Ahhh...my biggest FAIL! I really dislike sending books back to the library unread (only to have to re-order!:) Not happenin' this time! And....glad you're liking the Princess Bride! Hope it's as fun as the flick!

Jennifer (gxeninjo) | 53 comments So far I have read "The Wonderful Wizard of OZ" and finally saw "The Wizard of Oz" yesterday, which I remember seeing once as a child for this challenge. I also read "A wrinkle in Time" and will probably watch the movie via Netflix streaming tomorrow. So far I'm about 70 pages into "Interview with the Vampire". I finally got to see them get off the plantation so hopefully the story will take off soon.

The Wizard of Oz has been my favorite movie since I was five (many moons ago)!!!

message 55: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (gxeninjo) | 53 comments I didn't like it when I was younger Denise, probably because it was too different from what I was used to, but I really enjoyed it this time. My sister saw part of it during her last week of school, so we rented the movie so she could finish it. Luckily I had the book from the library for the dusty bookshelf challenge, so I was able to finish it right before we saw the film. I didn't remember most of it, and the book is very different from the movie, but both are good, though of course one does some things better than the other. After seeing the film now that I'm older I see get a lot of references other media has had to this film. I didn't realize the impact the movie had. It sure was an eye opener.

I'm not sure "Interview" really ever...umm picks up! I know there were parts where it was more interesting..and I was turning pages frantically...but..hmmm...I have to admit, I'm enjoying The Vampire Lestat quite a bit better!

Oh, and I LOVE LOVE LOVE Wizard of Oz! (the movie...I've never read the book...GASP! Looks like I need to add another one to my TBR:)

I enjoyed A Wrinkle in Time...never saw the flick, though?

Yay! How many other books are you reading with that? I know I've seen at least one..I think two others??? Great job!

message 58: by Stefan (new)

Stefan Yates (stefan31) | 137 comments I usually have three or four going at once. At the moment I'm also reading The Gunslinger (The Dark Tower, #1) by Stephen King The Gunslinger, The Forever Girl Sophia's Journey (Forever Girl, #1) by Rebecca Hamilton The Forever Girl, and The Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane The Red Badge of Courage.

Yeah, I know, I have a problem! ;)

message 59: by Ruth (new)

Ruth | 87 comments I listed Feast of Crows as my Dusty page to screen, but I could have also listed "Great Expectations." Next, I plan on reading something Sherlock Holmes, which would also qualify. Jeremy Brett was FANTASTIC! Robert Downey, Jr. isn't bad, either. :)

message 60: by Elaine (new)

Elaine (lanybum) Looking through my recently reads I have a couple of unexpected page to screen reads this month.

I read The Call Of The Weird by Louis Theroux recently and then was very pleased to discover that they were showing the show that related to some of these 'catch-ups' on BBC last week. That was unexpected and a bit of an eye opener.

Also read A Farewell to Arms which has had several adaptations. I've never actually watched any of them though! The book was interesting but disappointing.

Next was Empire of the Sun which I really loved. There is a movie by Stephen Spielberg based on this, I think. There's actually an interview in the back of the edition I have which mentions the movie. I am trying to hunt it down (cheaply).

Finally I'm now reading The Crimson Petal and the White. It's a huge beast of a book but I'm enjoying it. 'Enjoying' possibly isn't the right word as it's a seedy, grubby look at victorian london in all it's filty guises. This was very recently shown as a TV series and I liked the show so finally catching up with the book.

Out of these 4 only A Farewell to Arms and Empire of the Sun are on my 'dusty book shelf'.

Stefan Yates (stefan31) | 137 comments Princess Bride Update: Buttercup and her motley band of captors have ascended the Cliffs of Insanity with the Man in Black close on their heels! The crazy Sicilian is about to untie the rope and send their pursuer hurtling down the cliffs to his death!!

Pretty great book so far, fortunately/unfortunately, not much variation compared to the film. However, the part with Fezzik rhyming everything is NOT in the book, Goldman must have come up with that piece of comic brilliance when writing the script.

"Stop that rhyming now, I mean it!"
"Anybody want a peanut?"

CLASSIC!

I definitely also recommend the book The Wizard of Oz, and especially if you can get a copy with the original illustrations! (The picture below is of the beautiful facsimile version I have.) It is, as Jennifer said, very different in places than the movie (or is is mainly that it just has a lot more stuff in it?), so there is a lot to discover. And, it was just the first in a long series of Oz books (although I haven't read the others since I was a kid).

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (Oz, #1) by L. Frank Baum

Empire of the Sun is a good movie, and stars a 12-year-old Christian Bale.

Stefan Yates (stefan31) | 137 comments Princess Bride update: Ask and you shall receive! No sooner had I said that there was not much variation from the film and that Fezzik's rhyming was not present, when lo and behold, I get background stories on both Inigo and Fezzik AND many specific mentions to Fezzik's love of rhyming. (Still no peanut line, but hey, I think that my wants were answered pretty swiftly.) The back-stories themselves are enough for me to be thrilled that I decided to read this one.

April | 570 comments Ok...I finished the challenge...well quasi finished? I did "Interview with the Vampire". I enjoyed the book...and I liked the movie when I was a teenager...but I couldn't finish it this time! I tried, I really did...I sat down with my husband and popped it in the dvd player. I know the book talked about all the blood...and my reason for not being able to finish the movie...is bizarre given that it IS a Vampire movie...but I just couldn't handle all the 'blood sucking!" I know, right! But...the book had so much more substance to it..and the movie tried to follow it pretty closely . . . but I can say Brad Pitt and Christian Slater have improved their acting MUCH!

OK...so this may not count for finishing the challenge..and I'm good with that:) I got another book off my list (and it lead me to another, even better book...The Vampire Lestat, in my opinion is better than Interview) So...it all ended good! So, I finished in the sense...that I've come to the conclusion, I'm not finishing the movie! :) Tada!

First of all, congrats on finishing the challenge. (Even though you're a wimpy girl who couldn't finish the movie 'cause of all the icky stuff!) Second, YAY, Lestat! I'm glad that you enjoyed it and did not send it back to the library unread!

Ugh...I'm am that wimpy gal, aren't I?!? :) It's funny...I used to love all the horror..the gore, but now I still like the horror, but just the brainy aspect of it. Michael and Jason just chop people up {boring!}... I like the stuff that makes ya think.. and quite honestly, since I've had kids...I know I'm a total and complete pansy when it comes to horror and children...I think that's where I had to just stop...when they got to Claudia...I couldn't stomach it much anymore! OH well...guess that's the reason I love books...cause my brain can skip over the not so pretty stuff and dwell in those fun areas.... (and really...even though I knew Tom Cruise played Lestat...He's no Lestat! and that may be ruined since I was in the middle of reading Lestat...when watching...He's grown so much in my opinion since Interview! Anyway...bla bla bla...Yup, I'm a flower...hope I didn't disappoint ya too much! Now...I think it's time to move away from the bloodsuckers and on to some elves and such!

message 70: by Stefan (new)

Stefan Yates (stefan31) | 137 comments It is a pretty thick one. Looks like you can get a copy pretty cheap on Amazon.com.

message 71: by April (new)

April | 570 comments ...or:) I'm heading to my mama's this weekend..I think she owns a copy..perhaps just steal hers! ;) Now..since you've read this, Stefan..I have a ?. I've read there is a new version that isn't any good (now I'm not sure I'm understanding correctly...it may just be in the version that is the trilogy..in one book?) But, I want to make sure I grab a 'right' edition...any comments/ suggestions?

message 72: by Stefan (new)

Stefan Yates (stefan31) | 137 comments I am not aware that there is more than one version. Perhaps the omnibus version doesn't contain the illustrations that the individual versions do, which would be a true shame to miss out on as they are fairly good. I guess that could also be referring to further volumes in the series as a whole. I haven't read much past the original trilogy though and would like to re-read them before I continue on with the rest of the series.

Stefan - That's too funny :) Inigo's back story is my favorite. I read Princess Bride a long time ago but I think I remember a lot of differences in the story even if some of the lines were the same in the movie and the book.

I love seeing all the books everyone is reading for this challenge. So many of them I didn't even know were made into movies!

message 74: by Thalia (new)

Thalia (thaliaanderson) | 359 comments Okay, so I finished Fellowship of the Ring awhile ago, but I still have to find time to watch the movie! I just got back from camp a few days ago, and was studying for finals before that, so I didn't have three hours to just hang out! (:

But maybe tonight or tomorrow night! I'm really excited!

Well, if your mother has it, definitely you should borrow hers! I've read and enjoyed the first eight books published in the series, and there are still more... However, I was thinking that maybe what you had heard might have something to do with Brooks' Word and Void trilogy, which is set way before the other books, and is very different. I think it's supposed to set up how the world ended up in the state it was when Shannara started. I read the first book in that series, and really didn't like it, so I haven't read the other two, which I own. Some day I'll give it another try.

message 76: by Stefan (new)

Stefan Yates (stefan31) | 137 comments You could be right, Denise. Timeline-wise, Running With the Demon would be book 1. I too have read only the first one and was not too thrilled so haven't moved on to number two or three which I too own. Seems like we both had the same reaction.

message 77: by April (last edited Jun 26, 2012 05:00AM) (new)

April | 570 comments SCORE! Mama owns the first three:) Looks like I've got a good load of reading I'll be coming home with. And...it does appear that it's in the book that releases as the "trilogy" that the complaints are about. It's missing some of the illustrations and there were some other issues with it...but, I'll be getting the original three...yippee!;)

OH..and I won't have much to say about it YET...but I'll be starting a thread for Shannara, so I can give this thread back to what it belongs! :) Sorry!
Now, I've heard a few complaints that it's just LotR with different characters...so we'll see...I'm totally looking forward to it, and honestly, if it IS LotR again...I can't say that would make me unhappy...I've got a good feeling about this read! :)

message 78: by Stefan (new)

Stefan Yates (stefan31) | 137 comments I know there is no real deadline for this challenge, but the end of June is approaching fast and furiously, and I still have over 100 pages of The Princess Bride left PLUS I need to watch the movie!!! I'd better stop slacking off and get to work!

message 79: by April (new)

April | 570 comments You can do it! You've got 4 full days left...and Saturday night sounds like a fun night for a great movie! :) It's only 25 pages a day...you can do it...Go Stefan, go Stefan!

It seemed to me like Running with the Demon was almost a different subgenre of fantasy. The things I love about the Shannara books just weren't there.

Woo-hoo!!! I reread the first trilogy a few years ago, and loved it all over again. I can see the comparisons with LotR, but I wouldn't complain about it. Like you said, that's a good thing! It's a quest with a band of assorted companions, but the quality is there, and Brooks' world and characters stand on their own. I know you'll enjoy it!!!

message 84: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (gxeninjo) | 53 comments I just finished watching "A Wrinkle in Time" and while the movie is visually interesting, it did not do the best at following the book, but I knew it wouldn't anyway when they didn't mention why Meg's dad had left the family in the first two minutes, just that he was gone. I'm also halfway through watching "Interview with the Vampire", which I will probably finish tomorrow. Is it just me, or is it a really quiet movie? I had to put in earphones, and half the time the characters are whispering so it doesn't help much. I'm also halfway through reading "A Clockwork Orange" and having a hard time with the language, it very much reads like ti was written in a rush. I've been reading only about 30 pages of that a day, so I'll be done on the 29th, and will probably watch the movie on the 30th, which will hopefully be more understandable, and since I'll be done with some library books I should have more time to work on "Fellowship of the Rings" for the last month's challenge as well as Emma. That is the problem with the library, their books have much earlier due dates than the books on our shelves. :)

message 85: by April (new)

April | 570 comments Wow, Jennifer! Way to go:) And yes, for the half of Interview with the Vampire that I was able to stomach...we had to have the volume control right by us...because it was up so high..then all the sudden, cue music..it was blaring! Movies like that drive me nuts...(and we even have a "speech" mode on our tv...but it didn't help with that one! I've read Wrinkle in Time, but never watched the movie...may have to give it a try..visually intersting would be good..that's how I imagined stuff going on in the book! Well..great job!

Go Stefan and Jennifer! That's cool that you finished the challenge.

For this month I wanted to read Romeo and Juliet while watching the movie version with Leo and Claire Danes. I'm going along and highlighting the stuff that got cut from the movie. Then I'm going to blog about it. Hopefully I can finish it today! It's not technically on my dusty shelf because I read it 2 years ago, but the dusty book I'm reading right now isn't a movie.

message 91: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (gxeninjo) | 53 comments Okay, just finished watching "A Clockwork Orange" which is a better movie than I thought it would be, and much easier to understand than the book, and pretty faithful to it. It helped me understand the slang much better at least. Now I'm all ready for the July challenge. :)

LiLaboti | 70 comments pride and prejudice...check...!!!

i hope my finishing the challenge on july 5th would still count... for i have been promoted to the status of a mom lately...21st of last month... :D:D:D (yayyy..i am a mother to an adorable, handsome healthy boy...!!!) and there's no structure and virtually no framework to my formless days. i am still glad tht i finished the book..and also thank the group for the challenge.. putting off this book was one of my guilt complexes i was dealing with..:P (i also successfully put off P&P for the Jane Austen month on April)

the movie was a bore for me...except for the little improvisation on the "you have bewitched me body and soul" part.. that part in the book seemed like a discussion in a classroom about what the hero and the heroine had felt all along which was pretty painful...and another thumbs up for a very handsome Darcy.. ;) (Mathew McFayden)..

this was a great challenge.. had fun... :)
