Best dystopian book you've read?
Divergent is way at the top but I also loved The Maze Runner, Hunger Games of course, Partials, and One Second After. That's just off the top of head. I have a lot more to read. Yaaaay!
I just finished Eden which I thought was really good! I also liked Eve and Partials. Helper12 and Pure were pretty good too.

we're like twins :D
we're like twins :D
I just ordered divergent & enclave. Also Just started reading the kindle version of Scourge. So far it is pretty good!
My all time favorites so far... probably Divergent and Enclave. But I also really loved The Hunger Games series, The Forest of Hands and Teeth series, The Maze Runner series, Legend, Matched & Crossed, Partials, and Birthmarked.
Yeah, I loved Legend too, add that to my list! Suzy, was Partials really really good, or just sorta good? It was one of the next ones I was considering reading, but I'm trying to decide whether to read the other two Maze Runner books first. Thanks!!
I loved Partials. I'm so easy to please when it comes to dystopians though. I don't think I've ever read one I didn't like. You can't go wrong with either choice. I forgot to mention Genesis. That one was pretty cool too.

Cool, I'm pretty much the same way: love dystopians and pretty easy to please :) I'll check out Genesis as well!
Gotta be Uglies/Pretties/Specials for me. Westerfeld's worldbuilding is explained so well and not obtrusive. Although I love the rest too. Still trying to get my hands on Divergent.
I'd say The Handmaid's Tale, Oryx and Crake, The Year of the Flood (yes, I'm a Margaret Atwood's fan) and 1984.

I really enjoyed Divergent, Legend, The Road, Enclave, Unwind, and the Hunger Games. I am currently reading Partials which came highly recommended by my wife.
I read the first chapter of Partials and thought concept was cool but wasn't sure whether to buy it. Let me know what you think mate, sounds like it probably gets better
I agree that it is difficult to choose my favorite as one. So I put the three most recent ones that I absolutely loved and found facinating. The Immortal Rules
Gone
Enclave

THE GIVER

THE LONG WALK

THE MAZE RUNNER series
Probably because most of the recent dystopian -themed novels are basically based on them. I can't help but feel like the new ones lack originality. However, despite that... I liked Hunger Games (book I only, Catching fire and Mockingjay not so much), City of Ember was also good... I guess Divergent was also nice. I also liked Starters... I'm still deciding whether or not I like Uglies and Delirium.
I so need to read Divergent! And I think I'm the only person on the planet that never read the Giver. I think my favorite dystopian that I ever read was Cormac McCarthy's The Road. Awesome! He got a pulitzer for it and if you've read it, you understand why. :D I highly recommend it!
I just read
which was great. And now I am reading
which is quite good so far. Much different emotional place from Alas, Babylon.

the wool series, maze runner series, divergent series, giver series (the final book in the series is coming out soon by the way!!), the unit... ahhhh there's just too many to choose only one favorite! lol

i just finished the whole ember series and i really enjoyed it. i like that they didn't focus so much on the romance and stuck with a really good story. and it felt realistic, like something that just might be possible. i reeeeeally like the delerium series too. the final one doesn't come out until next year!

You know of course that The Long Walk by Richard Bachman was really Stephen King, right? I'm sure everyone knows that

I loved The Immortal Rules!!! Also loved Divergent! I wrote down two on my list to check...The Giver (never heard of it?) and The HandMaid's Tale :)
Hey, The Hunger Games is $1.99 for Kindle on Amazon right now, which I got, even though I read it long ago. I want it on my Kindle. I had got it from the library so can't just read it when I want to.
'Best' often varies with my current mood & reading. Fahrenheit 451 is blowing me away right now. In 1953, Bradbury was talking about dumbing down the news to fit our shortened attention spans & even had a biometric lock on the front door. Awesome.
I don't know is Ashes is considered one but for me Ashes is the best so far. I definitely can't wait for the next book in the series.

Well i would totally hide books, but the ones I would do no idea.lol
Katrina wrote: "I don't know is Ashes is considered one but for me Ashes is the best so far. I definitely can't wait for the next book in the series."Which Ashes, Katrina? I loved Ashes by Ilsa J. Bick. Shadows, the 2nd book, is out next month!
Hi! I don't want to barge in on this discussion, but a practically unknown dystpian sci-fi is "The Artemis Effect" - because it was only published two days ago! I would love to know what people think of it if they can spare the time to give it a go. :)
On the way home I was listening to the second section of Fahrenheit 451 & one of the characters says that one of the best things about books is that you can shut them when you need to think, unlike the TV & advertising of the book's world.
I got home & read some of Education of a Wandering Man. The epigraph to one of the chapters I read was "A book is a friend that will do what no friend does - be silent when we wish to think." - Will Durant, the author of Story of Civilization
Kind of neat getting the same sentiment from two such different sources within an hour of each other.

I was hoping to be the first to lost The Road, but at the same time cannot believe it has only been mentioned once. the story was absolutely amazing. as a father of two living children, a sin and a daughter, and having lost another son shortly before birth; the connection between the father and son during their journey can still make me emotional.

Yeah! I loved the Ember series. It was a plausible future and didn't stray too much from the plot.

I can't say Delirium is one of my dystopian favorites. It's good, but not enough for me. It's more of a love story, really. But it was a nice read.

Lol!! They are such good books :)
I like The Hunger Games because it's power to overwhelm someone with information and be able to change peoples minds into doing something about our government because maybe someday our world will be desperate enough to go to extreme measures like they did in this book. You fall in love with the characters and feel like you are actually in Katniss's mind and you experience everything she feels along the way of this truly tragic and inspiring story. All the while you are hit with the pain she feels in this broken beyond repair world, in the beginning you see Katniss giving up on anything ever changing in the world because that's the way things are and that's where she happens to live. But in the ending you read her longing for a better world and the hope she so desperately clings on to, because that's the only thing she happens to have left. This book, is amazing.
