan Moore, Garth Ennis, and now Warren Ellis. Almost every popular graphic novel writer will point to the Sandman series as the height of the art form, and it was definitely NOT jam packed with aforementioned sex and violence. But, again, I'm by no means a graphic novel expert.

And I second the Foucault's Pendulum statement, although Dan Brown probably doesn't wish very hard when he's cashing his royalty checks. You might enjoy this parody of Brown: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/10...

Open-faced roll? More like a full Roman feast, complete with mythic vomitorium! That's quite an undertaking.

No, he doesn't. And he's not ashamed to be writing what he writes. He knows it's easy-reading escapism, and that's all he (publicly) aspires to. Maybe there's a hidden Nobelist crying deep inside him, but he seems happy with what he's got.

Piper's a lot less annoying in the book too. It's funny - having read the memoir, and understanding how serious some of the situations are in real life, I keep watching her exploits on tv & thinking, "Nooooo! Don't do it! Are you crazy?!"

Olivia "So many books--so little time."" | 26 comments Right now I'm reading 8.4 by Peter Hernon. It's about earthquakes on the New Madrid Fault in the Midwest. The New Madrid Fault is where the strongest quakes ever to hit the US took place in 1811 and 1812. One was so strong the Mississippi River ran backwards. So far this book has been an excellent read.

Kyle Butler | 1 comments I just finished reading "Anonymous" by Jason Tanamor. Discovered it as a free Kindle download last month. If you like experimental fiction like Palahniuk and Harry Crews, you should give this a try.

Just posted a review:

Downloaded this book as a free Kindle giveaway. Thought the story was intriguing. Glad I did. This is a hidden gem that needs to be discovered. Sure, there are dark topics and questionable dialogues between characters, but they all add to the intenseness (is that a word?) of the plot.

There are some writing flaws - grammatical - but overall this novel is an excellent read. It flows easily with its prose. I was only intending to read a couple chapters at a time but ended up finishing it in a couple days.

I would have given this a 5 but 5-star novels are for perfect books. This book wasn't perfect; it was damn near!

'Anonymous' is worth the time.

I think I might check it out. Survivor and A Feast of Snakes are two of my favourite books ever... I'm reading Satantango at the moment, which is very intriguing (I'm only about 50 pages in, so I still don't know where it's going)

Oh, wow! I lived on that fault line, right on the Mississippi, growing up, AND went through an earthquake then, a small one, only a 4? Maybe in the late 60's? I was only 8 or 9. I heard that story about the river running backwards --how do they know it's true? Also I always wondered if an earthquake had something to do with creating the limestone bluffs my town was built on.

Dudegreen | 1 comments I'm reading three books for pleasure right now:

The Art of Intelligence: Lessons from a life in the CIA's clandestine service by Henry Crumpton
I really like this book so far. The author had a very successful career and he shares a lot of very interesting information about the experiences he had and the nature of intelligence collection and utilization.

The Invisible Man by H.G. Wells
So far it has been rather dull, but I'm hoping the plot is going to gain some momentum. Too early to tell.

Leviathan by Thomas Hobbes
So far so good I suppose. I usually have to stew on philosophy for a while before I know if I am either disgusted or receptive. He seems like he is going to be a rather logical fellow and I usually get along well with those types of philosophers (not so much with folks like Sartre who is a bit of an idiot in my opinion albeit a rather humorous one). We will see.

Ewwwwww!!

I've been fortunate enough to spend the last week or so with Quin Woodward Pu's two memoirs, type A+ and DIGFAST. To those of you unfamiliar with this Gonzo journalist-esque bonne vivante, who is pretty much my age, she is most famous for this.

I just started reading The Girl With All The Gifts last night and have been totally sucked in already.

It was only released here yesterday, but they seem to have invested heavily in some flashy & deliberately vague & mysterious marketing, obviously designed to stir up some buzz. No author's name, publisher, blurb or anything on the posters, just a website.
It worked.

What really got me was this quote on the back of the book, "Kazuo Ishiguro Meets The Walking Dead". I'm in.
