Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I don't think that this discussion is a good motivation to NOT buy books... :P

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I don't actually know what the yellow card means, I don't follow soccer (or football, if you prefer) but I thought it sounded ref-like. O_o

Leila (justsortofreading) I'm babysitting this whole weekend (away) and I only brought one book with me because I'm a slow reader and didn't think I'd have time for two books. However, I'm almost done and I'm pretty sure I will have plenty of time tomorrow to read as well and I'm so tempted to go to the bookshop which is a 5 minutes walk away from here and BUY ANOTHER BOOK so I can have something else to read once I've finished this one (I'm tryyyyyying to read slower so it'll last) but I shouldn't because I barely have any money left (and by barely I mean super-broke) until salary day and either way, I've told myself to only buy one book a month (the rest - libraries!!!) and I've already pre-ordered a book which is waiting to be bought and picked up....

AHH! Why didn't I bring two books? Why?

Timothy Pilgrim (oldgeezer) | 107 comments Go on, be a devil Fiona, Terry Pratchett is the headline speaker. There will be several other authors on our stand both days. There is always Frome on the 11th of July, there is a cracking line up at the seminar I'm comparing, including two front runners for the new Brit Writers awards at the O2 arena three days after Frome. Sue Rule[Cloak of Magic:] and Dave Elliot [Clan:] both likely winners in their Genres how can you resist!!

When I go to library sales, I always think "I'm just going to by 10 books, that extra twenty is just for coffee and donuts afterwards". Cut to me 49 books later and an extra twenty poorer.

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) My library's book sale starts on June 19th! :D

message 1167: by Alisha Marie (new)

Alisha Marie (endlesswonderofreading) | 715 comments My library has two sales a year and this year I've been pretty good in not splurging too much anywhere else and mostly limiting books to library sales only. I've only had one splurge since April's library sale, not counting paperbackswap, so I think I'm doing pretty good.

Adrienne Teague (ateague) | 409 comments Ok, does it count if you buy a book for someone else? I always give books as graduation gifts, and let me tell you, this year I've been buying a lot of books.

message 1169: by Becky (new)

message 1173: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly Cain (kimberlycain) I'm just glad to see that soooo many other people buy & put on the shelf! I've learned that it really works well for me, though. Sometimes a book jumps off the store shelf & into my arms, then I take it home & set it aside. For a long while, I wondered what my problem was! Then, I realized that just because I buy it now doesn't mean it's intended to be read now. I might not ever find it again...really!

So, it's happened many times that later (even years later), I come upon a book that I started & put down (or that I never started at all) & it's the perfect time for it. I believe the book knows that from the start! ;-)

message 1174: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly Cain (kimberlycain) Fiona, you are right on target about the timing of books & the way they have a life of their own. It was a funny thing that while writing my own book, it was mine. Once I got the shipment back from the printer, opened the first box & held it in my hands, everything changed. I realized it wasn't mine; it had its own life. It was going to go where it wanted & when it wanted to go, to visit the people whose lives it was meant to be a part of. It was an amazing experience.

So art is energy...& that means some of the books on our shelves are dead or dying because we're not allowing them to move to the next place they're meant to go. We should look over our shelves periodically because there will be books that tell us they're ready to move on, just as they told us they wanted to come home with us at one time - even if we never read them. Maybe they were intended to move through us, instead of just to us!

Jo, it might help to think of the excess books you can give away as a way to make room for more love in your life & a way to give love to others. Keep that energy alive & moving! This makes it easier for me to say goodbye. ;-)

message 1175: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I'm sorry, is there such a thing as "excess" books?

message 1176: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I really try to keep only my favorite books, and classics if I enjoyed the story, and YA books that I think any future demons children I have might enjoy.

Other than that - OUT WITH IT!

Goodness, I wish I could be as ruthless as you Becky! I only get rid of books I really detest, which isn't many.

message 1178: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly Cain (kimberlycain) @Fiona "60 books have been mentioned in this topic. Bad. There should be NO books mentioned."

Hopefully, Fiona, you're not referring to my last post. That was meant as a story about my life, not about my book (since the book itself isn't mentioned). I write a lot about life & I can't much extricate my experiences if I'm being authentic. If you were referring to that, my sincerest apologies for any offense. Hopefully, the right message will be received - that's what was intended. :-)

Nah, that's not what she meant. She's saying that in a book ban thread we shouldn't be mentioning books (aka temptation)! Edit to add: she was referring to the "Books mentioned in this topic" section, actually.

There was nothing in your post that was offensive. :)

message 1180: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly Cain (kimberlycain) Ha! Funny! As an author with a recently released book, there are a lot of places on GoodReads where the anti-spam police are in full force (& understandably so!). I'm just trying to make sure I'm following threads "properly"! It was funny the way the actual admin on GoodReads termed certain author behaviors when doing book giveaways. They said, if you email everyone who signed up to win your book, you'll "never be invited back for cake again." I thought that was a great way to make the point! ;-)

Thanks for clarification, ladies.

message 1181: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I've seen that in the giveaway rules, and I always get a little chuckle out of it. The Goodreads staff here is great, and funny too. :)

Lori's rules take precedence in this group, but they are easy to follow, and your post didn't break them. She doesn't mind if you advertise your book/blog/whatever, she just asks that you participate in other threads and get to know the group first, and then "advertise" in the correct place - which if you're doing a real advertisement or whatever would be the "Promote Your (whatever) Here" folder. But it's perfectly fine to mention your book in other threads if it's relevant too.

:)

message 1182: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) NO! You can do it Jo... Remember how many books you have to read... You can be strong. I know it. :D

message 1183: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Yes... I know. They are devious little tempters. You can be strong though. They are not going anywhere. They want you to feel like you need to own them RIGHTTHISSECOND or they will *POOF* out of existence, but they won't. I promise.

Be strong.

message 1184: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) I feel your pain Jo! I'm coming to the realization that I need to go on a book ban. I have an addiction to library booksales and borrowing from the library. I don't consider it an unhealthy addiction, but space wise it's starting to become an issue.

message 1185: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) I think I will, but uh, I have 2 book sales coming up that I plan on going to. LOL! Yeah, it's bad. :/

Okay so I one this weekend and the Trumbull one next weekend and after that no more till the next booksale which is in July. I think that will give me time to reduce my TBR. I joined the HF challenge and many of the books I'm using are my own so that will also help to motivate me.

message 1186: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) I don't think I can quit cold turkey. :/ I've tried and it's never worked. I will limit how many books I'm allowed though...that's a good compromise, right? Then I will have a month or so to clear out my shelves until the next splurge sale. That will be the final big sale in the area so after that I will only read my own and the few I get from the library.

message 1187: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) Yes, no excuses! ....until I find the next sale.

Just kidding.

no books until september? you have amazing self control! my brother makes fun of me because if its the weekend my mom and i either buy shoes or books! but I am going to take comfort and courage from everyone here and try to not buy (and by that i mean talk mommy or daddy into buying) any books until the end of june. my birthday is in july, so once july starts its fair game!

message 1189: by Becky (new)

Larissa | 6 comments Last night I discovered an entire box of books I haven't read that I had forgotten about. I need to make this pledge before my husband divorces me.

"I promise to abstain from purchasing new books until my to-be-read pile is looking more respectable and I must read the books I already own!"

message 1198: by Jackie (last edited Jun 05, 2010 04:31PM) (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) So I am happy to report that I did not go to today's booksale. :D

I started cleaning yesterday and uh, kept finding hidden books everywhere. Since I don't have shelving I pretty much cram them anywhere there is space. It helped me realize how much exactly I've crammed so I'm going to abstain. I might go to next week's sale though still not quite sure yet. However, if I go I'm taking a bag full of donated books with me so it will help even out.

message 1199: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) Um, no. I've been afraid too. Well that's not true. I did count them up once when I was at like 50 and then I started keeping track of them on a spread sheet and in GR, but I've had some recent purchases that I've forgotten to add so my numbers are all off. I know I'm well above 100...just don't know how well :) LOL!

message 1200: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) Oh and please don't think that my books are unloved or the pages are ruined by my cramming. hehe. I do stack them neatly, but they are hidden in odd places....like TV cabinet or in bags in my closet and under the bed or in my bureau or desk...
