Abigail (handmaiden) | 391 comments Not quite exact, but similar enough to be worth mentioning, is the story "The King's Cream," by Frances R. Sterrett. In the story, the king drinks cream every day (actual cream!) and always wants it as cold as can be and gets upset with the cooks when it isn't cold enough, until they finally come up with ice cream. Then he is happy. It was published in a book called To Enchanted Lands, part of a set of 8 books called Books Trails, (you might also see it titled Book Trails to Enchanted Lands--I'm not completely sure what is the definitive form of the title), originally published in 1928 and later republished in the 40s.

Someone who loved it from their childhood put the whole thing on their blog here: http://primrosedesign.blogspot.com/20..., so you could have your boss take a look and see if it is at all familiar.

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) | 1396 comments I'll shelve it. If it's the wrong book, I can take it off our shelves if you let us know, Thomas. Thanks.

Bev (LaughingBrook2) | 1 comments There is a story like the one you're looking for in a 60's era school reader (possibly "More Streets and Roads"). A fussy king commands that anyone who finds him a food that is both hot and cold will be rewarded. A servant or commoner comes up with the idea of a hot sundae, and is rewarded.
