Kandice Fiona-stop beating yourself up! If you want to look at your book buying as an addiction... we'll treat you as an addict, forgive your failures, and encourage your success! (Personally, think you're crazy. I would NEVER swear off buying books!)Hop back on that wagon and hold on for dear life! Possibly hide your credit card?

message 202: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Ugh... I couldn't buy books if I wanted to. I'm so broke I can't even pay attention! I just got paid today, and my ENTIRE FRIGGIN' CHECK is gone already. GONE. Poof! Like dust in the wind.

It's a good thing I stocked up on food at the beginning of the month.

*grumble*

message 203: by Kandice (new)

Kandice Well, that sucks! I know I always came up with crazy recipes to use whatever was left when we had to shop once a month. There is a website where you input the ingredients you have, and...Voila! Something new to try! You can put some things that don't seem to go together too. It still works.

Lynlee4 | 117 comments I couldn't help myself and bought another one yesterday (I'm up to 6 this year). Found The Poisonwood Bible for 50cents at the library bookstore - would have been foolish to pass it up.....right??

Yes, that would have been a shame to pass up! Poisonwood Bible is an amazing book and for 50 cents! - They were practically begging you to buy it.

message 211: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments Fiona, you aren't forgiven but I won't chase you anymore. Whenever i am jsut going to check something on amazon, I finish 'checking' hours later and with a huge wish list..strangely enough having more pages than before!
By the way, do you have a wish list on amazon? I adore it that my friend has hers on it. can always surprise her with presents from it or make my list longer that way!

message 212: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Gift cards aren't excluded! I have about $50 remaining on a B&N gift card, but I've controlled the urge. Think about how you will feel when you can go and buy a new book knowing that you don't have a mountain of them to read still!

Think of the sense of achievement! Think of the reward for all the hard work and will-power you will have exhibited! Be strong Fiona! The gift card isn't going anywhere!

message 213: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) *sigh* Fiona... might I remind you that this was YOUR idea? Look at you, breaking your own promise just because you have a gift card. Pfft! That's what I say. Let me remind you of your own words...

And I quote:

"I have so many unread books at home it is ridiculous. I'm going to have one last christmas splurge and then NO MORE!

I also want to limit the number of books I get from the library - because I just need to get through the books I have already got. I want to try new reads, I do and probably will because I won't regret it I know.

But I have 256 books that I own, that are unread and it is scandalous.

Now, for those who feel the same way, who must not buy any more books (not just for financial reasons) - join me.

You must repeat after me...

"I promise to abstain from purchasing new books until my to-be-read pile is looking more respectable and I must read the books I already own!"

Otherwise we're all doomed and I am going to be kicked out of my own bedroom by my own books."

message 214: by Emma (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) | 2389 comments Still no book buying for this Emu!

WOOOOTTT.

message 215: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I know... it's hard. But if you start buying books now just because you can do it without spending "real" money, then you will never whittle down your TBR pile. You don't want that hanging over your head, do you? (Not literally, of course, that would be dangerous!)

You have to be strong. Emma's doing it (Yay Emma!), so you can do it too!

Don't lose that gift card now. You'll need it to go splurge and reward yourself when you've made it through this year!

message 216: by Emma (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) | 2389 comments I have 100 dollars in Chapters giftcards.

It is SO HARD to resist. But I'm doing it.

GOOOOOOOO BOOK ADDICTS!

message 217: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) *shakes head* You're hopeless! haha... Go on and buy your silly book then, but don't come crying when your TBR list is in quadruple digits...

message 218: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I have a gift card too that I'm not spending. It's possible! You can do it!

message 219: by Emma (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) | 2389 comments IT IS!

Just busy yourself, think about all the pretty books on your bookshelves.

It's possible IT IS!

message 220: by Emma (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) | 2389 comments What about a magazine?

message 221: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Why can't you just tell said people that you are saving it until you have read the other hundreds of books you already own? There's no shame in that! They will be proud of you for sticking to your goal!

Or are they trying to sabotage your goals? If that is the case, who needs em? Buy nothing just to spite them!

message 222: by Becky (last edited Jan 17, 2009 05:40PM) (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Free books are off-limits too... hahaha...

Oh you should just buy it and stop beating yourself up over it. But really, you shouldn't because you promised yourself and you've already caved once, but if it's that big a deal, just do it. I won't say any more about it. :)

message 223: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) You shouldn't feel guilty for not spending money on something you are only buying on a whim, and you shouldn't feel guilty for not breaking your own promise!

Oh, right... I was all "saying no more about it". *zips lips*

message 224: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 1000 comments I am adding books to my TBR list like crazy today! It's like shopping without actually buying the books! (We'll see how long that actually lasts though.)

message 225: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I think a DVD and pens is a good purchase, if you are truly worried the giver may want to know what you got. If you are using that as an excuse however...

message 226: by Kandice (new)

Kandice Okay, I can't give up buying books, even if 90% of my purchases are used, however... I am giving up dry-cleaning. I haven't had any clothes cleaned since 01.01. I am never honest with myself about how much it actually costs, so I am going to see how much I save. I am going to go as long as you guys with the books!!!! That way I can participate----sort of;)

Don't want to but have to admit that i also sometimes feel bad just not buying a book.
Fiona, don't go and look for a book. Use it when it is needed!!!! And yes, you did pass the line once.....try not to. And if it does happen, only take one book! Really need to be in town?

message 230: by Maureen (new)

Maureen Fiona ~

Sorry, this is a bit off topic, but is the Jane Eyre version you referred to the one with Timothy Dalton?

message 231: by Maureen (new)

Maureen That's still my fave version, too, as well as my Mom's. Up until a couple of years ago, she still had the VHS version, which was literally deteriorating, and she couldn't find it on DVD. The horror! I ordered it for her from Amazon for either her birthday or Christmas (can't remember which); I was the favorite child that year! :)
And I completely agree on your assessment of Dalton as Rochester.

Lisa Julianna (lisajulianna) | 1053 comments I really should join you all that are not buying anymore books....Our financial situation got worse over this last week. I need to focus on reading what I have on my shelves. LOL

I hope I can be good...hehe

message 233: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Good luck Lisa! Don't let yourself be tempted by naughty book-buying Fiona! ;)

message 234: by Esther (new)

Esther (eshchory) | 575 comments I have just counted and I have 100+ books on my main bookshelf - all unread. I have actually 'double stacked' that shelf so that almost doubles the count.
Then there is the box of books from a friend who just passed away and a small stack in the corner from a friend who moved - no actually that is two smallish stacks :0)

I think I really need to join you guys.

I have a suggestion for Fiona. I recently couldn't resist an omnibus edition of Douglas Adam's 5-book trilogy on sale. So I had it gift wrapped and am not allowed to open it until I read at least half of my own unread books.

message 235: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Esther, I love Douglas Adams... Good choice! I have the "Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide" which includes:

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
The Restaurant at the End of the Universe
Life, The Universe, and Everything
So Long, and Thanks for all the Fish
Young Zaphod Plays it Safe (14 page short story)
Mostly Harmless

message 236: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I have that too! Is it the one that's "leather" bound from Barnes and Nobles? I also have a few others from there.(Austin, Shakespeare, Poe...) I really like them because they get all of one author together and they look so pretty. (grins sheepishly)

message 237: by Melissa (new)

Melissa (melissaconrad) While in Dublin, I went to the CUTEST little bookstore, and I didn't buy a thing!

I was seriously THISCLOSE to buying an Ishiguro, but I held strong. Thinking of you guys! :)

message 238: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Yeah... "Leather"! Or, "leather-ish". It's got the gold edged paper, and the bookmark ribbon and all that jazz.

I have this one of Poe's work too: The Complete Tales and Poems of Edgar Allan Poe. I just thought it was pretty. I couldn't resist.

And then, I got this one off Paperback Swap: The Complete Signet Classic Shakespeare which is old but great!

message 239: by Kandice (new)

Kandice "Leather-ish" I swear, Becky, you never cease to give me a giggle!!!! That's why I added the quotes, but I like your word better.

message 245: by Jill (last edited Jan 21, 2009 04:59PM) (new)

Jill (wanderingrogue) | 329 comments I bought one book I can defend and one other one today. The defensible one was a new copy of Good Omens to replace my old one. It had the added bonus of having new interviews with Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett at the end of the book.

The non-defensible one was Steven Pinker's The Blank Slate, which I've just flat out been wanting to read.

I figured if Fiona can go on a buying splurge... ;)

message 246: by Jill (new)

Jill (wanderingrogue) | 329 comments I'm going to have to resort to bringing a sack lunch and sitting in the faculty and staff lounge if I'm going to avoid that bookshop. It's a very tiny bookshop. Just perfect for browsing before returning to work after lunch.

message 247: by Kandice (last edited Jan 21, 2009 05:12PM) (new)

Kandice A brown bag lunch can be very nice. Especially if it saves you ridicule from GR people!!!! You'll make new friends in there, too. Maybe they read. Or you can just do the Hail Mary's and Our Father's and not worry about it.

message 248: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I still have not bought, borrowed, stolen, or otherwise acquired any books! *pats myself on the back* :)

message 249: by Kandice (new)

But, at the rate I'm going, I may just finish early! What happens then?
