David Excuse my "French" in the title, but I can't describe IN WORDS the emotions I felt after concluding the Hunger Games series with Mocking Jay a couple seconds ago! Why did Gale and Katniss have to leave on such a bad note? Why the F**k did Prim die?! I liked how Katniss killed Coin but there was no time for her to think about what she'd done! Idk if she knew it was Katniss who killed her!!!

I don’t know WTF Suzanne Collins was thinking in ending the book. But it was FAR BY the worst f**king book I ever read in my ENTIRE life. I hate stories that have sh**ty endings! I can never get over it since when I read books I attach myself so DEEPLY in the world the author illustrates. I'm done with Collins and I think it would have been better had I never read the Hunger Games.

David- Of district 11

Anika Prim had to die for many reasons.. Katniss wouldn't have killed Coin if Prim hadn't have died. Gale was responsible for Prims death so Gale knew that Katniss wouldn't be able to forgive him for that. If Prim didn't die Katniss wouldn't have ended up with Gale or Peeta, because she would have no reason to be mad at either one of them.

Maybe it's less about it actually being a "bad" ending and more that it just didn't end the way you wanted it to?

message 5: by Lin (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lin I think it was a nice break from cookie cutter endings where everyone ends up happy and the girl has to make a heart-breaking decision between her two beaus. Boo-hoo.

Nabila I agree! Went through all of that for this?!

Nabila David wrote: "Excuse my "French" in the title, but I can't describe IN WORDS the emotions I felt after concluding the Hunger Games series with Mocking Jay a couple seconds ago! Why did Gale and Katniss have to l..."

Damn harsh much

I kinda dislike "sappy" endings as well. But I wasn't looking for that, I was looking for an ending that added up, that resolved ALL the questions I and undoubtedly others must’ve had. I know characters die; it makes it more interesting in my opinion anyway. But! Prim's death was COMPLETELY unnecessary and it Collins made the mistake of killing of characters that the book was based on. Prim was the catalyst for the entire series. She was Katniss's reason for fighting. Gale, her childhood friend shunned and never heard of again after Katniss kills Coin. I even want to know more about Buttercup. Books can't end, especially series, with terrible, unresolved, hasty, and sloppy endings. That’s why I usually dislike Trilogies as usually go for the Sagas or 6-part series.

Aleesha Prim's death was not unnecessary... Katniss went into the Hunger Games because of Prim and Katniss chose to be a part of the war and in war there are consequences. Collins uses irony by Prim dying because that is why Katniss went in and to be honest she had to lose something. Coin killed her because she knew it would break Katniss, which backfired in Coin's face. I felt similarly when I first read it, but think about it, if Prim had lived and Coin ruled then it would have been the same as before.

Michael Sussman I agree completely. I loved Hunger Games, thought Catching Fire was a decent sequel, and felt Mockingjay was a total mess.

I feel stongly that YA novels, however dark their plots, should end on a hopeful note. Mockingjay's ending is bleak and forlorn.

Perhaps you're right. The series probably should've been marketed to an older audience.

Aleesha What I find funny is that the majority of people who have a problem with the ending are adults. I have rarely heard of a kid disliking it.

Chin123 This book was so boring, I quit reading it!
BEST THING I EVER DID!!!!!!!!
:)

im 12 and absolutely hated the ending, it was, lets put it politely, utter crap. first book was epic awesomeness, 2nd book was decent and 3rd book was CRAP! there was no emotion when prim died and how did peeta return back to normal.

Debra I started the final book but refuse to finish it as I hated the direction it was going and I knew that Prim was going to die...

Michael Sussman My son was 12 when he was reading the trilogy. I took Mockingjay away from him once I finished it & told him he'd have to wait until he was older. He found the beginning so bad, he didn't even put up a fight!

I'm not a kid but I'm not legally an adult (In the USA anyway) and I hated the book.

i agree with this. but i still feel like the ending was crappy. the details of the ending just ran together like she was tired of writing the book and just wanted to get it over with! The whole 30 years later could have been left out, i would have liked to know more detail about what happened after she "came to"

Exactly, like I was saying thats why I generaly don't go for trilogies as I do the sagas or 6-part series. Cause Collins ended the book in a hasty, and sloppy manner that made me and other readers feel puzzled at the end.

Nuria Although I wanted katniss and gale together or dead in batle, I have to say theres no better partner for katniss than Petta , they both have been in the arena and have sufered the same. They undestand each other.

But...the ending was a mess. I can't belive prim died and katniss saw it...really? And then she kills coin? she was borned to kill president snow in the most horrible and slow way. And he dies because he starts laughing? Damed Crap.

I have to say I enjoied the books, a lot.

I read thebook. I looked at the ending. And i realised how much of my time i wasted.

MightyMoose Its sad to see how many people miss the point. It doesn't bode well for our future.

Kristen Hill I liked the ending but not so much the execution if that makes sense. The ending was very rushed. If the ending bothers you write some fanfiction. How would you like it to end?

Nuria Mightymoose wrote: "Its sad to see how many people miss the point. It doesn't bode well for our future."

we don't have to read the books to know that.

That's stupid. I agree possibly that Prim might have needed to die, but in the right way. And Collins sucks at killing people off....oh, and by the way, your favorite character just got his head blown off-moving on. Then she never acknowledges about them again. But Katniss has no motivation throughout this whole book. She doesn't seem to care if the whole country needed her, it wasn't her problem. Not until the end, when her sister was killed and she ends up murdering Snow, does she ever want to actually fight back! Collins ends it with her with Peeta and basically given up on rebelling against anything anymore. They are still controlling her and she does nothing with her life except have kids and not piss off any more people. Its crap. Oh and she shouldn't need an excuse to pick Peeta, she should just know. Not, oh well, i'm mad at Gale so i guess i don't have to choose and its fate for me to be with Peeta. No. That's a joke.

Nuria Mightymoose wrote: "Its sad to see how many people miss the point. It doesn't bode well for our future."

but the part of the book that for me explains better the fact that human beeing have no hope is when they are deciding to do the last hunger games with sons of the capitol people or not, and KATNISS VOTES YES. No hope at all.

Chasity i felt the ending was very rushed and i would have liked a little more substance, especially with the grief of losing her sister, i agree with PP that this was the least best book of the 3

Darlene I liked it a lot. I loved how Suzanne Collins wasn't afraid to make the ending dark and realistic no matter what audience was reading her books. In my opinion it ended exactly how it should have ended, and how I look at it nothing happened for no reason.

message 32: by Dee (new) - rated it 3 stars

Dee you realize she did that to manipulate the situation that resulted in Coin's death...she never wanted the games, but she knew that she had to vote for them, in order to lull coin into complaencey (for lack of a better word), so that she could kill her

I agree. I was so sad when Prim died but I think Suzanne was right in using that ending. She wanted to portray how Coin was as ruthless as Snow.

Prim wasn't necessary to die. She was the entire meaning for the Hunger Games, if it weren't for Prim; Katniss would've probably married Gale, and ran off to South America. IDK. But the ending was tacky and Collins killed Prim because I believe she was too lazy to continue writing about her.

MightyMoose And then Katniss wouldn't have felt the need to get revenge for Prim's death and wouldn't have shot Coin. Coin would go on to rule Panem as she'd ruled D13. Food would be doled out with precision, noone would have fun, everyone would wear identical grey clothes. The final Hunger Games would be held with the Capitol's children.

message 36: by Eban (new) - rated it 5 stars

Eban O'Sullivan If Prim didnt die then the hole hunger games world would fall apart. But what i didnt understand was the need to have Finnick, Boggs and the rest of them to die the most horrific deaths yet! There was no emotion when they died
(excluding boggs) but c'mon!

message 37: by MightyMoose (last edited May 02, 2012 09:12PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

MightyMoose Because they were in the middle of the war zone being chased by Snow as well as Coin they didn't have time to stop and lament every death. They had to mourn on the run. But when they were down in Tygris' cellar, katniss reflects back on the deaths. Then she comes clean to the others about the mission not exactly being Coin's idea, they admit they knew all along but chose to follow Katniss because they believe in her. Katniss is beaten down and feeling like she can't complete her goal, but the others tell her not to waste the deaths of the others and to keep going. It brings her back, determined to carry on.

Maya Nunez My Reactions When I Read the Books:
Hunger Games: Oh my lord this is the best book ever to be written. Loved everything about it!OMG I am in love!

Catching Fire: It wasn't as good but most sequel are a little slower then the rest.

Mocking Jay: Are you kidding me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
P.S: Still love Collins and her writing

Eli Reading that first post made me lol. The ending was actually very good. Would you rather have had Katniss die instead of Prim? Would you rather have had Peeta or Gale die? Those are the questions you should be asking yourself.

If Katniss died that would have been Epic, and no I don't dislike her It's just that her death would hvave been more sencible and ment more than the death of Prim. Also, I expected both Gale and Peeta to die.

message 42: by C.C. (new) - rated it 5 stars

C.C. The only thing I hate about all of this is that Finnick and Cinna died, other than that Im good. I mean for me it's all about the perspective. All of this horrible shit happened to Katniss/everybody but in spite of that at the very end they still tried to rebuild their lives instead of being swallowed by anger, grief and sadness.

message 43: by Eli (new) - rated it 5 stars

Eli Valid points. But, you could have kind of have seen the ending in book 2. Just slightly. The way how Katniss was obsessed with getting Peeta back. The way she showed how she loved him in her own special way. Gale was great too, but I knew that it would be Katniss and Peeta coming together in the end. ^.^ Sorry if I spoiled anything, but if you're on here, then the ending has already been spoiled.

David wrote: "Excuse my "French" in the title, but I can't describe IN WORDS the emotions I felt after concluding the Hunger Games series with Mocking Jay a couple seconds ago! Why did Gale and Katniss have to l..."

I completely agree. I'm of the mind that Katniss was a strong female character. She should be revered for that but instead, Collins made her lovesick and hopeless without the man to hold her up. That's crap! Prim dies, yes, but then there's no reconciliation with her mother, no fact finding about Gale's role, and despite Peeta being completely insane only a couple of chapters previously, she still "loves him". NOT REAL.

Also, the ending itself would have been "OK" but the Epilogue is what does it for me. Really? Then Katniss has a son AND a daughter?! Happy Harry Potter much?! Why not. Thankfully we don't learn their names, that would have been too much, but still. It's crap.

Katniss could have survived on her own. She could have gone a totally different route and stood up with her grief and pursued anyone! Gale especially. She could have sought the answers to her questions and solved that mystery. Shit, there could have been a 4th book! But no. Instead, everything is wrapped up in a nice little bow and spoon fed to us..

I understand this is Young Adult but there were far more powerful themes at work, all of which could be explored. Collins' style for the first book was amazing, and "Catching Fire" was a bit slower but the twists were appropriate. But for all of the questions raised, I fear that Collins may have prematurely ended what could have been an even longer, more epic series. I think that she was shown that each of the books would become a movie and wrote the ending of "Mockingjay" thus. Instead of bringing the reader into the story, the action sequences were so fast you had to read it twice. Suzanne, you're not writing a screenplay, you're writing a book. Stay there. Also, re-examine your plot holes and fill them. Finnick's reveal most certainly would have sent shockwaves, what of it? One sentence for the fact that Annie gave birth? Really? And Katniss was supposed to be friendly with her? Gale's plot line? Haymitch??! Far too many loose ends...

Nuria I don't like the end. They have children so it's suposed to be a happy ending. Why are sons always the solution for everything? Do they have them just to have a reason to keep leaving? That's too sad.

I think a 4th book would have been too much. Most of the major events were done. So, what would have been the point of doing a 4th one if nothing was going to happen?

message 48: by Dj (new) - rated it 4 stars

Dj In my opinion the end was the best part of the book. I would hate the books if the serie ended with "everthing is fine, there are only nice people and that will continue for the rest of their lifes", because life isn't that way. No matter how many wars you fight, no matter how many bad people have died, there will always be someone with an evil and cruel mind. Katniss realise that when she sees that the new president is neither a nice person.
People don't leave war with a perfect mental state, Katniss neither. They have seen too many horror and wear too many scars to live like nothing is wrong.
I don't think it is a satisfying end, but it is certainly realistic. It is sad you don't like a realistic end, but I like it anyway.

I had no problem with the ending because in the series she never spared the lives of anyone to move the story along. She created a world far from a fairy tale. But mockingjay was just an atrocious read in my opinion for other reasons

David, "sh*t" and "f*ck" are from Old German and Old Norse, not French.
