Jason (ancatdubh2) | 912 comments Is anybody reading anything interesting besides the book/books chosen for wine club? This might be a good thread to talk about non-book-club books.

Right now I'm reading a biography of Eleni Gatzoyiannis, a Greek mother of five who was executed by Communist guerrillas during the Greek Civil War. What's fascinating about this biography is that it's written by her son who just happens to live in Grafton, MA (two towns away from me). He was a writer for the New York Times and left the paper to go back to Greece and find out what happened to his mother and why. Pretty heavy stuff, but excellently written.

Brigid | 43 comments I read a new Eric Carle today. Oh the joys of being a kindergarten teacher.

Jason (ancatdubh2) | 912 comments Ah, nice. My kindergartener pooh-pooh's Eric Carle. The pretentious little shit now prefers Syd Hoff.

message 5: by Sue, Sangría (new)

Sue | 94 comments Ok. Now that I read the whole series, I'll mention that I read 50 Shades of Grey, Darker & Freed. I must say I really enjoyed them all! There were definitely too many details of every sexual encounter but it got better in the 2nd and 3rd book. I always enjoy a book with characters that have dysfunctional lives and boy, this one was different! It was a bit of a love/sexual desire story somewhat similar to Twilight so I can see how alot of people would be turned off. I highly recommend reading it JUST so you know what kinky *%#^ery is really about...........:-)

Jason (ancatdubh2) | 912 comments How much did you blush while reading it?

message 7: by Jason, Cabernet Sauvignon (new)

Jason (ancatdubh2) | 912 comments I read The History of Love this weekend and thought it was great—I recommend!

message 8: by Allisen (new)

Allisen Lemay | 62 comments im reading the 50 shades series, and then history of love... conflicting opinions on love, im sure! im not blushing, im rolling my eyes... the writing is terrible, but the characters are too fucked up to not keep reading about. but i digress, i will soon be over the trendy addictive books ive been tending toward lately. i need substance! haha

message 9: by Jason, Cabernet Sauvignon (new)

Jason (ancatdubh2) | 912 comments I'm reading Friday Night Lights and it is awwwesommme...

message 10: by Sue, Sangría (new)

Sue | 94 comments Jason, thanks for recommending Crooked Letter...50% thru and really good!

message 11: by mussolet (new)

mussolet (sovotchka) | 18 comments I read A Vineyard in Tuscany: A Wine Lover's Dream, and it was really entertaining. The author has a funny, but very real way of describing the life around him, and Italian people are fun to read about :).

message 12: by Jason, Cabernet Sauvignon (last edited Jun 20, 2012 08:19AM) (new)

Jason (ancatdubh2) | 912 comments Allisen, are you saying in The History of Love the writing is terrible? Or in Fifty Shades of Grey? I'm going to have to assume the latter, unless you correct me. I thought it was a very good book (The History of Love), and I'd like to hear what you think of it when you're finished.

Sue, no problem on the recommendation, although it was based on other people's recommendations because I haven't actually read it yet! But I will soon. Speaking of which, how were you able to "like" my review for it when I haven't even written one yet? You are tricky. Although no complaints from me, as I do appreciate "likes" on my reviews.

SilverRD, that book seems perfectly appropriate for this group!

Allisen Lemay | 62 comments yes, was talking about 50 shades, terrible writing indeed. but entertaining, none the less. reading history of love now, about 40 pages in, mrs dalloway fell by the wayside of christian grey in june, so will try and fit her in before the book theif. and to think i used to read for fun, now its like a job... oh, and i dont pick for another 6 months or so in my non-virtual book club, so dont know if it will be devil in the white city or not. i would still like to squeeze in mockingbird this summer. im gonna need to go on vacation to get all this reading done!!

message 15: by Jason, Cabernet Sauvignon (new)

Jason (ancatdubh2) | 912 comments You are the only person I know who makes an enjoyable pastime sound like a burdensome chore. And yes, I do think you should try to squeeze in To Kill a Mockingbird—probably my favorite novel of all time!

message 16: by Allisen (new)

Allisen Lemay | 62 comments i feel like this is homework! i might have to quit virtual book club...hahaha

Katherine | 96 comments Allisen wrote: "i feel like this is homework! i might have to quit virtual book club...hahaha"

Hey Allisen,is it fast reading? Life is too short for bad wine & terrible writing I think LOLOLLL

message 18: by Allisen (new)

Allisen Lemay | 62 comments the history of love is fast reading, and i like this one, picked ir for my real life book club. should be done it by the end of the weekend and then will try and squeeze mrs dalloway in next week to be back on track! im a really good complainer, im not sure if that is coming through on here or not?! haha :)

message 19: by Jason, Cabernet Sauvignon (new)

Jason (ancatdubh2) | 912 comments Allisen, tell me what you think of my review for The History of Love when you're done reading it. I really super liked it, way more than I thought I would.

message 20: by Allisen (new)

Allisen Lemay | 62 comments you want me to find time to read books and THEN read reports about said book? now you have gone too far! :)

message 21: by Katherine (new)

Katherine | 96 comments Allisen complain all you like Mrs its good for the soul :) & its Fridayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy thanks be to god,I though it would never arrive !!!!!!

message 22: by Jason, Cabernet Sauvignon (new)

Jason (ancatdubh2) | 912 comments If anyone's looking for something a little more "under-the-radar," I'm reading right now Seven Types of Ambiguity and it is superbly written. It is long, but it feels like a good thing. The story is thoroughly told!

message 23: by Kate (new)

Kate LaClair | 15 comments Just finished When She Woke by Hillary Jordan, an interesting futuristic, dystopic version of The Scarlet Letter. It's a bit unbalanced (in writing style, etc.) but a fast and an interesting read. I would recommend The Handmaid's Tale over it any day though.

message 24: by Jason, Cabernet Sauvignon (new)

Jason (ancatdubh2) | 912 comments I would love to read that for Wine Club, hint hint.

message 25: by Allisen (new)

Allisen Lemay | 62 comments Chris wrote: "I'd happily read it again, even tho' I've read it a couple of times before."

Chris! How do you have time to read so many books more than once? Are you an English teacher, like Kate? This is the only logical explanation for me!

message 26: by Jason, Cabernet Sauvignon (new)

Jason (ancatdubh2) | 912 comments ...only 31 years and 19 days left until my retirement.
(not that I'm counting.)

message 27: by Jason, Cabernet Sauvignon (new)

Jason (ancatdubh2) | 912 comments Wow. So by the way, Cloud Atlas? Is good.

message 28: by Jason, Cabernet Sauvignon (new)

Jason (ancatdubh2) | 912 comments I'm at 35%. I find the structure fascinating. Mitchell's ability to switch writing style like that is amazing to me.

message 29: by Jason, Cabernet Sauvignon (new)

Jason (ancatdubh2) | 912 comments I still don't really know...obviously Sixsmith is a character in two of the chapters, but then Luisa becomes a fictional character in a subsequent chapter? I need to read more to solidify any kind of theory on what is happening here...

message 30: by Jason, Cabernet Sauvignon (new)

Jason (ancatdubh2) | 912 comments Chris, are you done with Cloud Atlas?
Here is my review: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

message 31: by Jason, Cabernet Sauvignon (new)

Jason (ancatdubh2) | 912 comments I'm reading Moby-Dick right now and I'm really impressed by how readable it is. I thought it was going to be difficult or boring, but it is neither! If anyone is interested in joining the group read for this, it is here: http://www.goodreads.com/group/show/7...

message 32: by Keryn (new)

Keryn (khouse) | 110 comments Just read The Mosquito Coast by Paul Theroux - amazing read; in my mind I kept comparing it to Lord of the Flies and Things Fall Apart (chaos theory), though its certainly unique. Cloud Atlas and Moby Dick are going to be in my to-read list now that I see your comments.

message 33: by Jason, Cabernet Sauvignon (new)

Jason (ancatdubh2) | 912 comments Two books I've read very recently that I think are really, really superb and amazing and whatever other qualitative adjectives you can come up with are:

The Book of Ebenezer Le Page by G. B. Edwards
and Woodcutters by Thomas Bernhard.
