Interesting question!! I was this close to starting Kate Daniel and when I went to my library link my psy\changeling book was ready so went that route. I hear a lot of good things about the Kate Daniels series.
I absolutely LOVE the Kate Daniels series. I read Fever and was sucked into it at the time, but it's one of those series that was a little to drawn out for me and I can't see ever rereading Fever. Parts of it were too emotionally exhausting and a few things aobut it frustrated me. But I just recently finished a "reread" (via audiobooks) of Kate Daniels and I could probably start all over and listen to it again right now. The first Kate Daniels book starts out slowly and they don't do the greatest job with the world building in the first book. But if you can stick it out through the first 50 or 60 pages of Magic Bites (to when Kate meets Curran, Beast Lord of Atlanta) it really takes off then.In general I prefer the character of Kate to Mac. Even though Mac does grow through the series, Kate just has a greater emotional depth to me. And her interactions with Curran are among some of the funniest scenes I've read. Kate is so strong and so tough, and yet there is also incredible vulnerability that you eventually get to witness. I find that this series has a near-perfect blend of kick-ass adventure, humor, and romance for me. I'd take Curran over Barrons any day. That's right, I said it.
Have I mentioned that I love the Kate Daniels series? Kate Daniels (and Mercy Thompson by Patricia Briggs) are the first series I'd recommend to anyone.
They are both favourties of mine but I would say they are a bit different. But I would just put it down to the authors and there writing.
Kates character is a bit more full on and hardcore than Mac I would say. There is definitely more complicated world building in the Kate Daniels series too.
I could go on all day, but lets just say if you enjoyed the fever series I would give the Kate Daniels series ago and prefer to looooovvvvveee it!
Also be prepared to be loaded with info at the beginning , it is necessary and by the time you get to the next book you won't notice it:)

I loved that Mac's character develops through the series, but it's true that she doesn't allow herself a lot of moments of wickness..

Actually, I read that ever KMM was all over Curran too, so it's ok. ah ah
That's where my question comes from, if even the author of Fever is a fan of Kate Daniels, it must be good.
I admit I am rereading the Fever series, but I'm French and reading in English and I feel I have missed some details the first time around. (that's my excuse anyway!)

They are both very good series. Kate Daniels starts off a lil different than I expected but once you get into it it's so worth it. Kate Daniels and Mac are heroes of mine. And thier men Curran and Barrons, ooh they are both hot and alpha males. I don't think I can choose one. Good luck deciding.

I love both series and in my opinion they are completely different. Both are extremely addictive though. The question for me is Barrons or Curran? Hmmm....sod it I'll take them both!
It seems people have a hard time choosing between the two. Fever is my top favorite, and I'm glad another serie seems to be that good. Christine said Fever was sometimes 'emotionally exhausting' and I couldn't deny that having read the entire serie in couple of weeks, night day, not looking up the entire time but I did enjoy that fact and found it difficult to find another series that was that gripping.
What annoys me are the repetitions, I know the author have to make some (because you're not supposed to read the books back to back I guess) but it gets to me sometimes..
As for Barrons, I haven't found a male character that I preferred to him (I'm that close to get a fan tattoo on my neck with a 'Z' in the middle ah ah ).. yet, not even Bones, or Grey, or Dimitri... but I am looking forward to meet Curran!!

I'm going to be odd man out and say that Barrons really doesn't stand out for me among all the alpha males I've read about, other than the uniqueness of what he is. Although, that being said, he was a prime motive for me to read the series. I think I read all five books in two weeks, because I just had to find out what Barrons was. It was driving me crazy. And I did really like the sweet moments he had with Mac at the beginning of book 4 (I think it was book 4, you know what I'm talking about). But by that last book, I was really ready for it to be over. It was just a little too long and drawn out for me. Which could have just been my mood at the time. Sometimes I like to take the long and winding route and enjoy the scenery. Other times I just want to get to my destination. I think maybe if she had resolved some mysteries better within each book, instead of dragging everything out until the very end it would have worked better for me. I don't mind a good cliffhanger as long as at least some issues are resolved within the book. But she just kept adding more and more mysteries with each book and never resolved most of them up until the last one. But for those two weeks, I was completely consumed and obsessed with the series. But I don't have much desire to revisit it. Where with Kate Daniels, when each new books comes out it's like catching up with old friends. But I think that all comes down to person preference over the author's writing style.
And finally, just because it was one of the first UF/PNR series I read, Bones will always have a very special place in my heart.
;-) ahhh Bones...I see what you mean. You're right, KMM was adding more and more questions as we went along and I remember, at the time, that I was desperate for some answers. Rereading it, is actually easier because you know the answers so you can breath throughout the reading!
I also remember that for the first time in my life, I grieved a book character! that was weird, first time that happens to me!
But I loved the world KMM created and Mac and Barrons building up

This is slightly off topic, but how does Moning's Highlander series compare to Fever?
It's funny you say that. I was just about to start reading the first one but:1- the reviews weren't that great
2- KMM described them in a way that didn't appeal to me on her website
3- the 1st book cover is so kitsch I am preparing myself psychologically to not judge the book by its cover (and obviously fell to cross that bridge)..
So instead, I started this thread because the Kate Daniel's series seem closer to the Fevers' than the Highlanders'

Did you start Kate Daniels yet? If not when do you think you will? I was going to start today but could put it off for possible buddy read situation. I have another book started but was a little disappointed so I could just plug away at that.
No I haven't started yet because I'm doing a Master at the moment and I have 3 assignments to hand-in within the next 3 weeks. I know that if I start a new serie, I will read it instead of studying!!!!
But do let me know how you get on with it and what you think of it!!
KMM Highlander is your typical PNR book series where everyone is hot, the girl is always a virgin (cringe) and there is not much originality plot wise. That being said Fever is more UF than PNR (the romance in the series, if you could call it that, was not to my liking at all), so in that sense it is more comparable to the Kate Daniels series.Now the question about which is one better it will depend very much on taste. For those who loved Fever, I think it's safe to say they will enjoy Kate Daniels too.

I read the first Highlander and then when I found out that the heroines in the rest of the Highlander series were all virgins (cringe) I didn't read the rest. I just despise the virgin heroine trope in PNR.
The Kate Daniels series and Fever series have the same vibe. I love both of them.
;-) I thought of that, that Mac isn't a virgin.. that it was pretty rare in the UF and PNR world and it was a relief to have another point of view!
You end up comparing all the heroines's first times!
I still want to try the Highlanders but I think after 1, I won't be reading the whole series. Maybe it's better to start with the MscKeltar's stories then..
And I'm definitely starting the Kate Daniel's next!

I have endless love for the Kate Daniels series. No matter how rough my day has been, I can come home and read a couple of chapters of any of this series and INSTANTLY feel 100% better. Kate and Curran make me smile, I love sarcasm and wit in my books and this series has that in spades. Kate is quite a complex character, battle hardened and extremely secretive, but willing to give up her life for those she loves.
Curren is...well...Curran. I can't explain the ways of the mysterious Beast Lord but I love him to pieces. Heck I'd have made a move on him if I wasn't so afraid of Kate cutting me up into itty bitty pieces!
Anyway, yeah...much love for this series, I'd highly recommend it :)

Well said, Vikki! Man, this makes me want to drop everything and reread them. And I just finished listening to the whole series on audio.
Well!I have read 4 of these books and the start was a bit difficult. Now I can say that I love Kate and Curran, but (and it's a major one), I really got into it after the second book!
So my vote stands with Mac and Barrons. The Fever series are still my favorite.
However, I agree with you Nikki, I love Kate's character, she is complicated and secretive and does not disappoint us by her decisions. I have still Magic Slays to read and decided to read Andrea' story, I love her character too. After these 2, I'll move on.

I've read all the published Kate Daniels stories (which then led me to the Edge series by the same authors which are equally good) and am up to number 3 in the Fever series. They're really different but I like both. Kate Daniels Book 1 takes at least 100 pages to really find its voice but after that it's hard to put down, by the 5th book I was begging for more and got some short stories on the kindle. I'm finding the Fever series to be the same = hard to put down that is...
I fell in love with the Fever Series! It's the 1st series that has really captured me since I read the Vampire Chronicles years & years ago. This is a series that I talked about incessantly with friends, waited on bated breath for updates, refreshed my browser like a crazy person when I knew a new teaser was going to be leaked. Obsessed is not the word! Someone above mentioned that it was emotionally exhausting & it is, but that is what made it special for me. There is tragedy that is gripping & is scars you. Very few books, let alone UF/PR have been that for me. And Barrons, I mean he is the Alpha! The Fever books are ones that I'll reread, I want to immerse myself in that world.Kate Daniels to me is what the 1st few Anita Blake books were (obviously not the latter ones-but those 1st couple were dynamite!). They are good, the story line is interesting, the characters are great...there is all the potential in the world. I will say Kate's history is fascinating to me. And Curran is certainly no slouch. For me though, it is not necassarily a series I will re-read (so I'm just the opposite of a previous poster.)
Bottom line is both are great series. Different & unique & totally worth a read.
And I am the exact opposite of Kristin. Lol, love, love the Kate Daniels series not so much love for the Fever series. In fact I read all except the last one. Just couldn't get into Mac whatsoever!

I love both series. I first read Fever and i was so crazy about it! I've read some series after that but somehow no other books have reached the same level as Fever on my standard. And then i've read Kate Daniels! Damn! I looooove Kate Daniels! No, i'm not gonna choose which one is better. They're both on the top spot for me! It's a tie!
Fever series is dark and captivating in a way that KMM kept feeding us so many puzzle pieces and left them unanswered. Barron is one mysterious mofo. i'm racking my head wanted to know everything! but i gotta admit the series left me feeling exhausted and well spent. i'm not sure i would reread it because now the mysterious is gone.as for Kate Daniel series, what make me love it is Kate's sarcasm and Curran's dry humor. That guy can cracked me up even when his is absolutely being serious. I love rereading them and every time they didn't fail to make me smile and laugh my head off.

That would be like comparing apples to oranges. Both are terrific stories, but very different worlds. I anxiously await releases from both.
They're both good. But I enjoyed the Fever series more.
I prefer the Kate Daniels world over the Fever world. Fever was a little darker.
I have to agree with @cher, I absolutely LOVE the Kate Daniels series, I re-read them all the time. But I think I'm one of those weird few who just didn't really fall in love with the fever series, I read them but I just got too irritated with Mac and I also felt kind of anxious throughout, I never really got a handle on what was going on. Some people love that feeling but I don't. I also didn't really like Anne Bishop's black jewels series even though people love it and I really loved Jaqueline Carey's Kushiels series which is often pointed to as a comparison. Go figure!
If my friends know I read this, my cred as a full-blooded male goes down the toilet. Kate Daniels is a kind of novel -and as a story telling- that is never drawn out, nor is it ever too detailed. It lets you fill in the imagination and never becomes disappointing.
It's a great book that I couldn't stop since I first started. Fever series doesn't come close.
I love both...I think that both series has different feel and different story to tell. I re-read both series numerous times.
I have read both series and while the Fever series was really good I never felt personally invested in what happens. The Kate Daniels series is so much more. It sucks you in and makes you laugh. It is my all time favorite series. I love the characters and their personalities and feel like they are long lost friends every time I read a new book.
I love them both but I must say it took me longer to get absorbed in the Kate Daniels series. However, by the third book I was hooked and now I think they are just as good.
I really love how Mac the Fever series is naming things and creating things as we read. It pretty cool. I also LOVE Jericho! oh i still dream of sweet sweet Jericho... well he's everything but sweet but... ughhh i love him! As for the Kate Daniels series... Kate is so bad ass i love her. I think shes so abnormally cool it hurts! I admire her. I also admire Mackayla too. She's Learning everything from scratch and is doing pretty well. Then there is Curran aka the Beast Lord in the Kate Daniels series.... sigh... Curran is really different but you cannot deny she love for Kate thats for sure... it might be odd in the first couple of books but ... some things will start standing out soon enough.NOW... which is better... I cant say which is better but i can say how i felt reading each..
-KMM's series had me going crazy because lets face it..... No one knew what anyone was or anything and the suspense and surprises were crazy ... but crazy good thats one of the reasons why i loved this series... i was not only in it for the love story... i was also in it for the plot because since book two youre just like but who! WHAT! WHHHHY!
-Ilona Andrews' was has a crazy back story and you cannot help but love and relate to her. Then there are the side characters like Derek and Jim who make the series a little more interesting.... also i didnt feel the same suspense like it KMM's series... i Really love the Characters. Like Curran... althought he was crazy and alpha male and super nutso at times... i loved him...
So ... I guess they are both good in their own ways... because You want different things reading them... except in both you want the lead couple together
I've only read the first two books of each, but so far, I think I prefer the narration of Kate. Sometimes Mac has this tendency to take the reader out of the present that I find myself lost in her rambling and stories. It's like she's telling a story but not at the same time.I prefer the NOW, hearing what's happening as it's happening without the distraction of being sucked out.
Character wise, they're all great. I think I might prefer the secondary characters in Kate Daniels a little more so far though.
