SOLVED. Writer goes to small town where a small dog talks to him [s]

I first read this book sometimes in the early nineties, but I think I
bought it second hand, so would have been published earlier than that. It
was about a writer who goes to a small town in America some where...I
can't remember why he was there... And I think he stays in a guesthouse
with an elderly lady and her dog, whose name I think was Kang. The dog
follows him everywhere and then one day starts talking to him about how
the dogs run the town, at least I think that is what happens!
If anyone knows of this book, would love some help in remembering the
name.

The OP made it sound like light fantasy, whereas the description makes it sound like literary horror. I'm def. interested to know if it's the same book.

Oh my gosh, that's it! Land of the Laughs. It's been driving me a bit crazy, so thank you very much. Will definitely try and get myself another copy and re read it. I was a bit off with my description though, I hope I haven't given away too much of the plot.
