If that were the case......then we would have never of known about Peeta, and there would be a lack of story.(Well, for me anyway! I do like a love traingle)
The rebellion story would have still beed there, but only Gale would have been in the picture.
And frankly - anything with 'only' Gale would have been boring!

I think that they would have ended up staying together, Katniss and Gale, and then they both would have gotten killed and I would have laughed in their dead faces for being so stupid.
Well since Gale obviously had more survival skills, I think he and Katniss would have made it a much quicker games. However, Katniss would have lost Prim and her mom a lot sooner. UNLESS, Peeta stepped up and challenged his abusive mom and fed Katniss' family while she was gone. THEN she would have felt indebted to him and there still would have been the triangle thing. Still a pretty good story, I would say. Gale was obviously more threatening to the Capitol though, so I think they would have been gunning for him from the beginning. The baker's son (Peeta) didn't seem to be a threat to the Capitol so they left him alone until later.... Interesting question!

I've thought of this many times, but Gale's character was all wrong to commit that kind of sacrifice. Gale and Peeta represented both sides of Katniss. Gale was too much of a survivor, too ruthless, to risk getting himself killed, but he also wouldn't have been willing to perform for the capital in the arena. Even if Gale had entered the games, I think he'd have died sooner than later. It's the fact he has so many skills as a hunter that would work against him. Gale would have had a target on his chest. That's what happened to Katniss. In some ways, the only reason Katniss survived the Games the first time was because of Peeta.
I like your point Bill; there's a discussion topic elsewhere that if there could only be one victor, who would it be and I frankly feel people underestimate Peeta's influence on Katniss' survival in the games.From the get-go, Peeta guided Katniss and was that voice of reason; just the simple head-shaking while on the platforms delayed Katniss from getting the head start for the bow and arrows and forced her to listen to Haymitch's advice and head for the hills. From that point forward, Peeta makes every attempt to protect Katniss from even her worst enemy, herself.
She is much like Gale in that she is willing to be ruthless and risk her safety; I also think she is a touch too impulsive at times which sometimes is helpful, other times harmful.
Anyway, I'm glad you pointed that out because I do feel people harp a bit much on Peeta's "softness" and forget his pivotal role in the arena; the two (Katniss and Peeta) were very much two halves of a whole. Neither would have made it out without the other.

what if gale killed ketniss in order to form a rebel to the Capitol, say, he kill katniss when they said there would be only one victor and then the audiences cried and gale said this is all capitol's fault and he become the mockingjay!
If Gale was chosen to go into the Games instead of Peeta, there wouldn't be a love triangle. It would completely mess up the whole story.
The entire plot would have been totally different. Suzanne Collins did an excellent job with the plot the books actually have, so I don't think they would have been as good had Gale gone to the arena with Katniss. Peeta is my favorite character anyways, so I might not have liked the books as much had he not been a main character.

then that would have been an interseting hunger games!
but gale and katniss's family would have died and therefore wouldnt be interesting. but peeta would have probably switched places like katniss did with prim. and gale would b mad and peeta would explain that he didnt do it for that reason. everything would go crashing down cuz gale loves katniss and they r suppose to b cousins!!

The cousins ploy wasn't established until after the Hunger Games was finished; it was to gloss over any skeptism people would have (and keep the Capitol at bay) since Katniss was supposed to be madly in love with Peeta.
I also don't know if Peeta would have volunteered for Gale; I really don't think he develops his strength until circumstances are forced upon him and he has no other choice. I adore Peeta but since he tends to be an introvert and a softie, it seems a stretch that he would declare himself like that in the first book. The tournament strengthens him so that in CF he has no hesitation in volunteering but THG? I don't know...

Sadly, if Gale would have been chosen as tribute his family would have died from starvation. D: But also, GALE AND KATNISS WOULD BE TOGETHER!!!!!! (If you couldn't tell, Team Gale! :p) Well, Peeta might have also helped Gale's family only because of Katniss. Well who really knows. It would be very interesting.
there would probably be no declaration of love during the games, there for, there would be no rule change about two victors, so if both of them didn't die, only one would survive. Good bye love story. *__*P.S. I LOVE PEETA...
