I do love comics, but i'm especially loving how offbeat and darkly comical this one is. It's like Twin Peaks in comic form. And listening to Stars new album while reading it makes for an even more disorienting experience...

Laszlo (steampunk) Finished Looking for Alaska, which was pure awesomeness, although the narrator went in and out between funny, easy to read sentences to big, thought provoking deep paragraphs randomly. I also started The Fault in Our Stars, The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom and The Order of Odd-Fish.

Mostly good! But very disturbing. Very brief review: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

Jan | 62 comments just finished The Crowded Grave: A Mystery of the French Countryside and highly recommend series.
Just started In the Woods. So far writing is impeccable. She describes summertime thru the eyes of a 12 year old perfectly in the opening paragraphs. looking forward to reading this.

message 710: by Riona (new)

Riona (rionafaith) | 457 comments I'm nearly halfway into In the Woods and really enjoying it so far. I haven't read a mystery in quite a while so I'm really liking the suspense.

message 712: by Monika (new)

Monika (vitabuvizuri) wow....I can't believe someone hasn't read HP yet! WOW. In a twisted way i do envy you! enjoy. I'm reading the hobbit and about to start the lord of the rings. preciouss!!

Riona (rionafaith) | 457 comments I finished In the Woods and really enjoyed it. Review here: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

I've started the sequel, The Likeness, but I'm not that far into it yet -- pretty much just gotten the setup of the case so far. I'm also reading Luna, which I've had out from the library for quite some time.

message 716: by Ismaa (new)

Ismaa Khan I am in the middle of The War of Don Emmanuel's Nether Parts by Louis de Bernières. Really loving it. It seems he wrote 2 more books after this which are linked, though not a trilogy. The more I read Bernieres the more I like his style. I have the other two also lined up on my book shelf.

I'm so glad you're loving that one, Ismaa. It's one of my all-time favourites. All three are good, but that first one was fantastic. It had a much greater sense of satire I think, too.

message 718: by Alisa (new)

Alisa I started reading Paint It Black by Janet Fitch, which was depressing but interesting, then I picked up a book of my friends' last night Women by Charles Bukowski and was initially intrigued but the story of a drunk in dysfunctional relationships started getting depressing also. Not sure if I will finish either.

Jan | 62 comments Started reading The Likeness and am re reading The Reader for a book club started at my local library. have to finish it by Tuesday.

I've been reading House of Leaves when I'm in Townsville and The Seducer on Kindle while I'm travelling. But I've gotten to a point where I REALLY want to start taking House of Leaves with me.

I'm currently trying to think what I can leave behind in its place, since there is such a strict weight limit on this particular regional airline. Damn you, heavy work laptop!!

Hello, I just joined this site and this group. I'm reading: In the foreign legion by Erwin Rosen. Goodreads doesn't seem to know it, maybe because it was published in 1910 and it's not famous. I got it from project gutenberg. I'm halfway through it and I like it. It's a good humoured, pleasant read which gives interesting insights into a strange society and a relatively recent past. His writing style is very modern though.

Hello, Mick,
I am big fan of Gutenberg. I'll have to look up your book there . Fair warning: this place can get addictive but I have found SO many new writers/books here. enjoy!

Hello Pam. Still trying to figure out how the commenting works here. Apologies in advance if they end up in the wrong place. Hope to spend regular time on GR, not worried about addiction to it. :D

All good - welcome Mick! We do use book title links here when we refer to books, so that people can look the books up, and the book pages link back to this forum. You just click on "add book/author" above the comment box. If a book isn't yet in the GR database, just let us know and somebody will probably add it for you. :)

OK, will do. In this case the book I'm reading isn't in the database yet, but I mentioned where it's to be found. Hope someone will put it up. Thanks and nice meeting you.

message 732: by [Name Redacted] (new)

[Name Redacted] | 139 comments Finished Jaina Proudmoore: Tides of War. It was crap, on the level of the "Super Mario Bros." film, only less campy and fun.

Tried actually reading Ready Player One, but had a hard time sticking with it, so I'll be listening to the glorious Wil Wheaton read it to me instead.

Still on with The Spook's Curse.

Riona (rionafaith) | 457 comments Mick -- is this the book you're looking for? In the Foreign Legion: The Experiences of a Journalist Who Joined the French Foreign Legion in North Africa at the Turn of the 20th Century

It's a newer printing but sounds like the same book. An ebook edition can always be added, too.

message 735: by Riona (new)

Riona (rionafaith) | 457 comments Actually, I've gone ahead and added the ebook edition using all the info and cover I could find from Project Gutenberg: In the Foreign Legion

For future reference, any users can add books to the database. You just need a librarian to combine the new edition with any existing records.

message 736: by Riona (new)

Riona (rionafaith) | 457 comments Back on topic: I finished up The Likeness (I was up reading until 7am yesterday), but still need to write a review...)

Now I'm working on Howl's Moving Castle in paperback and going to start number9dream on kindle as soon as I get on the subway in a few hours.

Theo | 159 comments I've just started Big Girl Small

message 742: by Frozenwaffle (new)

Frozenwaffle | 163 comments Finished Iron Council, which took me forever to read and never really gripped me. Its a very poor book compared to the previous 2. Finished also The Golden Compass and I'm all ready for the discussion. I liked it alot, at some point I just couldnt put it down and the pages melted away - I'm excited over reading the next two, hopefully they'll be as good.

Still munching on Anna Karenina, I'm enjoying it alot more than I thought I would. Some bits drive me crazy, like Levins farmwork in excruciating detail, but overall it is an interesting story.

Started today Something Wicked This Way Comes, such a bizarre writing style :D

[Name Redacted] | 139 comments Just finished Ready Player One. Hugely disappointed.

Started The Ghost Brigades, which doesn't start as strongly as Old Man's War, but is slowly getting back up there.

Still reading The Spook's Curse - mostly before bed.

Still reading The Spook's Curse and just started Wild Seed.

message 748: by Allen (new)

Allen (allenblair) | 17 comments Toss up between The Mongoliad: Book One and The Forever War, although I may try to read both at once. I've been hanging onto them for a while now, so thought I should go for it. Just finished The Scar (love Mieville) and Cloud Atlas. For those of you reading the Atlas, stick with it. It's good once you get into the rhythm.

And, since I'm new here, guess I should read some of the discussion books. Looking into them tonight!

Super indeed. Such a compelling character ... It may be the sword :) But I admired his stoicism, or that weird nature that put him beyond stoic.
