MB Taylor | 22 comments This is the first SF book I remember reading sometime back in the mid to late 60s. A man builds a time machine and is going to travel to medieval (?) times maybe with a boy (son or nephew). Someone 'spins the dial' and boy accidentally travels to prehistoric times and grows up with cave people. Before accident male adult makes a point about the time machine being able to travel in time but not space.

MB Taylor | 22 comments I don't think that's it. In my admitedly vague 40+ yr old memories only the boy travels back in time. I think he stays in the past quite a while (years?) and changes quite a bit.

I have no idea what the cover might have looked like, but I checked it out of the library so it was probably a hard back.

I remember that the adult and the boy were originally planning to go to medieval France and (maybe) spent some time learning the language.

Debbie's Spurts (D.A.) That's very familiar...was there a prehistoric creature boy ran into that clambered up vertical walls and came back with? Was a team later sent to retrieve him? Was the France destination Agincourt during crusades or in time of Charlemagne or Roland?

*ack* I can remember to bug you with those questions but a handful of books I remember with the France, time travel, prehistoric and stranded kids threads are giving me trouble remembering the title ven though some plots and characters are clear.

MB Taylor | 22 comments Lots of good questions for which I have few answers.

I don't think a team was sent to retrieve him, and I think he came back alone (but I'm less sure of that). (view spoiler)

I was likely only 10 or 12 when I read it and wouldn't have known about either Agincourt or Charlemagne. There may have been a specific year mentioned (no idea what it might have been) or I might be confusing that with other time travel story.

I read it a long time and hundreds of SF books ago...

It might be Mists of Dawn. According to the wiki article, it was first published in 1952 and has a boy being accidentally sent back in time to the stone age via his uncle's time machine.

MB Taylor | 22 comments Oh my. I think that's it. Thank you very much. By an odd coincidence, I recently bought a couple of books by Chad Oliver at a used book store. Read one and enjoyed it, so he's on my watch list...
