All of Austen's have complex plots with deep meanings - classic books! Not chick flick at all haha!! Let us know how it goes!!

Its great that all Austen's are free!!

I've actually got to agree with you Kim! I'm also in the tiny minority of women - who perhaps was raised with a more feminist complex - and I am quite complicated with boys. I think it is appealing for there to be equality in a relationship :)

But... Mr Darcy had flaws too. Just because he said some things about Elizabeth does not make him a bad person. He was deemed proud and arrogant, but really nobody knew what was really going on inside. You need to understand Mr Darcy. He didn't want to be hurt again. Then he opened up his heart to love Elizabeth..... he was just soo sweet after that. gihdeg8owyetndsgjisd89gu39tpjdhgklhsdy

Kim-Lost-In-A-Book lol

I find it so funny that people are constantly trying to change my mind about Mr. Darcy. I don't care for the story.

I just don't understand why people have such a problem with that. It's perfectly fine that you don't like Harry Potter, or The Hunger Games or Twilight. But I can't dislike Pride & Prejudice. It's just so funny and ironic to me LOL

message 410: by [deleted user] (new)

Meh I was replying to Sam's comment.
(I did like the Hunger Games trilogy, myself. I've also read the Twilight books. *looks around guiltily*)
:)

Kim-Lost-In-A-Book oh and I wasn't directing my comment to anyone in particular, Cari. I apologize if that's how it appeared. That was not my intent at all.

It was just another thought I had on the topic :-)

ps I also read and loved The Hunger Games, but have not read Twilight and have no intention of reading it. lol

Nice one Cari! I agree!

I am not trying to persuade you to like him - I'm not keen on Hunger Games and HP. And as I said before, each to their own :)
I find it strange as I am such a huge Jane fan, but it would be the same if I was talking to a massive hunger games fan.

message 413: by Kim-Lost-In-A-Book (last edited Nov 09, 2012 06:35AM) (new)

Kim-Lost-In-A-Book lol okay.

let me rephrase.. lol okay, I get that. :-)

I can tell you if we ever had a discussion on a book that I loved and you didn't I would never argue with you as to why you should change your mind - I would offer you the same courtesy you have me :-)

I also should point out that this group isn't the only group of people I know who are shocked and/or appalled that I don't like P&P LOL. It's just truly funny to me how astonished people are when they find out that there are people who don't like the story LOL. and yes, I know that there are people who are like that no matter what book we're talking about. If it's a book they LOVE they have a hard time accepting that others don't love it. It's human nature I suppose. We often feel like we have to defend ourselves when we really don't. Just like we all did here in this discussion :-)

Truee. I have done that more than once... a friend and I had an hour long argument on a book once. And even now if we even mention the author, we get into another (fun but defensive) argument about it. :}

I know it's a wonderful book and once you read one Jane Austen you will have to read the rest of her books.

Kim-Lost-In-A-Book WE CAN TELL YOU'RE HYPER WITH ALL THE CAPS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;-) LOL

We had a wonderful family day yesterday with the children. Played board games, watched a show, had pizza. Then tons of music with lots of singing and dancing in the kitchen.

Today we're going to the V&A Museum (The Victoria & Albert Museum).

I hope you all have a wonderful day.

Kim-Lost-In-A-Book Carol wrote: "How was the V&A museum?!"

Carol it was awesome!! Of all the museums we've been to here in London, it's my favorite. I loved the variety of the exhibits.

Thanks for asking :-)

message 436: by Carol (new)

Carol (goodreadscomcarolann) | 214 comments If you could pick one as your favorite, which would it be?

Kim-Lost-In-A-Book One of the exhibits?? oh wow that's a bit harder. I loved the fashion exhibit, the jewelry exhibit and the Hindu/Asian religious/culture exhibit.

I think maybe the Jewelry one was my favorite, it's so interesting to see how jewelry has changed over the years, the so many different styles from different countries and eras and yet how so much of it has stayed the same as well.

Kim-Lost-In-A-Book I took a lovely nap today - I love naps lol

My husband and I are going to see the play Les Miserables tonight.

message 444: by Carolyn (new)

Carolyn (caroheartsbooks) | 897 comments yeah! but isnt it really sad?

message 445: by Carol (new)

Carol (goodreadscomcarolann) | 214 comments Les Miserables is a story about broken dreams, love, courage, sacrifice and redemption. It is a timeless testament of the survival of the human spirit.

Quick summary:
* 1815 Paris: Napoleon’s empire was defeated; time of political turmoil;
* huge social change throughout Europe as people moved away from the countryside and into the city (Industrial Revolution).
* Between 1800 and 1825 the population of Paris doubled to one million which caused horrendous social problems (sewage, lack of food, housing, prostitution).
* Hugo wrote about the misery and poverty and how it destroyed lives. But he also looked deeply into his characters to find goodness in every human heart.

Hugo was a Christian and even though he rejected the church later in life, in his last will he wrote --

I leave 50 000 francs to the poor.
I want to be buried in their hearse.
I refuse funeral orations of all churches.
I beg a prayer to all souls.

I believe in God.

(btw -- this is my favorite book!)

My friend was in production of les Mis and it was really sad and intense to watch. I much prefer light hearted ones, or even ones which are sort of serious but not as deep as Les Mis (like phantom of the opera) its a good show don't get me wrong but not my type of thing. Glad you enjoyed it though :)
