sequels are too often boring cop-outs. i hope there is no State of Wonder sequel. I don't see a need.

q. I've made Ann Patchett novels my 2012 project -- very enjoyable by the way. In Patron Saint of Liars, State of Wonder and Truth and Beauty, female relationships are the key to the books whether the relationship is mother/daughter, mentor or friendship. I don't remember that theme in Bel Canto, but is that a theme you intentionally investigate? Or, is that theme just a natural outgrowth of the story?
q Where did you get the idea of women getting pregnant into their 70s? Is there a myth out there that deals with that subject?

q i'm currently a student at the writers' workshop and there's a tendancy for young writers to try and get a novel published, instead of short stories (which are a harder sell). but you started off with short stories. could you talk a little about your own preference? and is there a collection in the works?
q How did you perceive or imagine so much love between different people in the real S. American hostage crisis that compelled you to write about it?
q: In this conversation, you referred to several "Big Box" bookstores, one being Books a Million. With that, you said something to the extent "I don't really count [them]" But in the same sentence you referred to Barnes and Noble without any reference per se.. 'Bad vibes with BAM??
