I think I'm long overdue for another James Herbert binge. I STILL get creeped out thinking about the Rats series. There's a scene in Domain...... just brrrr.

I loved his books so much. but I lost my collection, and too many years elapsed, and..... I forgot where i was up to. I'm only now starting to rebuild my collection. I'll have to start reading from the beginning now!

Well okay, the kindle says I'm only at 47% but the last 10% of the book is endnotes (and when I go to the current endnote it's located at 94%), so that's basically the midpoint, right?

OMG. So. Long.

*The Pale King:

I'm still reading A Corner of White, which is really fun. Shame I've only been reading it while waiting in queues.

Thinking about also starting: The Seamstress and the Wind

Haha, I agree.

I'm reading Infante's Inferno, a book I know nothing about but appeared on a Best of the 80s table in Waterstones then I found it later in a charity shop- score! Thought I could double the number of South/Central American authors I like from Bolaño to Bolaño + this guy.

Thanks for the recommendation! I'm always looking for Spanish language authors, but a bit clueless :) I'll definitely check him out!

Finished my review of The Man Without Qualities which you can find here, and also reading Love is a Dog from Hell- Bukowski's poetry goes great with all the music he mentions in the poems :-)

Two of my favorites! As Ruby said before, maybe we should start a Maser and Margarita discussion, it's come up so many times lately.

For sure. Anyone can start a discussion thread on The Master and Margarita, any time. We have a folder for this - it just hasn't been used for a while - called, "Talking About Specific Books". I'm not best placed to start one on this, since I haven't read the book! :)

BTW - In case we're all getting sick of the "new" notifications on old posts in this thread (and others in the Group) - I've logged it as a bug, so I'll let you know when/if I hear anything back.

Well, I got a response to say they think it's because so many users are deleting their accounts and/or posts. Of course, that doesn't tell me how to make it stop. Will keep trying..

For the record, I don't think that's the case here anyway, since it keeps going back to the same point in the thread.

Justin Hampton (impboy) I am making my way through The Idiot. I've read much of Dostoevsky's work, including The Brothers Karamazov, and this is the one major work of his I've never gotten through. Also, This Is Burning Man: The Rise of a New American Underground for a book project I'm working on. The latter has some great information on the festival in its early stages. Really makes me wish I had gotten out to the pre-'97 playa.

Let us know what you think of This is Not a Test. The synopsis isn't grabbing me, but I've seen some good reviews. Hard to tell if it's genuinely "not-just-another-zombie-book" or not!

Finished The Wasp Factory on the weekend, and boy is this gonna be a good discussion read!

I've started reading The Disestablishment of Paradise, which is a book I knew nothing about, but was mysteriously drawn to when I saw it at a book shop last week. The cover is gloriously bad CG, over-the-top sci-fi weirdness - and I Love It! It has a really interesting structure too - written as a semi-nonfictional biography/history of the death of a planetary colony. Plus.... there are sentient plants! Gotta love that.

Meanwhile, I'm a bit hooked on The Disestablishment of Paradise. It's one of those weird things where you almost feel as if a book (or song etc etc) could have been written especially for you. The narrative is SO relevant to my own life. I don't know if others would appreciate it in the same way.

Has anyone else read any of Phillip Mann's other books?

I recently was involved in one in a different group. It sort of felt like cheating to start another one here :-)

I promise to stop by if you start one, thought. Although I am obnoxiously opinionated when it comes to this book. Actually most books I've read, to be honest.

I have to agree with you both- I started writing reviews really carefully last year that weren't going to bother anyone who liked (or didn't like) the book. Waste of time! If you're not going to be honest and offer a different point of view, it's just bland. If you're only going to say things I can Wikipedia, you're just a middle person. But I normally try wait a little while until the rant wears off before I start to write a review, stir things up without jabbing :D

Bringing me not seamlessly at all to my review of Middle C that I just finished, where I think the rant was still a little fresh. Not an easy book, but I did appreciate it :-)

Now reading Madame Bovary as part of my continued attempt to become more pretentious than Salman Rushdie, a battle that was lost before it started. I hear his next one's called "The Night of 1001 Book References" haha! I'm here all night, folks...

I'm not sure I actually agree with that - my reviews exist primarily to remind _me_ why I did, or did not, like a book/author. My opinionionation mostly comes out in book discussions.

"Now reading Madame Bovary as part of my continued attempt to become more pretentious than Salman Rushdie, a battle that was lost before it started."

Uh, oh. I'm reading The Moor's Last Sigh as part of the Rolling Challenge. I'm not having much fun. I think I started two weeks ago, and I'm about page 50.
