Tim Weakley | 396 comments It's been suggested that we try a group read, and that sounded like fun to me. What does everyone think?

Any possible books?

This is a great idea, Tim. We tried a couple of books last fall and I think what I learned from that was pick something accessible. Wuthering Heights was a total flop; The Great Gatsby was a moderate success.

Once a book is selected, you may want to choose a start date and assign certain chapters to weeks. Over a month should be good, but it's your call.

You could use the poll function (I think) to solicit opinions on books to select.

If you are not able to send message to all group members inviting them to join, I think I can do that as a an Administrator. let me know if you want me to use this.

BTW, Books on my TBR right now are:
- A Game of Thrones
- The Sisters Brothers
- Oryx and Crake
Just give me an excuse to buy rather than wait for a library copy, please :) But you certainly don't have to select from these! Cheers.

Tim Weakley | 396 comments I have The Sisters Brothers and Oryx and Crake on my tbr shelf as well. They would work.

Great! Where do you want to go from here? Solicit other titles? Poll the group for their input? At least we know we'll have a group of 2 at the minimum.

message 5: by Tim (new)

Tim Weakley | 396 comments I think we should poll the group. If anyone offers up other titles then we can add them in. I see The Sister Brothers won another award in the last few days.

message 6: by Kristin (new)

Kristin | 221 comments I'm in (or will try my hardest to keep up, sometimes life just gets in the way...). I also have The Sisters Brothers on my TBR list. I'd be up for Oryx and Crake, too. One of my goals is to read Margaret Atwood this year.

Sounds good. Tim, do you want to try to set up a poll? If only an Admin can do it, please let me know. Cheers.

message 8: by Tim (new)

Tim Weakley | 396 comments Looks like it's over my pay grade! ;) You'll have to give it a go.

Okay, to answer the poll go here:

http://www.goodreads.com/poll/list/20...

I've voted for The Sisters Brothers, but I also added The Paris Wife and The Catcher in the Rye as they are also on our mutual official TBR lists, Tim.

I sent a message to all group members inviting them to the poll. i've never used this option before. Lemme know when you get it. Cheers.

message 11: by Paula (new)

Paula (paulay) | 200 comments got it and its a good idea. i like catcher in the rye or the paris wife. i never read catcher, so i'm leaning towards that one

message 12: by Tim (new)

Tim Weakley | 396 comments They all look good. A friend just read Paris Wife and liked it.

Dang, Tim. Too bad. I guess we'll see what the winner is. We can always have 2.

The Sisters Brothers is losing, but it's my #1 pick.

Great to have you on board, Paula.

EDIT: Duh, misread your earlier post, Tim. I thought you read The Paris Wife.

Mekerei | 204 comments Thanks Faye, loved your choices and have voted.

I would love to do this as well.. Voted for The Sisters Brothers

message 16: by Tim (new)

Tim Weakley | 396 comments Looks like The Paris Wife is ahead by a lap. Shall we call it at the end of today?

message 17: by Sofia (new)

Sofia (fivesunflowers) | 40 comments Great idea - I'm open to whatever the group picks! :)

This is very exciting. By the number of votes, there seems to be a lot if interest.

I think we could run 2 group reads, that way there is more choice. Clearly, The Paris Wife will be one of them.

I would like to solicit volunteers for moderating the 2 threads. If you would be willing to:

- determine the timeline for how much of the book should be read each week over a 4 week period
-commit to asking at least one question of the group once per week to stimulate conversation, and
- voice your opinions about the book in the thread,

please let me know in this post. You may also add you own flair to the group in ways I am not creative enough to consider, as long as it keeps it fun and inclusive. Please also let me know for which titles you would consider taking on this role.

Yeah. I think this will be a lot of fun!

message 19: by Tim (new)

Tim Weakley | 396 comments I can Mod one of them if we do end up reading two. I think May will be a maxed reading month!

Faye | 673 comments Mod
That's great, Tim. Are you interested in modding for any one of the books?

message 21: by Tim (last edited Apr 30, 2012 02:48PM) (new)

Tim Weakley | 396 comments I actually own The Sisters Brothers. The Paris Wife I will have to go out and buy so that will delay me a few days. Is that one currently #2?

edit: Since Catcher is number 2 I can mod that one.

message 22: by Tim (new)

Tim Weakley | 396 comments Okay...here are your Leaders:

The Paris Wife
With splits 44 votes

The Catcher in the Rye
With splits 33 votes

That looks like our top two by far

I'll totally get in on The Paris Wife. Do we know when we will start these yet?

message 24: by Tim (new)

Tim Weakley | 396 comments I think the hope is to run it from 1st May until 31 May.

Mariss-dono, are you interested in moderating The Paris Wife group?

I think we'll have to give people a week to get the book as I know some people will buy online.

Sure Why not. So what all do I have to do, besides the things previously mentioned in post #18?

Faye | 673 comments Mod
Great! Thank you Mariss-dono and Tim.

if you could please each open a new thread in the general folder with the name of your book as the title. You can see the starting thread for the To Kill A Mockingbird group read here http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/6...

Basically a general invite and the chapters you expect to progress though each week and your starting date. You will probably want to give people a few days - a week to get their hands on a copy of the book.

Once you have both got your threads started, I will send an official announcement to all group members about the group reads and set them as books the group is reading now.

Thank you both for agreeing to moderate, it should be a lot of fun!
