silvia | 282 comments I'm tryinh to beahev so good I've decided to safe my gift coupon for when I finished reading all the books i've got on christmas or to buy a book for the monthly read were 8 following the only one book a month rule).

i even added to the rule, i can only buy a new book if the one bought in the previus month was read.

and I'm thinking on skiping the guernesey group read. payne me as it must. I will only order after finishing jonatahn strange and if in time to read it in january.

happyly for me bookmooch doesnt count as buying books. and I still have bookcrossing. I'm going to get The Stand and Flowers for Algernon from a bookcrossing friend :)

I'm such a cheater

message 52: by Jen B (new)

Jen B (jennybee618) Fiona, I liked The Chocolate War. I hope you enjoy your last new book (at least for awhile).

bnoir, I'm a cheater, too, with PaperbackSwap. I actually just put my account on hold because it's getting crazy...I got 4 new ones in the mail yesterday, and there are still some on the way.

I have publicly thrown down the gauntlet to myself that I will not buy any more books until I have read 101 of the ones I already own. I'm doing a 101 in 1001 challenge (101 various challenges in 1001 days), and the no book buying until I've read 101 is now one of my challenges. I posted about it on my blog to let everyone know that I'm serious and to remind me to stay OUT of Barnes & Noble! (Lest I be accused of spamming and forced to circle in hell, I won't post the link, but it's on my profile if you really want to read it) Now I just need to find some willpower...I will NOT buy more books!

message 53: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Still bought none 2day as I haven't been out all day lol and I even went to library yesterday and came back with 0 books lol.

message 54: by Justine (new)

Justine (paperbackheart) My "Own but Unread" pile is actually not that intimidating because I only bought five books in the past month and have been relying mostly on PBS. I'd say I have less than 20.
I'm definitely in on the not buying anymore books (after I use my Borders coupon and except for the series I'm in the middle of)! I will still need to acquire some though, and I'm excited to start going to the library again! I haven't been since November.

message 55: by Becky (last edited Feb 25, 2009 03:46AM) (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I think PBS and BM definitely count, so I have removed all of my books from BM (taking most of my points with it to avoid temptation!) and put both accounts on hold. I'm waiting on "Neverwhere" from PBS, which has been shipped, and "Water For Elephants" which I ordered last night from B&N Online, and thats it for me.

No more library.
No more B&N. (*sob*)
No more BM or PBS, no requesting a book as a gift (but a giftcard is allowed since it can be saved), no borrowing from friends.

Nothing. Nada. Zip. Zilch. Zero.

message 56: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) Oh Justine, you just reminded me! I brought the first 2 books of the Gemma Doyle Trilogy, which I'm supposed to read in January thanks to (G)Emma. I have to buy the last one to complete the set. Then no more...I swear!!

message 57: by Jen B (new)

Jen B (jennybee618) Just out of curiosity, how many unread books does everyone have?

I'm bad...I have 143. Some have literally been on my shelf for years.

message 58: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) 111 after I get Neverwhere and Water for Elephants. (That is, if there isn't anything else hiding on my bookshelf at home.)

message 59: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) I have about 30-40 unread books and most of them were acquired for free due to my co-workers. They usually leave books for others to take in the kitchen table and I rescue them.

message 60: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments 103 plus many Agatha Christie books in French, about 30-40.

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Fiona wrote: ":( I have way too many. I feel almost like a criminal."

Don't worry Fiona, after tomorrow, you will start changing your ways! (At least as long as you have unread books in the triple digits, I mean.)

message 62: by Jen B (new)

Jen B (jennybee618) Fiona, at least they're books. There are plenty of other things people have way too many of (cars, houses, etc.) that are just crazy. But books are good...you can't ever have too many! ;)

message 65: by silvia (new)

silvia | 282 comments ok I have 63 books I've bougth myself or was offered or received via BM adding to the 86 from bookcrossing its 149.

I register all my books on bookcrossing even the PC ones, its a way for me to keep track of them. but I have a closet on the living room full of books my mum bougth me some years ago, it was a collection of classics that were sold was a bonus whit a newspaper, I know I dont want to read all these books, and dont have a clue how many they are

message 66: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments I will never start reading the read books i have at home. That would probably make me feel super happy and proud and at the same time veryyyyy bad, a bit at least....knowing that amount will get bigger and bigger.

Emma Blue (litlover) | 2389 comments Okay, I might buy Need today, help me make sure I don't buy any other books.

I wil not buy any other books. *chants*

Emma Blue (litlover) | 2389 comments Hahha Fi, I feel your pain.

I will not buy any other books!

But, I was eyeing that Tamora Pierce one.....

NO. EMMA.

message 69: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments i always find a very good excuse why I did pick up a book that I didn't wanted to.

message 70: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments On my way back home and towards the supermarket I managed to enter a bookshop. And just now I realize that that might be the reason why I prefer entering the shopping centre from the right and not the shorter way to the supermarket by entering the left. By entering the right you pass a shop called 'books now'........I forgot which book(s) but there were some greeting me when passing and turning back to say hello to them. They were okay with me leaving them to buy that too expensive kitchen paper, but I told them I will come back in 2009.....

message 71: by Emma (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) | 2389 comments P AND P EMMA, P AND P.

YOU LOVE P AND P, NO TAMORA.

Even though she is awesome! NO TAMORA.

Have fun and good luck! Monday I should start my first day at work...and I am thinking which book to buy in the next months!!!!!hahahahahahahaha.....

message 74: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments Haha, but I have been really good for the last year. I think I can count the books I bought myself on one hand! And as I can't read those more than 100 unread once that are in Belgium.....good girl I have been! I even bought only one book since coming here, 3 euros only and managed to wait till I start working! In some way I did my part last year AND now it is all up to you!

Make me proud everybody!!!! :-)

message 75: by Jackie (last edited Jan 01, 2009 08:13AM) (new)

Julianne | 314 comments "I promise to abstain from purchasing new books until my to-be-read pile is looking more respectable and I must read the books I already own!"

I was just thinking this last night as I sat in front of my poor overstuffed book shelf and wrote down all my "owned but not read" books. And here's why I'm joining in:

I usually buy my books 2-3 at a time, maybe per month, which isn't too bad. But, I recently acquired....

6 books for my birthday (Nov.)
3 books w/ a GC from my b-day
5 books for christmas
3 more with a xmas GC
6 more with a different GC

The sudden surge of new (wonderful smelling, unblemished, uncreased spine) books had given me such a rush I need to read them before they become lost in a tangle of new books and are forgotten.

But, trust me, I've sat in front of that shelf and admired my new purchases.

Plus, I think I've got a bunch of books to steal from my sister, too, which would add at least 10 (or more) books to my list.

"I promise to abstain from purchasing new books until my to-be-read pile is looking more respectable and I must read the books I already own!"

message 89: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments All bookshops here have 75% off!!!!!!

That is to help you all, because you know you would come back home with too many books after seeing books for one euro or 1.99........

message 90: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments Fiona, do come. You get a free touristical bookshop tour if you come during the weekend and for free!

Fiona - "He" can't take you until Mt TBR is gone....you'll need to always have a few on there :P

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 636 comments I decided that i can't buy any more books (minus things bought with gift cards) until half the books on my shelf in my room are read. i'm not so sure if i can do it!

message 93: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I've read 2 from my Mt. TBR already, but they were short: Tales of Beedle the Bard, (clocking in at about 30 pages if they weren't double spaced and size 14.5 font, haha), and Girl With a Pearl Earring.

Next up is Solaris, and then I can't put aside the big'un any longer, as it's necessary for me to read it this month in order to achieve 3 goals!: The Count of Monte Cristo.

message 94: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I'm really looking forward to it, but I put it off since I joined the Official Winter Challenge... I figured I should at least get myself a semi-respectable amount of points before venturing onto to such a time-suck book! ;)

message 97: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments Okay the end of day three without smoking has almost arrived... I have read that the first 72 hours is the toughest (which it has been), especially being home for the weekend (work does help!!).

I may have to give myself weekly rewards to keep this up :) arrgghh!!!

message 98: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) Congratulations Angela! Your body will thank you for this. Go reward yourself with a massage or may I say...some books?! :-)

message 99: by Angela (new)
