If we are currently reading a book, but don't finish it until January, should we count it at 2008 or 2009?

Sandi, I'd say that's a personal choice . . . whatever you do is fine! Right now, I've got 3 books in progress and with 2 days left in the year it's not looking like I'll finish all three. My list will be for the books I finish in 2009 - so chances are, there will be a couple that I've already started in there. Please do what feels best to you, though!
Great question, Sandi! I was wondering the same thing, too. Thanks for being flexible about including books we are currently reading, Kay. :) Happy New Year's to everyone!
I actually started 2 new books today and was planning to count them for 2009- only 20 pages in! Glad to know that is OK!
No matter when I started it, if I finished it in 2009, it is a 2009 read. Some people are really strict about the year-end (and month-end) thing, but too many rules mean too little fun to me. :-)
I guess I'm one of this strict people :-)I finished The Gargoyle on Jan. 2nd but didn't count it because I wanted a fresh slate.
I wouldn't say you are strict. I just think that each person has a way they count things. Some people count from when they started, or some count from when they finished, or someone like you doesn't do either. It is all prefrence I think.

I'm with Liz, the date I finish a book is the date I use for all of my logs.
