S&L Video - #02 - The Magicians Wrap-Up and Interview with Saladin Ahmed!
This episode felt much smoother and more relaxed then the first, congratulations. Yay for group member reviews of books!
Much better than the first episode. More relaxed and fun :)
Extended interview with Saladin coming by chance?
Extended interview with Saladin coming by chance?
Hey you two, that was awesome! I loved the interview withSaladin Ahmed and how the conversation was leaning towards the writing end of things. The dialogue surrounding The Magicians was fantastic, relaxed, and insightful. The show flowed quite nicely. Seriously, great job! Thanks for making my Friday better
Out of curiosity, will there be a wrap-up episode of the podcast for "The Magicians" as well for those of us who aren't watching the show? I know there was some pre-wrap up discussion for "The Magicians" and, having just finished it, I was looking forward to the next podcast where the proper wrap-up with spoilers would be happening. Please let me know if my expectations were set incorrectly and if they should be reset.
Thanks and I look forward to the next podcast which, I'm hoping based on the first comment of this thread, will have an interview with Lev Grossman.

I think we're probably done talking about The Magicians overall.

Yes, next Thursday!

Yes, next Thursday!
Sweet.
Thanks for asking my question, btw. I've read NK Jemisin already(thanks to S&L) but I'll definitely give the others he mentioned a shot.

ALthough I suppose the audio deserves a proper wrap-up, I'm not sure what else to say that we didn't say ont he last audio episode, except spoilers.... V and I will talk.

"Charles from the Philippines." I guess that's him (blogger for Sfsignal).
Great episode, I think sitting at the bar was a great idea; no offense to the dragon. Oh and I wish I could fit that much junk into my man cave! Not that it was junk... I'm just saying... I need a bigger man cave *cough*, anywho.
I love the author interviews!!! It makes the books even more fun to get background from the authors themselves after reading the books!
Great episode guys! Thanks to you two, its going to take forever for me to finish my reading of the "Malazan" series as I get caught up in the monthly picks and check out the new books coming out this month as well. My ebook reader is starting to get crowded with "books to read" just from your two youtube shows.
Boots wrote: "Oh and I wish I could fit that much junk into my man cave!"C'mon, now. Who's got this one?
Another great episode and I agree with everyone that said you guys looked more at ease. I personally enjoy the small jabs and jokes between you two in the audio version, so it's great to see them appear here, as you get more relaxed doing the show. The technical points from the first episode were solved, the interview was interesting and the discussion of the Magicians, really made me want to read the book.
And my nickname does mean procrastinator, so top marks for Tom on that and top marks for Veronica's pronunciation, even though I'm Portuguese and not Spanish, it sounds almost the same eheh Now you guys just have to taste some Portuguese wine, which is among the best in the world :P
Thanks for reading my topic and to everyone who replied, cause there were lots of interesting information and opinions.

Oh! I didn't put that together. Darb it. I would have given them a plug.
EDIT Darb? .... I kinda like that typo. Darb it!

What, you're not going to jump on it?

I might start, just to see where that rabbit hole leads.
Excellent review of "The Magicians" by Lev Grossman. Summed up my love/hate (maybe a bit strong, more like love/frustration) with the main character and how much the other characters seem to be, eventually compromising and accepting. Book 2, "The Magician King" is certainly recommend for anyone liking "The Magicians", the characters continue to evolve within their struggles with good building.
Great job on the video! All the minor glitches from the first video were fixed, and the whole thing felt more relaxed and comfortable. Loved seeing the book mentioned last time on the shelf this time (plus Mehrune's Razor in the background). The set felt a little more "lived in" this time, and the chat at the bar was great.I'm already looking forward to the next one.

Thanks for the video!

Which, I think, is what the video watchers is looking for (not everyone listens/watches both your shows).
Loving the show! So glad to have found you through Geek & Sundry.Regarding The Magicians . . .
Veronica is right, at the end of the story, Q is still a D-bag. I also, would rather have the story from Alice's perspective. I felt she had more substance as a character.
For the record, I did not like the book and it was NOT because I wanted a happy ending. Half way through the book I thought the only thing that would save the book would be for a great tragic end to Quentin. I just felt that any action to the book was anti-climactic and I did not care about the characters. I hang with goth/emo people in real life that have better personalities.
It is a shame, I was a huge Narnia fan growing up and I wanted to like this book. Oh well, if every book that we read was great, then we would have no reason to appreciate those that are truly wonderful.
Looking forward to the next book!
Tom, loved that you picked my 'This day in alternate history' "research". I feel like I could write a million of those things, if enough stuff happened on the days. This show is just great, the best part of geek & sundry.
A small suggestion, it would be nice to include a link in the youtube show to skip the review of the book your are discussing. I had to search manually for the calendar where the review ends. I didn't read the book yet, because of time constraints, so I didn't want to hear any spoilers. Besides this minor annoyance, it is a great show! It renews my interest to start reading furiously again. Only to find the time to do so.
V & T, that was amazing evolution from the first episode. That definitely captured the best things of the podcast. Much more relaxed and the editing choices were spot on. Great work, Loved it!

We actually asked to have this put into the show as an annotation, but I guess they didn't have time to do it.

Thanks Nate and thanks for the alternate history research. I know how hard it is to find reliable sources on universes that don't exist.

Great second episode! Like many others have already said, T & V looked much more relaxed and it just seemed like two friends having a conversation. I like that style of show. Keep up the good work.

I agree Alice's perspective would have been better. Unfortunately the book would have had a somewhat abrupt ending. Unless niffins can write...
I just discovered the show and the two hosts seem fun but ngl I cringed a little when Tom said he was basically Quentin in his 20's.

Yeah don't time travel and meet me. Annoying.

Thanks for reading my question to Saladin. Really enjoying the YouTube show. A little more format (and probably less wine), but you guys still do a great job.The Lev Grossman interview should be interesting considering how split the viewership was on his book. I must fit that fine line in the middle. I didn't hate the book but I had mixed feelings to be sure. I can totally understand why so many didn't like Q. He was almost too realistic. Some people just can't be happy no matter how cool their life is.
Keep up the great work guys.
Hi! I really enjoyed this weeks episode. Thanks for bringing attention to Throne of the Crescent Moon. It's not a book I've heard of before, and it sounded so interesting! I will have to give it a try now.
nice espisode...i liked the conversational way the content comes out....sitting at the bar talking is a great touch to make it seem every day talking...really liked V framed with just the one lit candle...the set was appropriately nice but in the background...like the shots of the Goodreads forums
Fun episode, with a much better flow, IMHO. I was happy to see that you'd brought Saladin Ahmed on, as he's a cool guy, and Throne of the Crescent Moon is a delightful ride. If you like the 1001 Nights and/or old pulp sword & sorcery, definitely give it a try.
Very nicely done. I think you acknowledged the division sparked by Magicians very well. Veronica, the philosophizing is an occupational hazard, as an academic specializing in spec. fic. Just slap me when I get too long-winded. Whether people liked the book or not, I think it's awesome that you picked one which provoked such heartfelt discussion. Looking forward to even more division on Hyperion.
One of my favorite parts of the show is seeing the authors (I suspect through Skype)for the first time. It expands my appreciation for them and gives me the motivation to read their books.
Loving the show, only just found you guys but can't wait to getting starting on some of the books mentioned in the show. Already started on Hyperion :-)

My two cents: In general, I'd like the book wrap ups to be done on the podcast, not on the show. Even if there's not a full, spoiler-y wrap up of The Magicians on the podcast, I hope future book wrap ups would be on the podcast.
