Riana | 397 comments Done with Cell (Henri's nomination)

I actually liked it even though I usually despise zombie books!

Riana | 397 comments Okay so I finished The Fellowship of the ring and I was am huge fan of the movies and was super excited about the books, but at the end the book was not for me. So I know one of the nomination rules was that only 1 book of a series can be nominated, but I also get that Lord of the Rings is in actual fact one book but I can't bear reading the next book knowing that I did not take the chance to ask if I can only read The fellowiship of the ring for this one to be over with?

It was originally ment as one book, but nowadays it is considered a trilogy and thus 3 books. So rest assured you have finished that nomination. :)
I know how you feel. The books were a major disappointment for me. It took me several years to finish the three books and I only did so, because I can't leave a series unfinished. I am a bit obsessive that way. I hardly ever not finish a book or series. I will always come back to it at some point in the future. For example I started Moby Dick and couldn't get through the damn book and put it aside. A decade later I tried again and this time only finished because I really wanted to and because I kept to a reading schedule.

P.s.: sorry for my late reply but I wasn't able to come online for a couple of days due to a busy personal schedule.

message 54: by Riana (new)

Riana | 397 comments The good news was worth the long wait! I usually feel the same about the series, this will be the second series in my entire life that I just can't finish. And I have been wanting to read these books forever and it is a major disappointment that I feel so disappointed haha. And it feels like a deal breaker, like if you don't like Lord of the Rings you have no appreciation for literature, so I am glad to hear of a fellow reader that was also disappointed!

As for Moby Dick, I know the feeling, I have been trying to finish a memoir of an Afrikaans author for 3 years now and I am not even halfway! However I am determined to finish it, even if it takes me 10years!

I refused to read LOTR for years. As a child, I was a major bookworm (some things never change) and my brother hardly read anything, except LOTR. At that point, I refused to read it simply because he had (I was young so it seemed a justifiable reason at the time!) I eventually read it before the movies came out. I enjoyed it but have not felt the desire to read it again!

I have however been reading Collapse by Jared Diamond for nearly 3 years now. I am not sure why it is taking me so long, as I am actually really enjoying it.

Glad I am not the only person who can take years to read a book and still not give up on it!

That's the spirit! I had that with Moby Dick, because of my mum. When I was younger she used to read a lot (nowadays she doesn't anymore because she can't hold a book or e-reader, because then her hands stiffen), but she only read romance novels. You know the kind that are published every week in a series by Harlequin or other companies. Not that there is something wrong with that, but imagine my surprise when she told me that one of her favorite books is Moby Dick. So when I heard that I wanted to read the book, but I just hated it and so I gave it another chance ten years later and it wasn't much better. It is one of the few books if not the only book I gave 1 star. And it does feel like I am missing something because it is considered a classic. But then again even classics are subject to tastes.

Same here Varla, I eventually did read LOTR (and enjoy it) Also around the time the movies came out but I used to mock my brother for his "elf" books all the time. But I must admit I still don't like fantasy and the merest mention of an orc or an elf on the back cover of a book has me running a mile!

So sorry to arrive late and then ask stupid questions but how does this work again?
Do we have to read one book off each persons list?
Even the people with bad taste :) or just choose 9 books at random?

message 59: by Riana (new)

Riana | 397 comments You have to choose 1 book of each persons list, even the people with bad taste haha.
Just note that you can only choose from the reserve books if you have read all of the 5 original nominations.

The irony is that I adore fantasy!

I also love fantasy, so this was suppose to be the ultimate for me! Oh well, luckily there are 1000s of other great fantasies out there!

Lauren (Sugar & Snark) | 1262 comments Mod
Great thanks. I might have to go into the reserves for one or 2 but I think I'm ok. That also explains my choice of books for my own list. I think I wanted to diversify the reading pool :)

A couple of us are going to read Cry to Heaven from your nominations in two weeks time. We would love your input. So please drop by in our discussion when we are reading it.

Lol, this from someone who almost only reads romance novels :)

By the way, don't you read lots of fantasy anyway? Not the epic sword and sorcery stuff, but novels with vampires, werewolves, angels, immortals, etc.?

Riana | 397 comments Instead of reading Cry to Heaven I read The Green Mile. I actually did not notice that it was nominated the first time around and I have been meaning to read it for so long!

Was creepy that Micheal Clark Duncan died the same day I finished the book! I haven't seen the movie yet, but I will definately still watch it.

And now I can finally say... I completed the Deserted Island Challenge!

Emma (emmauk007) | 1081 comments Read Rianas The lion the witch and the wardrobe, an easy read. :-)

Well done! And I must say that reading The Green Mile instead of Cry to Heaven was an excellent choice!

I totally agree with that statement. I have read and seen the movie The Green Mile and they are great.
Congratulations, Riana, on completing the Deserted Island challenge first! I hope you had fun and will be back next year for the next instalment, which will be sligthly different! :)

message 73: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith By the way Barbara, when does this challenge end?
I'm already wondering what next year's theme will be. I've enjoyed the group reads this challenge has inspired.

You could have read the first post in which it says that it will end on 31 January, but I am happy to be of assistence by telling you. :D

I will open up nominations for the next challenge on 1 January and it will be either the best books we read this year (2012) or the best series we have read. I like the best books of the year best and this would also be something we could repeat every year, but I have to check if that is doable by seeing what everybody has read this year. Just to see there is enough variation and that people haven't read the same books. :)

I too have loved the discussions. A lot of people have read the same books and it is interesting to see what everyone thinks of the nominations of the other people.

message 75: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Sorry *looks sheepish*. I was thinking of checking, and then... Ok I was lazy.

Ooh, I hope it's the best of 2012! But we could have a poll to decide. There might be some overlap, but if it's the same as this year then you can't nominate the same books anyway.

message 76: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
huh?
The new one will begin after this one has finished. In theory the same books can be nominated if they were read this year. But they might be nominated by different people.

message 77: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith I meant that if the rules of the challenge are the same, then two people can't nominate the same book as one of their best reads. So even if some people have the same favourites, the can't have the same lists.

message 78: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
Ok, yeah that rule will still apply. Just so we get as many different nominations (recommendations) as possible.

Finished The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe - Riana's nomination.

message 80: by Emma (new)

Emma (emmauk007) | 1081 comments The Green mile is one of my favourite books, so much better than the film although the film was excellent. Shame to hear the actor who played the black man accused of the murder and rape of the 2 little girls died last week.

There is so much variation on this bookclub that I doubt that if we choose books from our reading lists that they will overlap. In January we go back to our reading lists and choose 5 0r 6 books that we enjoyed reading the most.

message 81: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith I finished one of Lauren F's choices - Cry to Heaven by Anne Rice.

Emma (emmauk007) | 1081 comments Read The Hitchiker's Guide - Laurens choice. Im going to leave Memoirs of Cleopatra for awhile now, as Ive had a bad run of books lately and want to read something I enjoy. Ill come back to it at a later stage, its the last book anyway that I have to read for the challenge.

message 84: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith I can't believe you didn't like The Night Circus...

Emma (emmauk007) | 1081 comments Lauren wrote: "I can't believe you didn't like The Night Circus..."

lol I wanted to like it Lauren, but never really got into it. I found it a bit boring. There are also times Im sure you'll agree when youre just not interested in reading that particular book, but maybe at another time you might enjoy it, with a challenge I found myself slogging through it, thats one of the reasons why I decided to read Cleopatra a little later, just give myself a break. To each his own :-)

message 86: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith I just thought that The Night Circus was the kind of book that's very easy to like (for women at least), and out of the books you chose for this challenge it seemed the one you'd be most likely to enjoy, so I was just surprised :) It's really hard to predict what kinds of books you'd like though.
