Karen (karenvwrites) | 112 comments I was very bad last month for book buying and i am going to strive not to buy any this month I can't promise anything if I find a good sale or bargain

message 752: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) No, I didn't buy anything but I did acquire Slaughterhouse 5 through a GR trade. But that's still good!

message 753: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Oh, I meant before, that's how I got to the 113 I had starting out! LOL

message 754: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I think it's been about 3 weeks or so since my last indiscretion. I'm pretty proud. And my bank account is a bit fatter.

message 755: by Carol (new)

Carol (caroldias) My boyfriend doesn´t let me enter the bookshop :( Yesterday he said " there´s nothing new there since the last time you´ve entered, like, last week" ¬¬

But that´s ok, I really must not buy any more books, at least until the end of the month! lol

message 756: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I almost got a book today. I was at Sam's with my grandparents and they were picking up the tab and I almost grabbed Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. But I decided against it, especially because I'm not sure I will actually like it. I've heard rave reviews but I'm just not sure I will like the story line from the descriptions I've read.

message 757: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I think that is a definite library book, Lori.

Can't remember the amount but I once bought for almsot 100pound(pound was stronger then) of books in one time.

He was really not jking. Normally he behaves very well in shops and doesn't like me to act spontaneous or crazy in shops. But I tried to get away and he jsut held on. The moments he wasn't holding my hand and noticed me going away he called me back and took my hand!

Emma Blue (litlover) | 2389 comments My friends are not helping. I'm getting book reccommendations every day from them. The FiveAwesomeYAFans are not helping. *sighs*

I want to smell new book pages again.

Help?

message 761: by Carol (new)

Carol (caroldias) Don´t ask me. We bought a book we already have yesterday lol So, don´t count on me with self-control haha

message 762: by Emma (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) | 2389 comments LOL. Self control is not my thing. Reading is.

message 763: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I'm just itching for it to be Easter so I can get the book(s) from my mom. I'm tempted to get on her Amazon account to see whether she bought one of them or both of them. But I'll try to just be surprised. I think it will be the first time in a long time that someone in my family actually bought me a book.

message 764: by JSou (last edited Mar 19, 2009 03:30PM) (new)

JSou Hey guys, I'm new and love this thread-it's hilarious! I am posting here now to admit that I also have a problem! As of today, I have 296 unread books that I own...I was horrified when I realized there were so many.

I must explain though, that in the little town I live in there's no bookstores, but an awesome thrift store that sells PB books for ten cents and HB for twenty-five cents! Could anyone else resist that?!

There is an annual book fair coming up in a couple weeks, that I just HAVE to go to, but after that, NO MORE BOOK BUYING. I swear. I'm posting this now, so that at the end of the month,if I don't come back, you guys have to do an intervention or something and drag me back! :)

message 765: by Kevin (last edited Mar 21, 2009 05:41PM) (new)

Kevin (manchesterunited) Fiona, hats off to you for starting this guilt festival! :) I feel exactly like you because I know I have waaaaaay too many unread books. I truly am crazy about the actual book purchase. I love the search at the bookstore, the smell of the new books, the promise of something great to read...I won't go count how many unread books I have because recognizing I have a problem is likely the first step to me getting "better." I am just not sure I want to be cured. I think I am hopeless on this one. I feel I am doing something exceptional when I get rid of a couple boxes of books I will never read again. How many steps are in this recovery process?
Hopelessly addicted to book sales!
Kevin

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Another trip to B&N conquered! I was there for 2-1/2 hours and bought NOTHING! Although at one point "A Thousand Splendid Suns" attached itself to my hand again... I'm beginning to think that there's a conspiracy going on.

message 767: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I went out for a late lunch/early dinner with a friend and she wanted to go to B&N, so we went. It was like a maze of temptation... Every shelf and every table held something that I wanted to read.

And then they only had one copy of "North and South", which you'll recall I recently added to my To Get list, and that almost broke me. But I prevailed. And have nothing to show for it. :(

message 768: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I don't know anyone who has it. :(

It's alright... Its on the To Get list, so when I can buy new books, or even get them from the library, I will read it. :)

message 770: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I'm still going strong with my book ban. But I haven't been in a bookstore since the ban went into effect to tempt myself.

message 771: by Valerie (new)

Valerie | 4 comments Hello group-My name is Valerie and I'm a book maniac.(Pause for group to say, "Hello Valerie"). My readaholic issues have escalated recently with the purchase of a Kindle. My operating theory when purchasing this device being, "Ah ha, now I won't buy as many physical books, I'll just limit my numbers to those available on Kindle".Sigh--that is not what has happened dear friends. Now I not only am on a first name basis with the UPS man who makes almost daily deliveries to my home from BOMC2, B & N, Amazon, Powells and half.com. Now I have almost one hundred and fifty ebooks on Kindle that remain to be read as well. I need weekly meetings to overcome this literary problem!

message 772: by Kim (new)

Kim (catmommie) This thread caught my eye when reading reviews...

I made that vow and it lasted three months. Our church has twice-yearly book fairs and for 25cents for PB's and 50cents for HC's, you can't go wrong!!

working on five boxes...no more room...I'm done until next winter.

message 773: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Well, I'm not exactly a "shining star", Fi... I've revised my ban to allow for trading, so I'm more like a "vaguely reflective tin-foil star". :D

message 774: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) And, might I add, that you are doing well, you're just discouraged by reading one of the worlds longest books... Once you're done with that, you will fly through a ton of books on your list.

Elizabeth (Alaska) I admit to weakening earlier in the month, but purchased books for the Spring Challenge. Well, Ok, I bought 3 books and 2 of them will be for the Spring Challenge. But I have to admit I now have a wish list at Amazon. Again, all for the Challenge. I'm currently resisting, but I don't know for how long.

message 776: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I don't know if that would be a great idea, Fiona. I'd probably be cooked by now!

but if i commit i KNOW im going to break it!! i just brought 3 books on ebay!! Ima Bookaholic but i dont wanna do the 12 step program :( sorry lol

message 779: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (manchesterunited) OK Fiona...the guilt is getting to me. I counted up and apparently my problem is bigger than I thought. My wife and I have well over 600 books which we have not yet read. (No wonder I am always broke)! So now I recognize I have a problem. What is my next step? Insure them all...burn the place down? :/

message 780: by Alisha Marie (new)

Alisha Marie (endlesswonderofreading) | 715 comments I don't mind having a bit of a pile of unread books (I have about 120). My mom on the other hand hates that I have so many unread books. She doesn't understand that if I go to the thrift store and see a book I really like for one or two bucks, the chances of the book being there the next time I come back are slim to none. Then she points out that I could always not go to the thrift store and I'm like "Details don't matter". So, it's an endless argument.

Elizabeth (Alaska) My goal for the year is to read more than I buy. I am allowed to buy books, but I'm trying to keep it to a bare minimum. I broke down this morning and bought three books. BUT, they are for the Spring Challenge - they'll get read soon!

message 782: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Alisha, that sounds like my life. I remember seeing "The Road" at the thrift store for $1 and not getting it, and then having to buy it new because it never showed back up again. So after that, if I see something I want, I buy it. Lately, I've just not been going to the thrift store. I know the temptation is too much.

message 783: by Lisa Julianna (new)

Lisa Julianna (lisajulianna) | 1053 comments My addiction is worse than I thought. I been trying to categorize my books on an excel sheet. I still have one more book shelf to do that is upstairs and I have 3 to do downstairs. I am already up to 173 unread, owned books.
My husband said I can not buy anymore. :~(
I really had no idea that I had that many books...I figured around 200 but I'm almost to that many on just my shelves upstairs. LOL

message 784: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I just wanted to let everyone know that I heard from Ich. He is on day 37 and hasn't been tempted once. His work blocked the site as a "hobby site," so his access is pretty much limited to the library. But he's looking at internet cell phones right now. Anyway, that's the news for now.

Personally, I am doing quite well. I found the site PBSwap, which is helping me get rid of finished and duplicate books while getting new ones for free (or at least for the cost of shipping out old books). I got a 40% off coupon from Borders that I will be using this weekend.

message 785: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Oh good Lori, I love PBS! My account is on "vacation" as of right now, but I'll see if I can find you and add you to my friends on there. :)

And good going Ich, too!

message 786: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker Becky, I saw that you added me and I accepted.

Unfortunately with the weather being really bad, I am not going home. But I could probably send one of my parents to Borders with the coupon to get something for me.

message 787: by Rose (new)

Rose (roseo) PB Swap is my salvation!
What a clever idea. Out with the old, in with the new/used. :D

message 788: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) If you haven't read it, it's new! :)

Elizabeth (Alaska) That was what I couldn't understand about the woman who was upset we were reading stuff more than half a decade old. Heck, I haven't read all the stuff that's more than half a century old.

message 790: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Yeah... But hey, to each their own. *shrug* :)

Elizabeth (Alaska) By the way, I'm not doing so hot on the-i-must-not-buy-any-more-books crusade. Purchased 4 books this week.

message 792: by Becky (last edited Mar 27, 2009 11:00PM) (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Eh, it happens... I've managed to acquire 2 this week: One is a loaner from a friend who says "Just take it, even with your ban you'll read it before I will!" and the other was one that I had bought ages ago and then lost interest in after a couple pages, gave away and then had it re-gifted back to me, which I thought was funny. But maybe I will be more receptive to it this time. *shrug*

So, now I've got "The Other Boleyn Girl" and "The Virgin in the Garden" to add to the list.

Another chink in the Book-ban Armor. :\

We need to create a 12-step program and give everyone a sponsor.
When you are feeling desperate you phone your sponsor and they will gently convince you to put the book back on the shelf and then stare straight ahead, to avoid distractions, as you walk calmly but quickly out of the book shop.

Elizabeth (Alaska) Esther wrote: ". . . stare straight ahead, to avoid distractions, as you walk calmly but quickly out of the book shop..."

Three of my purchases were from Amazon. Safely and quietly in the comfort of my own home, I willfulling and intentionally did go online and select enough books so that shipping would be free.

message 797: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I'm about to splurge on Amazon--a CD, a movie, and probably a book.

For online purchases someone will have to create a gadget like Gmail's 'Mail Goggles' that forces you to answer 3 math problems before you purchase a book just to make sure you're sure :0)

message 799: by Becky (new)
