I got it yesterday and read it in one sitting! It was great! I called in sick just to have a day to myself and had planned on catching up on laundry and finishing my reread of At Graves End. Then I ran across Thorn Queen for free from amazon for kindle... I was double checking that it was coming out today and saw a link to the kindle store saying $0.00...
Best sick day ever!
The Dark Swan series is my fav of her series so far but I haven't read Vampire Academy yet. I am hit or miss with YA. Sometimes I really enjoy it and others, I just can't get into - Morganville was that way for me.

I love the Dark Swan series :D I think I might like it better then Georgina Kincaid but I'm not sure. I def like it better than VA but those are still really good as YA goes.

I just got the first Morganville Vamp book from the library today..is it not good?

message 608: by The Flooze (new)

The Flooze (the_flooze) | 1831 comments Kyle, so far I'm liking the Dark Swan series better too. Not that I don't like Georgina, but the angst has gotten to be too much for me!

I really like the Morganville series. The first book does have some weak moments, but I think that's true of most first books nowadays. It's got a good build up and the characters are likable. I also like the world she's set up. But she ends each book in a cliffhanger moment, which makes it all the more frustrating waiting for the next installment.

message 609: by Kyle (new)

Kyle Borland (kgborland) I guess I'll have to make my own opinion on Morganville :P

Dark Swan is my favorite too :P I love Eugenie...and Dorian..lol I don't really like Kiyo much..too passive and weak for my taste.

Yeah just call in sick if you have to work :)

I am not sure why but Morganville didn't really grab me. I thought it would and I really enjoy the weather warden series. YA really is random for me. I found the House of Night books surprisingly entertaining when after the first few sentences I was positive I wouldn't be able to read them. I hear really great things about the Morganville series though so I would definitely give them a chance.

I absolutely LOVE the Morganville series! The first one was a bit slower, but the 2nd book really takes off. Love the characters, the world she's built, the whole 9 yards! I'm not usually so effusive about YA books.

I read Cry Wolf before I read any of the Mercy books. I liked Cry Wolf and think the series has potential but I didn't like it as much as Mercy. I haven't read Bone Crossed yet, I'm a paperback gal so I'm waiting... it's hard!

I read Cry Wolf after I read the Mercy series and it was ok, I wouldn't say I loved it and definitely like Mercy Series better, but it is an interesting read. Need to get the next installment and see how they continue the story..... and DYING for the next Mercy book, but have awhile for that yet :(

Kelley Anne | 1619 comments I just started listening to the audiobook of Artemis Fowl last night. I really don't know what I think of it! It's extremely weird, but strangely enjoyable too!

The main character is this mad/genius/evil/psycho. But you just have to love him, or maybe love to hate him. I don't know!

I'm a fan of the Artemis Fowl series...Trust me, Artie, will grew on you. The only thing I'm not fond in the series is sometimes the heavy scientific jargon in describing equipments, weapons, etc.

But overall, I like...having read I think the first four...I still have to get my hands on the fifth book.

Let me know what you think.

Shannon (theholyterror) | 115 comments Started Swallowing Darkness (Meredith Gentry, #7) by Laurell K. Hamilton last night. I read Skin Trade about a week ago and hated it, although it was somewhat better than Blood Noir. But as for Swallowing Darkness (Meredith Gentry, #7), its like she wrote this years and years ago and not at the same time as Skin Trade. Really, it almost feels like a different author. Needless to say, I love it so far!

message 640: by The Flooze (new)

The Flooze (the_flooze) | 1831 comments I've come to love the Merry Gentry series more than Anita Blake. Her writing is different in that series and Merry and her men are more likable and real to me. The Anita Blake world is interesting, but I don't feel as invested in the characters by comparison. I think the definitive story arc plays a big role in the writing differences.

I agree about the men. Jean-Claude has been pussy-whipped and shoved into a corner. I think his only appearances in the last few books were phone conversations! And don't get me started on Richard, I honestly wish he'd died books ago ... Plus most of Anita's secondary men are interchangeable and forgettable.

But Doyle, Frost, Sholto, Galen, Mistral, among others are so different and easily identifiable. Although I have to say that I'm getting sick of the ankle-length hair. Really, who could fight with hair that long!

I have to say that I think my favorite of Merry's men is Sholto right now. I'm not sure why, it could be the "extra bits" that intrigue me. Haha. And for some reason it's easier for me to picture what he looks like too.

My least favorite though would have to be Kitto - he creeps me out.

message 642: by The Flooze (new)

The Flooze (the_flooze) | 1831 comments I'm with you, Shannon, on the creep-out!

I think Merry's story grants the men more individuality, while Anita's story is more about how her men hinder her in many ways. I guess it comes down to the heroines' personality differences. Merry has a much more open nature and can let her men be partners while Anita sees herself as above them and needing to make decisions for them rather than with them. It all comes down to personal preference, but I relate more to Merry's attitude.

I find it interesting that LKH has a harder time writing Merry. I see it as the more positive-minded series, where she seems to view it as the opposite!

Who COULD fight with all that hair? I have that thought with a lot of these books, not just LKH's! So many vamp and Fae have long hair, yet no one seems to grab at it cat-fight style!

Merry is basically Anita's polar opposite, and she's a much better character for it. Anita has started to steadily grow on my nerves. The stubbornness, the unwillingness to trust ANYBODY, and her sexual hang-ups, have almost become intolerable.

Michelle M. wrote: "I find it interesting that LKH has a harder time writing Merry. I see it as the more positive-minded series, where she seems to view it as the opposite!"

Maybe Anita is easier because all she does is copy/paste conversations and the such from previous books. I swear, every conversation she had with the cops in Skin Trade were rehashes of all her Dolph conversations. And why did we have to have that conversation with just about ever cop?! Man, it was so frustrating. Plus, you've got the Anita phrases that she reuses over and over again. I really think Skin Trade could have been cut down by at least 200 pages if you got rid of all the repeating parts.

Michelle M. wrote: "Who COULD fight with all that hair? I have that thought with a lot of these books, not just LKH's! So many vamp and Fae have long hair, yet no one seems to grab at it cat-fight style!"

I know what you mean with it appearing in other books as well. But LKH definitely has a mean fetish for it.

Angela (lala75) | 11 comments Hi all! Am new to goodreads - but this seems like my kind of group! I'm Angela, a teacher from England - am just getting into Sherrilyn Kenyon (!) and loves Charlaine Harris and MaryJanice Davidson. You all seem to have a head start on loads of books - there seems to be a few series I havent heard of - so might have to check them out!

Am just starting "night embraces" - am saving "dead and gone" for my holiday!

Am must have reads - series - i should look into?

Kelley, Morganville is a great YA series. Hope you enjoy it!

message 647: by Kelley Anne (new)

Kelley Anne | 1619 comments Angela - welcome to the group! It sounds like you are in the right place. There are a ton of series that you should look into. But what's your preferences? YA or not YA, Vamps, weres, fae? Lots of romance or little bit of romance? Or a mixture of all of the above? lol

Trust me, we can fill up your "to-be-read" shelf with enough books to last you a long time!

message 648: by The Flooze (new)

The Flooze (the_flooze) | 1831 comments Angela, welcome! You named three of my favorite authors, so I'd suggest Karen Chance's books if you haven't read them yet. It has the spice and great worldbuilding of Kenyon, is even more intricate than Harris in terms of vamp and Fae society, and will make you laugh out loud like MJD.

You'll find so many new series through Goodreads, you won't know what to do with yourself!

I LOVE the Morganville Vampires!! One of my favorite series, period! I found a book of short stories at BN today that I hadn't noticed before that has a Morganville story I'd never read before. Some other writers I like are in it, too, so, of course, the book came home with me. Audio is the ONLY way to go with STORM FRONT, it is the weakest of the whole Harry Dresden series and I really didn't like it when I read it. When it came out on audio I decided to give it a shot again. LOVED it! James Marsters is the perfect reader for this series.....and probably for any other one he might want to read!
